Review

“[Thirty] years after it first appeared, the wisdom of The 7 Habits is more relevant than ever. On an individual level people are burning out, and on a collective level we are burning up the planet. So Dr. Covey’s emphasis on self-renewal and his understanding that leadership and creativity require us to tap into our own physical, mental, and spiritual resources are exactly what we need now.” —Arianna Huffington

“No person lasts forever, but books and ideas can endure. Stephen R. Covey’s life is done, but his work is not. It continues, right here in this book as alive today as when first written.”
—Jim Collins

“Every so often a book comes along that not only alters the lives of readers but leaves an imprint on the culture itself.
The 7 Habits is one of those books.” —Daniel Pink, author of Drive and When

I bought the first edition of this book as soon as it was published. Today, I'm even more impressed by this new edition.

Bragging moment: Many years ago, at BYU's Education Week, I was walking next to Stephen Covey as we left a class about homeschooling. In that class, the speaker had used a quadrant-based drawing to explain his approach to education.

As we walked and talked - Stephen told me how the quadrants approach worked with one of his current projects, too. I was fascinated by this very visual way to understand concepts.

And then, saying a quick goodbye, Stephen started speed-walking to... well, wherever he was going to, next. (I was on my way to the next Education Week class.)

So, in that moment, I had a glimpse into a vital organizational approach that was emerging, even before Stephen Covey's book was available.

I've never forgotten it.

Anyway...

That may be why Covey's advice resonated with me, as soon as I read the first edition of this book.

Today, I'm even more impressed with this edition. I'm enjoying it even more than past editions, with a new context and fresh outlook.

If you're trying to accomplish anything in life, not just in business, I think this is more than just a "must read."

In fact, it's a book that belongs in every home and office.

I think we all want to make a difference in life, and the best - and most satisfying - way to do that is to be effective. For me, the 7 Habits approach always works, and this book is the very best way to make the most of it.

Disappointed Stephan felt he had to interject his political bias filter into forward. As your book clearly states we all see things through different filters. Why does he need to add his filter? Seems counter to his book who is teaching you to recognize filters.

This was the most impactful book I read when I was young. Hope the rest stays true to form!

my boss recommended this book, so I read it. And it is good. I had already thought through or encountered most of the ideas in this book before I read it, but Im kinda old. I think this book would have been great for a younger me, but sadly a younger me would have probably thought it was boring and not read it, infact Im pretty sure it was recommended to me when I was younger and I did just that.
The truths in this book are really well presented, and undeniable. I think most people will be more effective if they live by these, but it probably appeals to some personalities more than others.
Bottom line is, Im glad I read this. Im probably a better person for reading it. You will probably be a little bit better if you read it.

I would have lived a different life if I read this in my 20's.
This isn't a quick-fix book. And you have to be ready to really look at yourself and make some changes.
In my life, I have not heard the "simple stuff" that we all need laid out like this. It's light-hearted, but serious. And it's nicely balanced in family, marriage, kids, and business.
This is not a "how to win friends and influence people" kind of book. This is real.
Are you ready to really dig in? Then this is the book for you.

Everyone should read this book!
Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024
This is book for personal development and relationship management. In this book, the author used a top-down, inside-out approach to help the readers to develop effectiveness in their personal life and in their relationship with others.

This approach belongs to so called the character ethic approaches, which emphasizes that "there are basic principles of effective living, and that people can only experience true success and enduring happiness as they learn and integrate these principles into their basic character."

The author's argument is that developing a principle center of ourselves is essential to form an effective, mature, independent individual, which becomes the foundation for trustworthy, interdependent relationships with others.

The seven principles and the corresponding seven habits presented in this book are thus a part of a sequential development process. From top to down, from inside to outside, this process allows the reader to introspect, evaluate and then change their own paradigms of life and finally to live in harmony with their principles, their values in an ever-changing, challenging, interdependent environment.

Reviewed in the Netherlands on February 2, 2024

This book is like a life transformation journey for everyone. It talks about things which seems to be very common across and on first reading many people will find nothing new in there, but that is the main crux of this book. It doesn't try to teach you anything new but just leads you to what you need to explore more and reach higher level of maturity.
