I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf Kindle & comiXology

4.4 out of 5 stars 782 ratings

A look at the culture and fanaticism of book lovers, from the beloved New York Times illustrator and creator of Incidental Comics.

It’s no secret, but we are judged by our bookshelves. We learn to read at an early age, and as we grow older we shed our beloved books for new ones. But some of us surround ourselves with books. We collect them, decorate with them, are inspired by them, and treat our books as sacred objects. In this lighthearted collection of one- and two-page comics, writer-artist Grant Snider explores bookishness in all its forms, and the love of writing and reading, building on the beloved literary comics featured on his website, Incidental Comics.
I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf is the perfect gift for bookworms of all ages.

“This playful, self-aware collection of strips and gags on the joys and frustrations of reading and writing is equal parts lighthearted and sincere . . . The panels range from gently clever to surprisingly profound to laugh-out-loud.” —Publishers Weekly

“A prescient book for these times.” —Newsarama

I confess that this book took me by surprise in every way possible. First of all, I had no idea it was a comic and then when I found out how long it was I was really shocked! This had to have taken an eternity to illustrate and write!

It was however very clever and well done and covers just about everything that a fanatical reader and or writer could possibly consider. It was fun and I admit to enjoying a little at a time for quite a while. This isn’t a comic you sit down and enjoy like a story, but it is the story of all of us obsessed readers.

I liked it enough to give this a solid four stars and people who are into this sort of thing would probably give it five.

... a fun and interesting trip into Grant Snider's psyche. Didn't know it was going to be a comic collection but, okay, lots of tips about writing and writers are sprinkled throughout in humorous freeform thought. There was no judgement of my bookshelf or anyone else's here which was disappointing given the misleading title. Cute but not a reread, mostly meh.

This book needs 10 stars. I have seen a few of his cartoons in the NYorker, but didn’t know he had written this and a couple others - yes I will be buying those too. Every chapter and every page was perfect. Definitions were not only hysterical, they were insightful, honest and spot on. Progression on subjects was also lovely (see reading to a child). I want to copy several to post in our library for their humor but also for direction - how to read, what to read, how to write, etc. thank you for such a wonderful (and quick!) read. And reread.

Definitely for book lovers only. Some clever wordplay and cute illustrations. Would be good for a gift. Two warnings: it gets a little repetitive if you don’t read it in small bits and about a third of the book is actually about writing, not reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rolig bok med korta tecknade serier

5.0 out of 5 stars Formidable
Reviewed in Spain on March 6, 2021
