“Capitalizing on the talents of a multigenerational work force is the key to future business success. Sherri Elliott recognizes that and gives sound advice.” —Leslie Elliott, president, Toni & Guy, USA

For the first time in history, the American workforce is comprised of four distinct generations—Traditionalists, Boomers, Xers, and Millennials. Additionally, today’s workforce brings with it a new set of challenges and opportunities: the looming labor shortage, sagging productivity, knowledge transfer, the language barrier, and stereotypes.

Ties to Tattoos offers innovative ways to recruit, reward, manage, motivate, train, and retain, all within a generationally diverse workplace. Understanding generational issues is one of the best new tools for resolving conflicts and boosting productivity. Ties to Tattoos provides keys for understanding these issues and strategies to leverage multigenerational differences in ways that make companies stronger. The creative people strategies described throughout the book set the bar for companies in the coming decade with the sustainable competitive advantage engaged and committed employees.

Ties to Tattoos provides thought-provoking realities you need to consider. It affords actionable ideas on how to gain better understanding of what drives today’s workforce to deliver exceptional results.” —George Killebrew, Senior Vice-President of Corporate Sponsorships, Dallas Mavericks

“Provides very helpful insights into the nature and reasons for these generational differences and offers strategies for leveraging them to an organization’s advantage. While the commonalities between generations may be much greater than the differences, knowing how to recognize and manage the differences can make the leadership challenge less daunting.” —Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, past president, Society for Human Resource Management

As an HR professional, I have read my share of business and management improvement books; I'm not a big fan of theory-only advice and my time is very limited. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by Sherri Elliott's, Ties to Tattoos, an easy read and an action-geared one at that! I have recommended it (and given copies) to my peers and clients--managers who deal with the generational differences every day and struggle to develop effective relationships with their staff.

Indeed, I have found Sherri's recommendations and insights useful in my family life as well, raising two millenials who IM faster than they breathe. It is refreshing to have clarity on this issue of who, what, when and why we are experiencing generational conflicts and to have practical solutions to implement for improved communication. I highly recommend this book--it makes a great gift to many people in our work and personal lives.

This book may be useful to people who have never explored generational differences, and are just looking to get a taste of the topic.

It commented on many easily observable differences and motivators of the different generations. This book felt very repetitive and I felt that I read the same content over and over. I appreciated the examples of what real tactics companies are using to attract an retain employees, but they were skimmed over very lightly (1-2 sentences). Neither the desires of the employees or the examples used to illustrate innovative retention techniques were explored in sufficient depth to be useful.

As an older millenial/generation Y, I felt that my generation (more than the others in the book) was mis-represented on several occasions and that the author wasn't truly in touch with my generation. As an example, there is a chart listing Generational Values that includes "heroes" - celebrities that are admired. The examples given do not reflect the "heroes" of the millenials I know. The suggestions given for millenials focused on technology and paid insufficient attention to other areas of importance.

This is a great book for anyone interested in better understanding the different generations. It was incredibly insightful, and it gave me a whole new perspective. I've already started leveraging what I've learned with clients, associates and even in my business development efforts.

Sherri's descriptions are very thorough and easy to understand, and I thought she did a great job of presenting the information. It's a must-read for anyone who really wants to understand what makes the different generations "tick."

I deliver leadership development and employee engagement workshops throughout North and South America and frequently hear my participants anguish over how to deal with the various generations in their workplace. They grapple with "how do I incent the younger generations to stay and really engage?" They wonder, "how do I best leverage the knowledge of the baby boomers?" These questions and many more come up during the course of a workshop - and I point them to this book!
