The English Electric Lightning (Images of War) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 62 ratings

A photo-packed history of this Cold War-era supersonic fighter aircraft.

The early 1950s were a boom time for British aviation. The lessons of six years of war had been learned, and much of the research into jet engines, radar, and aerodynamics had begun to reach fruition. In Britain, jet engine technology led the world while wartime developments into swept-wing design in Germany and their transonic research program were used to give western design teams a quantum leap in aircraft technology.

The English Electric Lightning emerged at this time. This supersonic fighter aircraft of the Cold War era is perhaps best remembered for its amazing takeoff performance, its exceptional rate of climb, and its immense speed. Here, Martin Bowman takes us on a photographic journey, illustrating the various landmarks of the Lightning's impressive operational history.

A small format color photo guide to the Lightning. It had the information and photos I sought. I believe that to do the subject justice it could have been much larger.

Good overview of the lightning. I like the pilots point of view. Very informative.

Pictures and layout could be better. Feels kind of cheaply produced. There are better books out there for quality and content esp Tim Mclellands book.

This book is not a conventional review of a well known military aircraft with masses of details of every operational history of machines in service. It is much more a pictorial review of the development phases and the highlights of the aircraft's service in the RAF. In fact the pictures take up more space than the text. However they are truly exceptional and the author has to be congratulated on the number and quality.
