A giant wildfire is roaring through Colorado’s Flat Tops Wilderness. The massive blaze is wiping out Allison Coil’s precious hunting grounds and the flames have set their sights on the beautiful ranch owned by her boyfriend’s family. Backwoods survivalist Devo finds a body in the blackened forest. The dead man turns out to be a reclusive environmentalist with an unorthodox idea for the battle against global warming. The dead man was no stranger to Allison or her longtime friend, Trudy Heath. Allison, with help from Glenwood Springs reporter Duncan Bloom, burrows into an underground world of haters who harbor a grim view of the world. Suddenly, Trudy goes missing. If Allison can stop the wicked haters, ordinary hell might not be punishment enough for where these particular agents of evil belong.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The harsh and beautiful conditions of the West can spawn independent thinkers or crazy conspiracy theorists, depending on your viewpoint. The thrilling, irresistible fourth in Stevens' series (Trapline, 2014, etc.) has plenty of both."- Kirkus Reviews

"Engrossing."
Mystery Scene Magazine

"Going straight to the fourth book in the series was not seriously problematic, but I would recommend starting at the beginning to better enjoy Allison and Trudy's character development. I am so excited to have found a well-written, suspenseful mystery series set in our own gorgeous backyard."- Steamboat Pilot & Today

"
Lake of Fire swirls into an environmental inferno that reads all too true--Mark Stevens writes like wildfire."- Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire novels, basis for the hit series Longmire

"Stevens crafts a tight thriller with a wonderful sense of the characters and atmosphere of the Colorado mountains - Western Slope readers will no doubt see their friends and neighbors and themselves in the rag-tag team of individualistic high-country sleuths of
Lake of Fire ... Many readers, of course, turn to mystery novels as diversions from fears about things like global warming. Instead, in Lake of Fire, Stevens uses those fears to drive a gripping gumshoe narrative."- The Aspen Times

When I read Mark Stevens’ Trapline, the third in his Allison Coil mystery series, I said, “This is the best one yet.” I’d apply the same to his new one, “Lake of Fire.”
Maybe because I read it after a summer of fire and smoke in Montana, the book really grabbed me. In it, Allison Coil is beset on all sides—by tensions in the family of her increasingly serious boyfriend, Colin; by the thorn-in-the-side presence of a back-to-nature group within her beloved Flat Tops Wilderness, and by a wildfire rampaging through that same wilderness, where Allison makes her living as a hunting guide. Oh, and did I mention that a badly burned body is found within the wilderness around the same time a local activist goes missing? Stevens brings back his lively cast of supporting characters, whose fully realized presence is one of the strengths of this series. In these books, you care what happens to everyone, not just the protagonist. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Mark Stevens spins a good yarn. And one of the things I like about his writing is the way he spends time developing his characters. A good story is important. But I need to care about the characters to really enjoy a crime novel. Sue Grafton's good at that. Craig Johnson's good at it. And so is Mark Stevens. This is a good read.

Lake of Fire is a well-written mystery thriller that takes place in Colorado, starts with a forest fire that Alison Coil is stuck in and has to find her way out, just her and her horse, but the fire continues to rage and it is headed to her boyfriend family's ranch. While they all race to protect the ranch, Alison finds out that a friend of hers body was found in the fire. It is quickly determined that he was murdered. Now Alison and another friend, reporter Duncan Bloom must find out the how and whys of the death of the local activist.

Lake of Fire is the fourth in this series that brings back some previous characters with a mystery taking place during a raging fire that may not have been caused by lightning but by sinister people at work with their own agenda's. Alison is a strong personality who is determined to find out who set the fire and how and why her friend was murdered. With an underground group of anti-government extremist to deal with, will she be able to find out what happened or is she just putting herself and those she loves at risk?

Like I said this is a well-written mystery, engaging and real characters and the writers feel for real events that make this novel an easy and exciting read. I read it in a couple of sittings and thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book!

I received a copy for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Mark Stevens Allison Coil's series is a must read, starting with the first book Antler Dust which introduce's the reader to Allison Coil and her surrounding cast to his latest book Trapline. Mark consistently intertwine's all the characters in each story which will keep the readers engaged from beginning to the end.

I found Lake of Fire to be a lot slower reading than the author's other books. I liked the ending. I guess my biggest complaint would be that Allison Coil is a hunting guide, yet in this book, there was no hunting and no guiding. Maybe that is petty of me.

A fun read for those that like a suspenseful storyline set in the outdoors. I like the characters that have been developed in this series and also the mountainous setting in the Colorado Flat Tops. Wilderness area.

There is a huge wildfire tearing across Colorado. Whole communities are fighting to save their homes and towns. But when one man stumbles on a dead body at the point of origin, all signs point to murder and arson. Then a local environmentalist is missing and his fans are fearful that the body might belong to him. Two couples team up to find out what happened to the man and who started the vicious fire. But murder isn't an issue with the person or persons they are after. So they must tread lightly or they'll be added to the list of dead.

The story started off with a large cast of characters. This was a tad confusing at first. But it quickly sorted out and the story took off. Filled with suspense and drama the entire time, the author lead the reader on a crazy path to the end. The descriptions helped set the reader into the story and I could easily picture the scenes. The characters were real and raw. The book ended with the main part of the plot tied up. But there were several loose ends left hanging. My guess would be for the next book in the series to tackle. I enjoyed the story and would definitely read another book by this author.

I received this book free of charge from Roger Charlie in exchange for my honest review.
