A History of Scottish Football in 100 Objects: The Alternative Football Museum Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

The comedy writer’s collection of “artifacts dedicated to controversial, silly and bonkers mishaps . . . [a] tribute to an alternative football history” (Daily Record).

Andy Bollen has created a fantasy football museum to collect together a treasure trove of Scottish football exhibits that ranges from Jimmy Johnstone’s oar to Aggie the tea lady’s trolley. Learn why Puskás and Socrates should’ve been Scottish, the versatility of the pie and Napoleon’s links to Bovril and explore all the wonders of the game north of the Border—from Arthur Montford to the phone-in, Think Tanks, Buckfast, vanishing cream for referees, Twitter, VAR technology and flares (pyrotechnics, not 1970s attire). These exhibits distill the beauty of Scottish football into an entertaining volume that will make the perfect gift for any fan.

Taking a satirical swipe at the beautifully flawed game,
A History of Scottish Football in 100 Objects covers the mayhem, mavericks and bric-a-brac from the magic sponge, to the pie, hair weaves to tattoos. Bollen is the perfect curator: impeccably informed, passionate and insightful.

4.0 out of 5 stars a nice little tour

Is anyone else irritated by the use of the word ‘treble’ in the context of going for three trophies in a football season? Everybody knows, I should think, that the word ‘treble’ is a musical term not a prefix meaning three which, of course should be triple. So why do they do it? this is a book that typically does that and yet complains, rants in fact, about cliches and the incorrect use of words or, to put it the way the book does, people that don’t talk like human beings. It does descend in to rant mode sometimes but, I actually like this book. it’s fun though at times it does seem to digress and talk about exhibits that, while they do touch on scottish football, there are stories that have nothing to do with Scotland. Incidentally, some of the facts are wrong. The Tokyo athletics championship spoken about in this book took place in 1993 not 1991 and well, excuse me but, whasn’t Alan wells of Moschow fame a sprinter? In the book he swam but I’m sure he sprinted didn’t he? Didn’t he wear those long baggy sorts? I’m sure he did. Yet, for all its faults I think the book is entertaining at any rate. I like the style and the tone of the book. I agree with a lot of the comments made here and yes, I would recommend it to footy fans of the beautiful game if only because it hits the mark concerning football fans and football in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched, brilliantly funny, and jam packed with anecdotes!

This book is not just a great Christmas stocking filler, but a unique and original take on a journey through the urban myths, legends and artefacts on display in the author’s alternative Scottish football museum. I can’t recommend this book highly enough, so if you are looking for something well researched, funny and jam parked with anecdotes, then this is the book for you.

I read Andy Bollen’s new book and didn’t want it to finish. I’m a big football fan and thought I knew most stories but this is great. 100 objects so well researched and written. I have recommended this book to so many people now and all come back to me raving about it. Loved it, a great read.

A bit different from the usual football books.
Great to look back to the good old days, when football was a ' sport ' for the working man..
