The Call: A Psychic Paranormal Romantic Comedy (Building the Circle Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 4,015 ratings

Imagine being splattered with mud, drenched by a downpour, and landing in the arms of unexpected love.

Bold, decisive, and determined, Matilda Benton is not your typical consultant. As a self-employed strategist in the liquor industry, she lands a career-defining opportunity with the opulent Trellis Industries. Tasked with building a new beer brand, she has everything meticulously planned—until she doesn't. Drenched, muddy, and babbling about a mishap, Matilda arrives late to a crucial meeting, standing soaked in the doorway of Jacob Trellis's office.

Expecting a meltdown, Jacob is taken aback when not a single tear mars Matilda's determined face. Instead of crumbling under pressure, she challenges him at pool—his own sanctuary—and wins, not just the game but a special place in the hearts of the Trellis clan. As Matilda and Jacob navigate a chaotic path to love, they encounter a quirky mix of raucous family dynamics, uproariously inappropriate moments, and psychic twists.

"The Call" is the first book in a paranormal romance series that strikes the perfect balance between humor and heart. With characters who are a little psychic, a bit empathic, and entirely endearing, Maggie M. Lily invites you to fall in love with the Trellis family. Expect laugh-out-loud scenes, swoon-worthy romance, and a smattering of wild surprises.

Recommended for readers 18+ due to strong language and steamy scenes, "The Call" promises to be an unforgettable ride. Grab your copy today and join Matilda and Jacob as they discover that love, like life, is best enjoyed with a sense of humor and a touch of the paranormal.

All the best things in a book. A realistic romance, wonderful banter, family dynamics, and paranormal that isn't so far out there. Real, normal believable characters you will relate to and fall in love with. You will smile, cry, maybe laugh. Well written. Hats off to the author. Now off to book number 2, thankful it's Saturday because I am positive I won't want to put the next book down either.

The writing style is unusual. The PNR aspects unfold in an odd way. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but it was very different from your typical romance.

Ok, I only have three gripes with this book.

1. I forgot it was a paranormal story until midbook, even then, it seemed to be an under thought as the character who is psychic wasn’t the focal point of the story.

2. I did not realize the main female had a disability until midway either. I don’t know if I missed it but it seemed like boom! She’s actually handicapped.

3. The length. For the writing which was really good, the I had to come back to this book 3 times to finish it. It seemed to drag on and was a slow read.

That’s all my faults with it. It’s well written minus my gripes. I love the family, the dialogue, just seemed a little long winded.

But it’s still almost a 5 star book in my opinion. I can’t wait to read the rest.

I really enjoyed this book. I am trying to figure out things that are playing out with the book. Really hoping book 2 will give more insight into those questions

Matty is on her own and trying to prove she has what it takes to make it in life and in business. She is on her way to the most important meeting of her life when all hell breaks loose. She is caught out in a storm, then basically pushed into a puddle and then her leather tote bag holding her laptop gets run over. She looks like a drowned cat when she gets to said meeting.

Jake Trellis is upset when his appointment is late. Then suddenly there she is. Not at all what he thought he was expecting. Suddenly his heart went out to this woman. She was tiny and was an absolute mess. He asked if he could do anything for her, and she insisted they continue with the meeting. After he finally talked her into going to the restroom to clean up, Matty knew it was over. Then he challenged her to play pool with him when she came back, and she actually trounced all over him. When she left, Jacob called his family and said she is amazing.

The next morning Matty got the contract of her dreams. She contacted her best friends and they all screamed in excitement. Things were going to change for the better.

Matty meets the rest of the family and is pulled into a friendship with Jake's brother Sam. He seems to be able to reach a part of Matty that no one has ever been able to. Matty gets feelings for Jake and is so drawn to him, but he has a witch of a girlfriend named Bella.

So much happens in this story. So uplifting at parts then devastating in others. I love the Trellis family and how they pull Matty into their fold. They are very protective of her and hate what Matty's mother does to her well being.

Now to learn more about this incredible family and the powers they have. Enjoy

I almost gave this book a 3 but most of this book was very good. Matilda started out with a bang but from there she went into weak, suffering victim. I might be a little harsh on her but where was her fire for the last 3/4 of the story?
Jake, on the other hand, knew exactly what he wanted and for the most part was perfect. I read this in 2 days so that should tell you how interesting it is.
Now for my cons, very rare for me. The author went way overboard on the bully treatment in Mattie' s life. I can understand some bullying from kid's in growing up but there were some harsh people in her past. Worst of all, her mom. I have a hard time believing even the worst mother would go beyond telling their child anything worse than, " I'm not cut out for taking care of you. " The level of abuse her mom doled out even after she was grown was a bit over the top.
Then there was Bella, the super model. The nastiest supermodel wouldn't be that cruel in front of other people if for no other reason than to further their career. And finally, the Ad exec that was beyond sexist would never in his career speak , and continue to speak after being warned, speak to Mattie in such an over the top sexist way and even put his hands on her in front of 10 people anywhere in this country. Nor would all of these brothers of such high caliber let it happen.
I am looking forward to the next book with hope that there will be no over the top, I'll just say it, unbelievable theatrics in the next. This author has too much talent for this.
I have never written this much negative review before and I'm only spending the time on it because she does have what it takes to do better.
By the way, the Trellis family is too good to be true, but I will allow this in my ideal romance books!!!

This was heavy on romantic comedy with some real laugh out loud moments. Paranormal aspect was light, especially in the beginning but is wrapped up in a shroud of mystery as it appears it will continue through the series. It'll be an interesting side to unravel among the laughter of this family.

So the blurb for this book looked like it might be a fun read. It's all misdirection, the shrew is not a small mole like creature, the psychic brothers really have no clue, the dog doesn't slobber that much and that other thing is gifted, not Gifted. That said, this book was brilliant. I loved the characters, they were hilarious, but also felt real. The storyline was great, I read a lot of PNR and this was unlike antthing I've read before. It kept me hooked to the very end. I'm so excited to read the next book in the series
