Among the Beasts & Briars Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 630 ratings

Ashley Poston, acclaimed author of Heart of Iron, returns with a dark, lush fairy tale–inspired fantasy for fans of Sara Raasch and Susan Dennard.

Cerys is safe in the Kingdom of Aloriya. Here there are no droughts, disease, or famine, and peace is everlasting. It has been this way for hundreds of years, since the first king made a bargain with the Lady who ruled the forest that borders the kingdom. But as Aloriya prospered, the woods grew dark, cursed, and forbidden.

Cerys knows this all too well: When she was young, she barely escaped as the woods killed her friends and her mother. Now Cerys carries a small bit of the curse—the magic—in her blood, a reminder of the day she lost everything.

As a new queen is crowned, however, things long hidden in the woods descend on the kingdom itself. Cerys is forced on the run, her only companions a small and irritating fox from the royal garden and the magic in her veins. It’s up to her to find the legendary Lady of the Wilds and beg for a way to save her home.

But the road is darker and more dangerous than she knows, and as secrets from the past are uncovered amid the teeth and roots of the forest, it’s going to take everything she has just to survive.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Poston's quiet writing style gives life to an original, spine-tingling fairy tale perfect for middle schoolers who are venturing into the world of YA. The country of Aloriya tells a story about the king's magical crown: a gift from the Lady of the Wilds in the magical city of Voryn to the first king, as eternal protection from the Woods. That story is a lie. Cerys's blood can bring forests to life-a curse leftover from her trip into the Woods, when she and the Princess Anwen were the only survivors. When Anwen's coronation is interrupted by a woodcursed stranger and bone-eaters who are after the crown, Cerys takes it and runs for the Wildwood. With Fox and their new friend Bear to help evade their new enemies, Cerys makes for Voryn. Poston cut her teeth on retellings; this is her first original fairy tale, and it's the perfect balance of heartwarming adventure and creepy monsters. There are unanswered questions that keep the story from being entirely satisfying, but open up the possibility for more original fairy tales. The casual assumption of bisexuality lends the impression that queer relationships are the norm in this world. The majority of the cast is white-Cerys is pale with freckles, Anwen has blonde hair and blue eyes-but there is mention of darker skin tones among peripheral characters. VERDICT Naomi Novik's Uprooted for a younger audience, Poston has written a soft, romantic standalone that should be considered an additional purchase for libraries where fantasy is popular.-Emmy Neal, Lake Forest Lib., ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Dark fantasy reminiscent of classic fairy tales

Dark fantasy reminiscent of classic fairy tales
“You trekked among the beasts and briars, and the deep heart led you all the way to Voryn”Among the Beasts and Briars was a fun, quick read. Overall, the story is reminiscent of a cross between the Disney version of the tale of Beauty and the Beast and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The story follows Cerys, the kind-hearted daughter of the royal gardener and Fox, who was changed into a human by the magic in Cerys’ blood. Everything seems happy and bright at the beginning of the book, but things take a much darker turn when the coronation of Cerys’ best friend Princess Arwen goes horribly wrong. Together, Cerys and Fox have to venture into the woods and attempt to find a cure for the “wood curse” that has taken over the kingdom. I really loved the ending of the story, and how an opening was left for future installments (even though this was designed as a stand-alone novel). The animals are definitely my favorite characters in this novel. From the witty and complex Fox to the bear sidekick, they really gave the story more depth. I liked seeing how Fox struggled to balance the animal instincts with his new human feelings. One of my favorite novels of the year! I hope that Poston continues this story in future books. Any readers who are looking for a fun, whimsical read reminiscent of classic fairy tales will not be disappointed after reading this book.As a side note unrelated to the contents of the book, I thought the art that accompanied pre-orders and library requests was absolutely stunning. Definitely one of my favorite art prints that I’ve gotten with a book. Check out the picture attached to this review! I can’t take any credit for the photo, I took it from the author’s Instagram (it was better quality than the one I took) and I am not the artist.

This is, quite simply, a very sweet fairy tale style story that has a solid story line with hidden identities, life lessons, and facets that do not get fully explored (such as the main character’s parentage) through out and a magic driven happily ever after. All in all it is a fable style story that is meant to stand on its own.

There are criticisms that could be given if it were to be put into more complex categories or compared to deeper series like The Cruel Prince but I don’t think that they are relevant. I think it would be more appropriate to call it a fairy tale with a HEA and stop at that.

It was a great read and I would highly recommend it!

Great book, really quick read. Super interesting concept but Cerys was not the best narrator in the story.
Really good character development and interesting story.

I initially started this up to help me focus and not freak out during one of my many ”fun” anxiety attacks. Soon, though, the only reason my heart raced was this compelling story. The only times I enjoy being dizzy is from kissing or twists and turns in a good book and this was most definitely from the latter. It's almost 3 in the morning now that it's finished, but I got lost in the story (and not the woods, thank goodness)! Once it got rolling, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed that there were a few things I saw coming, and alternatively, a few things going a new direction. I honestly think I'll be reading this again and again.

I believe this book was marketed as YA, but I think it is far better suited to the Middle Grade audience. The story, while enjoyable enough, lacks depth and sophistication. For example, as soon as the fox was introduced I knew who it was - as would most any YA or older reader would. But the author chose to drag out that “mystery” til practically the end of the book, which was silly and a wasted opportunity to move onto more interesting things. There is a lot of action and suspense, but many things are glossed over or not explained at all, which makes the story superficial. But, I believe all of the shortcomings the book poses to a YA and older audience go away for the Middle Grade reader. So, for that group, I’d rate the book 4-5 stars.

This was a quite charming story. Fairy tale like and predictable, but engaging one the less. Two kingdoms, a wild forest, magic, love family, duty. I was only surprised that a second Queen wasn't revealed, I thought I had that right. Good book, quick read, solid 4 stars

I had bought this book and it sat in my shelf for a year. So happy I picked this up! It had the romance and fantasy roles I really love and it definitely has the chosen one vibes. This book was such an incredible read, I enjoyed the journey following Cerys and Fox. I loved how we learned more about the ancients, Aloriya’s role, and the Lady of the Wild. Vala is best girl.

From a former maiden Fox:

This was a very good fairy tale, although I think the author was inspired by one of the stories that disney has told before.

With that being said, Ashley Poston did a terrific job of using the same themes and writing them into an engaging tale that just leaves you with all the good feelings. Definitely a story to read while everything outside is lush and green and the birds are singing

5.0 out of 5 stars Une histoire que j'ai beaucoup aimé
Reviewed in France on February 1, 2024
