The Life We Choose Kindle Edition

Decisions and destiny in lush Northeast Texas…Everyone knew the Murdocks of Murdock Mains were a fractured family, so when life circumstances reunites them along the banks of the Sulphur River in Northeast Texas, it’s not a question of when drama will erupt; rather, what the toll will be. With a special needs son, independent daughter Maren bore enough responsibility even before being pressured by elder brother Price to help him deal with their angry, embittered father. Cap has suffered a bad accident, which uncovers another health issue that will force him to be forever reliant on the very offspring he abused and rejected. Price, however, isn’t quite the heroic, big brother Maren once adored. Fed up with being treated like less than a ranch hand, he struck out on his own. As a result, the siblings’ happy reunion is showing cracks, as some of Price’s tactics and choices could expose decisions that aren’t as ethical as they should be. Maren finds unexpected help in Dr. Gabriel Cabrera, the area veterinarian, whose failed marriage to his lifelong friend and sweetheart has left him lonely, but too cautious to do much about it. Until he realizes that he and Maren’s paths had crossed before—at another life-altering moment. Decisions and destiny vibrate through this lush and dramatic story of loss, loneliness, and love’s triumph through faith.

The Life We Choose, written by Myers & Reed, is a compelling novel about a fractured family that will break your heart and restore your faith. The characters are so richly developed that you’ll be thinking about them long after you’ve closed the book and contemplating how brokenness often leads to the greatest, unexpected blessings.

A wonderful story based in a small community in Northeast Texas, not far from where I live, but the reader does not need to be from our neck of the woods to enjoy this novel. Their descriptions of people and places in the rural community are so well written and the characters so well developed that you will feel that they are your neighbors. It is a beautiful depiction of a mother's dedication to her special needs son and how she maneuvers through everything that life throws at her. This is the second book by Myers and Reed and I highly recommend them both. After you enjoy this book, check out "Life & Spice". You won't be disappointed.

Wow, what a story! This touches on some deep subjects that almost all families can relate--an elderly parent not ready to give up driving but past the time when he should, a special needs child being bullied at school, a family divided. It all comes down to the kind of life we choose for ourselves and those choices determine if we find happiness or nothing but regrets. Great characters, a beautiful story, excellent writing by Myers and Reed! I'm already anxious for their next one. I predict it'll be a keeper as this one was.

The Life We Choose is another beautifully crafted novel from the writing team of Helen Myers and Gail Reed. The reader is taken on a journey of jarring betrayal, stunning truths, and unexpected redemption. Layered characterizations, complex agendas, a cruel elder, a young man with special needs, the sometimes lethal demands of the land and its inhabitants, and the reality of surviving a profoundly dysfunctional family forms the core of this remarkable novel. That Maren and Gabriel find each other, despite being swept up into the chaos and uncertainty swirling about them, speaks to the triumph of their love. A five star treat, and a bookshelf keeper!

From the Prologue's first line until the last line of the book, I was entranced. Having lived in this part of the world for a time, I can almost see the land and the people that populate it. There's a realness to the story. My heart alternately ached and then rejoiced for Marin and Joseph, Price and Lucy, Willis and Bernice, Lucien, and, of course, Gabe as they find wholeness in rural Texas. Well done, Helen (Myers) and Gail (Reed). Well done!!
