The Perfect Game Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

Lauren Rose moved to Phoenix to begin a new life as she starts a prestigious emergency medicine residency, but she could end up doing life in the Arizona State penitentiary instead.

Lauren has always lived in the shadow of her more glamorous sister Liz, the wife of baseball superstar Jake Wakefield. But when Liz is found viciously murdered in her Scottsdale home, the spotlight turns to Lauren as prime suspect in the high-profile investigation.

Having lost both parents at an early age, Liz's death leaves Lauren all alone in a new city. Jake's support proves invaluable as she navigates the nightmare her life has become. As Lauren spends time with Jake, they develop a closeness that she finds both comforting and confusing. It's an intimacy forged by their shared grief, their mutual love of baseball, and by the thrill of him pitching a perfect game for the Diamondbacks.

Meanwhile, the Scottsdale police repeatedly question Lauren. She objects to a lie detector test as bad science. An arrest warrant is issued. The ensuing trial leads the evening news every night as a rabid public just can't get enough of the sordid proceedings, quickly dubbed "The Trial of the Millennium." Will the outcome be influenced by this media circus?

Review

Kirby, a practicing clinical psychologist, makes her debut with an exceptional mystery that reveals the dark side of the lucrative, glitzy world of professional baseball. When Lauren Rose, an emergency-medicine intern at Phoenix Good Samaritan Hospital, learns that her sister, Liz, has been murdered, she quickly becomes a suspect in the case. Liz’s handsome husband, Jake Wakefield, a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, is also implicated. Wakefield protests his innocence while striking up an inappropriate flirtation with Lauren, who makes matters even worse when the results of her police-ordered lie detector test are ruled inconclusive. The investigative work of two Scottsdale PD detectives ensures an arrest and courtroom trial. Both prosecution and defense introduce damning evidence, including surprise witnesses, deleted Internet searches, and video surveillance. Kirby elevates what could have been a straightforward court-case drama into a game of strategy and cunning that’s a cut above the rest. (Mar.) (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)

The Perfect Game by Leslie Dana Kirby (Poisoned Pen Press)

Liz Wakefield has been murdered, bludgeoned to death in her own home in what police initially believe was a botched robbery. Much of her expensive jewelry is missing. As the investigation continues, however, the police of Scottsddale, Arizona, begin to focus on two suspects close to home. One is Dr. Lauren Rose, Liz's younger sister, who is doing her medical residency at a local hospital, and the other is Jake Wakefield, Liz's husband and the star pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Lauren is the sole beneficiary of Liz's one million dollar life insurance policy, and some argue that she had developed a jealousy toward her rich sister. Jake has been an unfaithful husband, and although he claims not to have known it, Liz had seen a divorce lawyer just days before her murder.

Eventually there is an arrest and much of the remainder of the novel focuses on the lengthy courtroom proceeding as the skilled prosecutor struggles to build a case that would show the defendant guilty beyond reasonable doubt - and the high-powered defense attorneys pull out all of the stops in their attempts to create doubt in the minds of at least some of the jurors.

Then there is a verdict, and then there is another murder!

Except for the modern setting, The Perfect Game reminds me to a certain degree of the older Perry Mason novels of Erle Stanley Gardner where the focus of the books was on the intellectual duels between the lawyers. Gardner always gave his readers an insider's view of the workings of the law, and Leslie Dana Kirby skillfully does the same with her novel.

Surprisingly, Kirby is not a lawyer in "real" life, but a psychologist - and that field of knowledge helps to layer her characters to a point where they are both complex and entirely believable. The plotting is first rate, taking into account the steady building of a criminal case and punctuating it with the twists and hairpin-turns that keep the reader from drifting into complacency.

The Perfect Game is an exciting read, one that educates readers about the mechanics of police investigations and murder trials while telling a gripping story. I recommend it without reservation.

I selected this book because of the Phoenix setting and tie-in to Diamondbacks baseball. I generally don't choose courtroom/legal thrillers, but the character development and relationships kept me interested. And I especially liked the luck and irony that brought justice at the end.

Although I love baseball I rarely read baseball oriented books. I am an avid modern romance fan. A cousin of mine told me about this book at Christmas and that is was available on Amazon. She called it a courtroom mystery. I thought OK I will try it. What a surprise!. The book is a fast read with enjoyable characters, a few laughs, and a great ending. I would recommend it to anyone to read. In fact am recommending it to my daughter's book club and to my blind aunt's audio library to see about having an audio for them made. A very enjoyable treat and must read!!

Quite possibly the most inane book I have ever read. The story of a naive doctor combined with the best baseball player in history is very absurd.

I love a good legal thriller so I was really excited to read The Perfect Game. The wife of a famous baseball star is murdered. The two main suspects are her husband, Jake, and her sister, Lauren. Jake and Lauren bond over their grief and a shared love of baseball which just complicates everything. The media takes full advantage and starts to paint Lauren as the jealous sister who wanted her sister's life. Did Lauren really murder her sister?

I enjoyed this book but there were a couple of things lacking for me. First, Lauren does some incredibly stupid things and is definitely lacking in common sense. Why in the world would you ever start a romance with your murdered sister's husband?? Even if there's an attraction there, it's inappropriate. As a character, she seemed very intelligent and seemed to have a good head on her shoulders so her relationship with Jake didn't seem to fit. Then again, grief can change how a person would normally act, so there's that. Second, I did not like the ending. The culprit got what they deserved but the way it happened didn't sit well with me. I didn't feel like what happened was in character for anyone involved. I felt like the details of the ending were there more for shock value than as a real resolution.

Despite those things, the book was enjoyable. It moved along quickly and there were a couple of nice twists. I did figure out what was going on pretty early on, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment at all. Fans of baseball will enjoy some of the scenes and conversations but those who are not fans, like myself, won't be turned off by them. The courtroom drama is not quite on par with legal thriller authors like John Grisham but it was still very exciting and those were my favorite scenes.

Overall, this was a solid read that I really enjoyed. Exciting legal drama, murder mystery, quick pace and some interesting twists. This is worth picking up if you enjoy the genre.

Entertaining story which moved forward at a good pace. Dr. Kirby uses her knowledge of the medical and legal systems to weave a compelling story of betrayal and, ultimately, revenge. Considerable courtroom drama and details of medical investigation.
