Combining mediums
Experiment with combining all your materials. I love the loose, transparent look of watercolor combined with the intentional strokes of colored pencil adding texture.
Add shadows
When sketching everyday objects, add a little shadow under the objects in a pale gray or blue to ground them to the page. This works with any medium.
Color outside the lines
I love the look of an off-register image, where the outline and the color don’t line up exactly. Using this technique relieves the pressure of perfection and adds a charming looseness to your drawings.
15 Minutes
When you are short on time, focus on a vignette that interests you and capture it using blocks of color and simple line work.
Enhanced Blind Contour
This exercise combines the quick-and-loose approach of blind contour drawing with some more deliberate embellishment with color. It is a great approach for capturing the details of your surroundings when you have a bit more time.
Restrict your palette
Sometimes limiting your color scheme can create a more striking image than using realistic colors. Try working in black and white only, then add a single accent color to enhance your image.

About the author

Maker extraordinaire, Courtney is an artist, author, collaborator and shop owner. Her books, Playing with Image Transfers, Washi Tape 101, Playing With Surface Design and Make Art Where You Are have been translated into Italian, French, German, Spanish and Chinese. Courtney teaches workshops all over the country and online at Creativebug.com where she is the Editor-In-Chief. Her work has been featured on Oh Happy Day, Design Sponge, the SF Chronicle, Instagram, The Jealous Curator and BuzzFeed among others. She makes something everyday and can be found on instagram as @ccerruti
Courtney sees books as objects to be read and re-purposed, candy wrappers as paper flower petals, toilet paper tubes as a menagerie of animals. She sees the potential in the discarded, history in the mundane and art in the everyday. She saves everything, makes anything and teaches from a place of passion and authenticity. Courtney believes everyone is creative and she’d rather spend an evening drinking tea and painting than doing anything else (except maybe scavenging treasures abroad).

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2022I buy lot's of instructional painting and drawing books like many of you I'm sure. This time I bought "Make Art Where You Are" and quite honestly when I first got it, it seemed like not much. It does include a sketchbook, which yes, that's nice but I have a million of those. The book, or "guidebook" is small...almost like a bound pamphlet, HOWEVER, I got a lot out of that little book! After the supplies and color mixing (which all my books include) there was helpful information! So much so, I'm going to bring this guidebook along when I travel for the ideas! I loved the "dynamic layouts" section as well as "simple stroke landscapes" and "color blocked cityscapes." Like I said, this book has some great ideas and is definitely a "KEEPER!'
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020This book was well worth the price for me as someone who wants to keep a traveling journal but just can't seem to do it. When I'm there, how do I know what to draw first? where do I start? Her advice on preparing makes it simple to put together an easy to carry kit, even if you want to use color. So, I'm going to work my way through her suggestions for actually drawing on the spot with pencil or pen first. Pick an object and just draw it, blind contour or make a block of marks to express the energy you feel. The trick I was missing was to make it simple, not perfect. Experiment! It's art!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2020The only bad part about this book is how short it is! It contains excellent tips for intermediate or advanced-beginner artists. I'm a mixed media artist who prefers watercolours, so there was a lot in here for me, but she also brings coloured pencils and water-soluble markers into the conversation. This is not a step-by-step painting instruction book. It's a jumping-off point to stimulate your creativity, the way you see your surroundings, and give you lots of ideas about different ways to fill your sketchbook. Definitely the perfect book for me right now, and highly recommended for anyone who is feeling a little stale towards their sketchbooks.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2023The book is a great little book for those who struggle or are beginning with watercolor. But use the sketch book only as a note book don’t even bother to paint on it . The publisher really did a disservice to the author and buyers buy using such crap paper. For the The book. It would make people give up. The number one rule in painting with watercolors is spend your money on the paper.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023I really enjoy this book and refer to it often when I will be traveling. Filled with great ideas to inspire you
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2021I am familiar with the author, who is one of my absolute favorite Creativebug instructors. Her non-perfectionist approach greatly resonates with me. As a novice artist, I find this style, reminiscent of the Impressionist movement, really liberating. It's a small book, but it makes it a great travel companion.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2021A wonderful creative practice book. Highly recommend for newbies and more advanced artists alike. Would make a great gift for the creative person in your life!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2022I really enjoyed these simple to employ techniques. They are presented in a straightforward fashion with perfect examples to easily follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klein, aber fein

2.0 out of 5 stars Its not what I expected
I Think is a so incompleto book :/ the explanations are something you can find anywhere else, a blog in a more complete book, a friend who have a little experience with watercolors
