Fire Sail (The Xanth Novels Book 42) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 395 ratings

The New York Times–bestselling series continues with this pun-tastic epic quest and far-flung fantasy adventure.

Lydell, a shy, naive man of twenty-one, and world-weary grandmother Grania could not be more different. But when their paths cross on the way to beseech the Good Magician to add some excitement to their extraordinarily dull lives, the one thing they have in common is about to get them more than they bargained for . . .

Lydell and Grania’s exceptional integrity makes them valuable to the Good Magician. He promises to fulfill their hearts’ desires on the condition they pilot a fireboat to its new proprietors, whoever—and wherever—they may be.

Along with an obnoxious bird and a robot dogfish as shipmates, they unfurl their sail of flame and cruise through the skies of Xanth, guided by cryptic clues. Picking up a crew of future children along the way, Lydell and Grania must plan a royal wedding, detonate an F-Bomb, evade illusion dragons, rescue Jack and Jill, find a princess for a werewolf prince, and face their greatest fears—all while remaining true to their compulsively honest selves.

Fire Sail
is the 42nd book in the Xanth series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

An Entertaining Fantasy Adventure
4 out of 5 stars
An Entertaining Fantasy Adventure
This is the 42nd book in the Xanth series and it follows the familiar formula that fans of this pun filled fantasy realm have come to know and love. The novel recounts the adventure of Lydell and Grania, who go by Dell and Nia respectively. Dell is old and Nia is young, but the two are similar in that they are mutually cursed with a case of compulsive honesty. After visiting the Good Magician Humfrey they are tasked with sailing a fire boat on a quest that will take them all across fantastical Xanth.I recently revisited some of Anthony's earlier work with my children and found the experience quite interesting. He's often accused of having old fashioned ideas, but I've always felt that there is an underlying kindness in his stories. I believe the pairing of a young male and an older female protagonist in 'Fire Sail' is a response to some of the criticisms that have been leveled against him, and it signals that the the criticisms have been heard. You can ask no more of an individual than to evolve with the times. The depressing thing about criticism is that people will always be able to find cause for it whether it's warranted or not. For example, in the early chapters of 'Fire Sail' Nia lectures Dell on the importance of loving others for their personality and not their appearance. I believe these chapters contain a good message that is of great social benefit. However, it's possible critics of Anthony could accuse him of suggesting that beautiful people are unintelligent or superficial. The point is that if people want to find something to criticize, they will do so. For my part, I believe this story is a sincere effort to convey a noble theme. Sometimes, however, Anthony does seem to engage in a little mischief. If this is your first Xanth novel, you will undoubtedly be delighted by one of the most wonderful and joyous realms in all of fantasy. I recently read the original Oz books by Baum, and I feel Anthony's work is a continuation of that kind of fun filled fantasy tradition. In Xanth, every character has a magic talent, pants grow on trees, and mythical creatures are abundant to cause problems at every turn. Coming back to Xanth is like coming back home. If you're new to Xanth, this book contains the strong friendships, romance, and life advice that is sure to make you happy.

As usual, Piers has given us a candid look into Xanth, but this time without it being all about the Royals. They play background and side parts but the stars in this novel are very ordinary Xanthians, or are they. I will give nothing away except that is a very good read.

There were slow parts i could have done without but others that seemed disconnected and then became meaningful later on. Well written and fun read overall

Piers Anthony is my all time favorite author. I am so happy to finally have more Xanth books after not for the last few years. I have read Xanth for over 25 years every book is unique and tons of fun to read and Fire Sail is no different Lydell was a fun character for his cluelessness nut Nia was the star of the book. She kept everyone grounded and on task while genuinely being a kind and caring person.

This is a fairly simple linear plot. Less twists in the narrative compared to earlier works. It is possible to work out where things are going very early on. Not particularly complex characters.

I have been reading this series since my dad passed them to me as a child. I' excited to finish the latest novel. Only disappointment is that the new formats don't match the first 35ish books. So far the story is strong and involvin the 5 children from the future again.
