There’s no shortage of laughs when Jess is around; she’s been cursed to have nobody take her seriously. But her dubious talent comes in handy when she meets the very handsome showman Magnus. He promises to fake taking her seriously—if Jess joins his traveling show.
 
But first they must see the Good Magician. He will give them the use of the flying Fire Boat to tour the realm if they complete a quest. The only problem is, he can’t remember what quest. Something to do with night mares, day mares, and one or two future princesses.

    What can I say. This is a Xanth book. It is the series that started my love of reading over 30 years ago and It still delivers magical adventures today.
    I enjoyed the characters of Jess and Magnus more than I did the previous protagonists Dell and Nia. I thought Dell was too one note in needing Nia to lead him around. I really enjoy the five portrait kids and hope to see more of them.

    I love the Xanth Series of books. I have read every single one as soon as it comes out. Piers makes them fun, they are full of puns, and you get to know the characters and enjoy them. They are pure fantasy, full of all sorts of creatures and Piers is really good about answering fan mail himself. I'll be sad with his age when the final one is written. I've been reading and enjoying them since the late 70's. If you are easily offended by inuendo these aren't the books for you as each book is about characters meeting and falling in love with each other with lots of teasing along the way as well as having a quest they do together which is where the storyline comes in.

    I have been enjoying the fantasy world of Xanth for well over a decade now. I have loved each and every story and have already pre-ordered the next one. The puns get better with every story. If I could offer a single critique, in recent years there has been an increase in grammatical errors. Not so much as to distract from the overall experience, but noticeable if one is keen to that sort of thing.
    That being said, Jess's story was remarkable. I greatly appreciated the discussion of serious topics by the characters within the book. I will enjoy adding this one to my growing collection.
