The Company of Cats Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 158 ratings

A millionaire’s cat may be the key to a murder mystery in this delightful novel from an Agatha Award–winning author.

When Annabel Hinchby-Smythe accepts an offer to serve as interior decorator to computer mogul Arthur Arbuthnot, she can’t help noticing that no one in the house seems to genuinely like the tycoon—aside from his cat, Sally.

After Arthur’s sudden death—and the revelation that Sally is named sole inheritor in his will—Annabel’s new task will be finding out the truth about her client’s demise, and keeping the furry heiress safe from harm.

“Her portrayal of the kindhearted, martini-swigging Annabel is a winner.” —

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Annabel Hinchly-Smythe, who makes a living selling hot items to gossip columns, is worrying about money during a particularly dry social season when a chance encounter with wealthy computer magnate Arthur Arbuthnot leads to the promise of a lucrative job. Arbuthnot, mistaking Annabel's profession, wants her to redecorate his dreary flat, and Annabel, though more accustomed to collecting tidbits of scandal than swatches of fabric, decides to give it a go. Meeting the ghastly assortment of staff and family surrounding Arbuthnot, Annabel observes that only the tycoon's cat, Sally, seems genuinely fond of him. When Arbuthnot meets an apparently accidental death, it looks as if Annabel will have to go back to the columns. But then the tycoon's officious secretary attempts to lure Sally to her death, and Annabel sneaks the feline safely off the premises and is drawn into dastardly doings. After Arbuthnot's will truly puts the pigeon among the cats?by naming Sally as his chief heir?Annabel must sniff out the truth behind his death in order to keep Sally from using up her nine lives. The humor is playful rather than clawed in this slinky feline extravaganza from veteran author Babson (Canapes for the Kitties, etc.).

From Booklist

Whereas Lydia Adamson's cat-titled novels (see above) have definite appeal beyond cat-crazy readers, Babson's cat capers are best recommended to feline fans only. In the case of this tale of murder and mistaken identity set in London, the cats are the most entertaining part of the story, while the mystery itself is relatively flat. Annabel Hinchby-Smythe, who feeds gossip tidbits to a tabloid, agrees to redecorate billionaire Arthur Arbuthnot's flat. When he is murdered, his faithful feline companion, Sally, suddenly is in danger. Annabel kidnaps Sally to protect her, and the fun begins. Readers who love cats will enjoy the Annabel/Sally relationship but will certainly hate Arbuthnot's family and employees, most of whom want to kill Sally. On that score Babson loses, as the very audience who will like this book must, by rights, hate the supporting characters, would-be cat killers all. Her portrayal of the kindhearted, martini-swigging Annabel is a winner, however, as are the descriptions of various feline characters. Jenny McLarin

Loved the personalities of the different cats. It was difficult to figure out the murderer amongst such a dysfunctional family.

Straight forward mystery. Likeable though not very fleshed out protagonist, or other characters. Cats were more differentiated. Lovely with a margarita.

I love cats which is why I picked up this book (and I'd read other Marian Babson books previously and enjoyed them).

Yes, there are cat(s) featured in story, but as much as I have enjoyed other mysteries featuring cats, I wasn't all that thrilled with this one, mostly because I really didn't like the protagonist Annabel Hinchby-Smythe despite her concern with the cats.

The plot is simple, eccentric billionaire is killed and leaves fortune to his kitty.

This book clearly was written by someone who understands cat lovers and knows what it would take to push one into stealing not one but three cats from under the noses of a bevy of ailurophobes intent on preventing a friendly tabby from inheriting the fortune left to her by her murdered owner. If you're on the side of the cats, as I am, you will thoroughly enjoy this sprightly whodunit.

I took a chance on this author and I'm glad I did. Watching the main character doing her balancing cats act provided an entertaining evening. While the story line wasn't particularly complicated, there was enough development of characters to provide a good read.

This isn't her best cat mystery, it's a little bit slow to take off--but once she hit her stride and got into the characterization of the protagonist it flew! When the heroine interprets what her kitties are thinking, it's just the way I am myself--YOU know what I mean. This author doesn't only write cat stories. I hope someday Amazon offers the others, as well, before I wear out my paperbacks!
