Safe Passage: Words to Help the Grieving Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

A Compassionate Companion for Those Facing Loss

Guiding you through the grieving process. The losses we face impact us in different ways, but there are certain steps that naturally take us through the grieving process and ultimately lead to healing. In this grief recovery handbook by Molly Fumia, we are gently guided through these steps by words of profound wisdom and insight. Her writing speaks both to those who don’t know how to begin processing a loss and to those who have long been suffering under the weight of grief.

Contemplative meditations. The grieving process is a slow one, but it is only by going through each of the steps that recovery is achieved. With this in mind, Fumia provides meditative reflections for readers to sit with and focus on. By encouraging us to take the necessary time to contemplate our feelings, Fumia opens a space for us to face our grief and equips us to handle what comes with that challenge.

Find healing and hope. Healing after loss can seem impossible, but Fumia assures us that there is hope to be found. As an expert on grief, as well as one who has personally experienced devastating loss, Fumia provides a deeply thoughtful roadmap for the difficult journey we face after profound losses in our lives. In leading us through the stages of grief, from near disbelief and denial to acceptance and growth, this meditation book provides a helping hand to all those lost in grief.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here is a book of exquisite honesty and profound depth. The author guides us through the passages of grief--indeed, through the mysteries of life and death themselves toward healing and hope. Along the way, grief becomes a dance in the dark and suffering turns to love."—Sue Monk Kidd, Author of The Secret life of Bees and The Dance of the Dissident Daughter

For those who are grieving but cannot handle a full book, this is a perfect solution. Each page has only one small paragraph which has a saying/story/quote about grieving. A great little companion for those who need some support. Highly recommend.

This is a book to have on hand for anyone that is grieving. A perfect gift and one that will translate to almost anyone who receives it. Beautiful cover and size.

My first copy was a gift after my husband died. I found the book so helpful I wanted to share it with friends who were newly widowed. However, even after 2 years, and even 4 years, I was not ready to give it up. I still go back to it and the pages I have marked. I have bought 4 or 5 more copies to give instead. I found Fumoia's organizational approach very helpful. She begins with the feelings and issues or the first days and weeks following the death of a loved one. She then progresses through stages of grief, ending with hope and help as a grieving person reaches a time with he or she is ready to turn their face to a future without that loved one. Readings are short. I took my time and went back several times as I bounced around in the grief cycle which seldom progresses in a straight line. I was reassured over and over that what I was experiencing was normal for me and I was not crazy. Another thing I appreciated is that, while Fumia endorses spirituality, she does not reference one specific path nor belief system. I hope it is as helpful for anyone else who purchases it..

I can't say "I enjoyed this book" because I bought it for a purpose. It is well written, I was just a little put out by the paragraph format (Ther is a large capital letter in the margin, and the word to which it belongs is often much higher on the page. Once I got used to that, there was no problem.

Everyone grieves at one time or another and to say it goes away is unrealistic. This little book was given to me by someone I barely knew after I lost my son. To say it helped would be a lie. What it did do is remind me that grief is like nature, you cannot control it, but you can tame it once in awhile by listening to other grieving souls. Their words have a way of comforting, even if briefly.

This the best book I have ever found on the subject of grieving - which we will all do at some point in our lives - most likely more than once. I have given this to people who have lost a loved one, endured the pain of saying good-bye to a beloved pet, waded thru the bewilderment of a broken relationship, etc. Molly has separated the book into 6 sections : Beginnings, Navigation, Surrender, Transformation, Continuance and Connection. Every page will have you saying "That's how I feel" From page 95 " Our inclination to subject tragedy to comparison threatens recognition of the universal experience, and more importantly, our freedom to feel. The magnitude of our loss is irrelevant and ultimately incalculable" When you feel you can't find the "right" words to comfort a friend, or distance separates you, send this book.

A friend of mine bought this book for me after my husband died of cancer. I felt as if my life had shattered into a million pieces (I was 8 months pregnant with our second child) and there was not much that gave me comfort. However, this book was the best grief book I read. It is not an outline of how you should feel, or what to do, it is simply a collection of quotes and thoughtful insights related to grief and loss. You can pick it up and put it down easily and the book moves through different emotions from the beginning to the end. I highly recommend it to anyone suffering from the loss of a loved one.

if you are looking for a book to help heal you after losing someone you love then this is the book for you. I was given this book 10 years ago after I lost my mom and I still read it often. Opening it to a random page. A friend of mine just lost her father so I ordered it for her. Hope it helps her as much as it has helped me.
