I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 651 ratings

A look at the culture and fanaticism of book lovers, from the beloved New York Times illustrator and creator of Incidental Comics.

It’s no secret, but we are judged by our bookshelves. We learn to read at an early age, and as we grow older we shed our beloved books for new ones. But some of us surround ourselves with books. We collect them, decorate with them, are inspired by them, and treat our books as sacred objects. In this lighthearted collection of one- and two-page comics, writer-artist Grant Snider explores bookishness in all its forms, and the love of writing and reading, building on the beloved literary comics featured on his website, Incidental Comics.
I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf is the perfect gift for bookworms of all ages.

“This playful, self-aware collection of strips and gags on the joys and frustrations of reading and writing is equal parts lighthearted and sincere . . . The panels range from gently clever to surprisingly profound to laugh-out-loud.” —Publishers Weekly

“A prescient book for these times.” —Newsarama

I discovered Grant Snider from Sketchbook in the New York Times Book Review. I liked his cartoon so well that I electronically checked his new book out from the library. Not being a fan of graphic novels, I did not have high expectations. Half way through the book, I realized that I had to own It. I couldn’t wait until it arrived, so that I could finish reading it from my own copy.

I was not disappointed. The cover had a delightful surprise. It looks like a children’s book, but the contents run deep. Snider wrote from a true reader and writer’s heart, which exactly mirrored my own heart. I love books and would like to be a writer.

Every page I turn in this book makes me laugh or think, so it will sit on a table of honor near my bookshelf forever. Anyone who wants to judge me by my bookshelf, feel free. There is no better way to know me.

I will think twice before I turn up my nose to a graphic book again.

I enjoyed this book of comics about books - both reading and writing them. There were cute Easter eggs and references that warrant a second look at each comic. I'd recommend it for readers of all ages.

... a fun and interesting trip into Grant Snider's psyche. Didn't know it was going to be a comic collection but, okay, lots of tips about writing and writers are sprinkled throughout in humorous freeform thought. There was no judgement of my bookshelf or anyone else's here which was disappointing given the misleading title. Cute but not a reread, mostly meh.

This book needs 10 stars. I have seen a few of his cartoons in the NYorker, but didn’t know he had written this and a couple others - yes I will be buying those too. Every chapter and every page was perfect. Definitions were not only hysterical, they were insightful, honest and spot on. Progression on subjects was also lovely (see reading to a child). I want to copy several to post in our library for their humor but also for direction - how to read, what to read, how to write, etc. thank you for such a wonderful (and quick!) read. And reread.

I love this comic collection. As an author I found it very relatable and encouraging.

The art is cute, the words profound and the puns plentiful. I highly recommend this book to any lover of poetry, literature, or the English language.

It's a bunch of very smart cartoons about reading and writing poetry and books, so it's very short, but any book lover will really enjoy it. I especially enjoyed the Pig Latin cartoons, since my father was a Latin teacher. The proofreading punctuation chart was pretty funny too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rolig bok med korta tecknade serier

En bok som handlar om böcker och talar direkt till bokälskare. Köpte en till mig själv och några månader senare en till som present till en vän (som också älskar böcker). Boken är underhållande och varje tecknad serie tar 1-2 sidor, något som gör boken lättläst.

I resemble a lot of the different readers and am so glad to see that there are others who read many different forms. It was a great mix of literature styles, reading styles and writers,I loved seeing all the differences. I keep thinking that I need to send it to my mother if only she used her kindle. I found the drawing style refreshing and simple yet with enough mystical feeling to be special. I must applaud the author and hope that they keep drawing/ writing.
