Firm Ambitions (Attorney Rachel Gold Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition

"Rachel remains one of the more engaging sleuths on the mystery scene." —Publishers Weekly

After the death of her father, attorney Rachel Gold has returned to her hometown of St. Louis to spend more time with her mother. The savvy and beautiful Rachel, who made a name for herself in complex corporate litigation in Chicago, finds herself enmeshed in Landau v. Landau, a high-stakes divorce case far nastier than any of her former lawsuits. And, as she will soon find out, far deadlier.

Rachel's client is Eileen Landau, the best friend of her sister Ann. Eileen and Ann are just two of many wealthy, bored housewives who get their kicks three days a week in an aerobics classes conducted by the handsome fitness guru, Andros, at an upscale gym. Eileen, however, gets some additional kicks once or twice a week with Andros at an upscale hotel.

Shortly after his last tryst with Eileen, Andros is found dead. The coroner determines the cause of death as cyanide poisoning. The trail of clues leads not to Eileen but to Ann, Rachel's sister, who was having her own affair with Andros.

Suddenly, Rachel has a personal stake in the case. But as she works her way through the list of angry wives seduced and scorned by Andros, she realizes that sex may not have been the motive behind his seductions. Indeed, Andros may have been doing the bidding of a puppet master far more dangerous—someone with few qualms about eliminating a semi-incompetent accomplice, and none about eliminating a competent lawyer whose investigation threatens a multi-million-dollar criminal enterprise.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An amorous and energetic aerobics instructor named Andros comes to an untimely end in the third outing for St. Louis attorney Rachel Gold (after Grave Designs and Death Benefits ). It turns out that Andros has been romancing a number of his students (porno pictures provide evidence), among them Rachel's sister, Ann, who becomes one of the suspects. Together with her mother (with whom Rachel now lives) and her raunchy sidekick Benny Goldberg, Rachel delves into a complex network of Andros's business and personal connections, persevering despite death threats, obstructive witnesses and noncooperative attorneys. Kahn, a lawyer himself, has a keen eye for details, both legalistic (Rachel is merciless to those less intelligent) and familial. Although the pieces fit together a bit too neatly toward the end, Rachel remains one of the more engaging sleuths on the mystery scene. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Series protagonist Rachel Gold (Death Benefits, Dutton, 1992) is a good divorce lawyer. Here, she agrees to help Eileen Landau, a friend of her sister, who wants to "drop" her pandering husband. Rachel's investigations uncover more than she bargained for, however, when police accuse her sister of murdering Eileen's lover, a hunky aerobic stud muffin-also known as a gambler. Now that her sister is involved, Rachel switches into high gear, and the widely publicized sex scandal fuels high-speed action and consummate thrills. Good narrative and a great read. Michael Kahn is a trial lawyer by day and an award-winning author at night. He wrote his first novel, GRAVE DESIGNS, on a challenge from his wife Margi, who got tired of listening to the same answer whenever she asked him about a book he was reading. "Not bad," he would say, "but I could write a better book than that." "Then write one, honey," she finally said, "or please shut up." So he shut up for a long time, and then he wrote one.

A former elementary school teacher, Mike is the author of BAD TRUST and 10 other Rachel Gold novels; a legal thriller, THE MOURNING SEXTON, under the pen name Michael Baron; THE SIRENA QUEST (2015), a stand-alone novel that he describes, in Hollywood jargon, as "a Baby Boomer version of 'The Big Chill' meets 'The Maltese Falcon'"; and PLAYED! (2017), which features, as Booklist wrote, "the same sharp dialogue, wit, and clever plotting his fans have come to expect." He is also the author of numerous short stories, including the three collected in A HANDFUL OF GOLD.

In addition to his day job as a lawyer, he is an adjunct professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches a class on censorship and free expression. Married to his high school sweetheart, he is the father of five and the grandfather of, so far, ten.

His proudest moment as a writer: when his children took one of his books to school for show-and-tell.

Another excellent Michael Kahn law oriented mystery.

I really liked this book. I enjoyed the main character, the plot and, being a St. Louisan, all of the local atmosphere.

Rachel Gold is Everywoman of today! She is smart, witty, shrewd, career-minded, independent and clever. Michael A. Kahn does an excellent job of embodying a successful female lawyer, and can keep a reader captivated. I was never much into mysteries, but I picked up this book on a whim and when I got home, I couldn't put it down! So many twists and turns, plenty of drama and quite a few laughs. Highly recommended!

#3 in Kahn's Rachel Gold series.

The mystery is less interesting, more prosaic than that in the first two books. But it held my attention. Besides, I am primarily reading to spend time with Rachel, especially her hilarious interactions with Benny.

Interesting note: The first book was set in Chicago. In #2, the heroine still lived there, but spent the entire time in St Louis (her hometown) on a case. I guess the author found that setting more interesting (I certainly do), because now Rachel lives back in St Louis full time. Good choice, I think.

SPOILER: I do think the author has fallen into a weird recurring pattern with the heroine's love life. Here's hoping that is dropped for book #4.

Love this mystery series. I love reading about Rachel Gold and following she changed and develops as a character. The mystery stories are good, leaving you guessing the outcome to the end. I picture her as a cute bubbly young lawyer off on her own for the first time. It is easy to step I to her shoes while you are reading the books

a swarthy fitness guru who sexercises with rich suburbanites is poisoned. a weak link in an otherwise praiseworthy rachel gold series. a straightforward who-done-it lacking the usual consideration of weightier legal issues.

Rachel Gold is cool. Tho a lawyer, she spends most of her time 'detecting' along with her mother and a lifelong friend, Benny, a rotund fancier of foods and females. They are all working on freeing her sister Ann from a murder rap. Good book, a little heavy on the sexual inuendo and 'out' uendo too. Lots of plots, counter plots, dead ends and runarounds. It doesn't fully resolve until almost the final page.

On second thought, she really didn't solve the mystery. Our Rachel did find out why someone was murdered, but didn't really find out who done it. In the less than clever denouement the killer more or less walks up to Ms. Gold and admits the crime. The author can't think of a way for our sleuth to solve the mystery? You sort of get the feeling that Michael Kahn put the names of all the characters on a dart board and chose the one hit by his flying dart to be the big baddie. I don't know if I care for this random selection technique. Kahn's Rachel Gold books have gotten good reviews, so maybe this just isn't one of his better ones. The main characters are fairly interesting, and the male author seems to do a good job of being able to write about a female protagonist, but all in all this book is not very fast paced.
