Sister of the Brotherhood Kindle Edition
The Brotherhood of Power is dedicated to training those throughout the Twin Kingdoms who possess the rare ability to transform the very substance of physical matter. For centuries this power has been found only in boys - until a member of the Brotherhood visits a remote mountain village.
Orphaned as an infant, Arien instinctively learned to hide the abilities that marked her as different from everyone she's ever known. The discovery of others who share her gift offers her a hope she never dreamed possible. Could she find a home among those who are like her? But her hopes are dashed when she arrives at the Hall of the Brotherhood. The inflexible men who lead the powerful and formidable institution will never accept a girl. Once again, Arien is a peculiarity, an oddity who doesn't fit in.
When a smuggler arrives at the king's palace with a covert message, Arien is called upon to use her power to save the Twin Kingdoms from attack by a hostile empire. Her assignment will put her deepest desire within reach. But she must choose between her longing for acceptance and her duty to the king. Between the family she craves and the people she has come to love.

Ginny Patrick weaves adeptly details that create atmosphere and world. For example, when the heroine, Arien, leaves her small village with Petro, her teacher, she encounters the forest for truly the first time. She sees the flash of the white tail of a deer through the trees, hears the rattling of leaves in the wind. The author establishes her unique universe swiftly, drawing the reader in. By page 3 the reader understands that some individuals have unique gifts of the mind—gifts that can be a curse or a blessing for them and those around them.
As Arien moves out into the world, learns how to use her powers, and finds her place in society, she will face the essential question of what her origin is, who is she and is not in contrast with her biological family. As her special powers grow, so does her place in and responsibility to society. Her journey through the book is that of the heroine’s journey—by finding her special powers and using them to heal society, she heals herself from the losses of her early childhood and finds what her purpose is.
Ginny Patrick knows how to forge scenes of deep feeling and significance as well. In one scene, I could almost feel the salt tears, the deep grief and love between two characters. Such scenes are difficult to handle as a writer—they must be rendered convincingly and honestly-and the writer must be careful not to descend into cheap, manipulative sentimentality. She handles the emotions and motivations of both female and male characters with insight and accuracy.
I look forward to seeing more fantasy books by Ginny Patrick in the future and need to hunt down her previous works. I think I’ll be a happy, content reader this winter.
Small town girl, Arien, knows she is different than other children in her village. Able to heal small aches and pains, Arien is liked by the youngsters but always feels separated from others her age and the adults. A visiting member of The Brotherhood senses Arien's ability and takes her to The Hall of the Brotherhood to further her gift. Problem is, the place is called Hall of the Brotherhood for a reason. They haven't accepted sisters in centuries. Arien's powers strengthen and she is called upon to help save the Kingdom. But at what cost? The more of her true past she uncovers, the more questions arise. Ginny Patrick created a richly textured world both in history and varied characters. Her story soon drew me in, and I finished reading it much too quickly. I really enjoyed this start of a great series and look forward to finding how Arien will save the Three Kingdoms and find her true place in it all. Sister of the Brotherhood is a great read and recommended for those who enjoy character-driven stories in an epic fantasy world.
