Murder on Charles Street (Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 823 ratings

Lady Katherine’s happiness at her newfound independence is shattered by the death of her elderly neighbor, Doctor Gammon. The doctor had become a trusted friend and had confided in Katherine that something about a former patient’s case had been bothering him.

Was it any coincidence he’d ended up dead the very next day?

Katherine doesn’t think so, especially when she discovers the case files he’d been scrutinizing the night before his death seem to have disappeared.

But with her maid Harriett focusing on the vile concoctions she makes for supper, her detecting partner Pru too wrapped up in her fiancee and upcoming wedding plans and her Bow Street runner friend Lyle embroiled in the official investigation, Lady Katherine has only one friend who seems interested in investigating - Captain Wayland.

Her father would have a fit if he knew Katherine was conferring on a case with the handsome Captain, but Lady Katherine will stop at nothing to bring her friend’s killer to justice.

When the case takes a disturbing turn, even Wayland can’t help, and Lady Katherine has only her wits - and her pug Emma - to relay on in order to prevent becoming the next victim.

3.5 stars rounded up.
This is another Lady Katherine Regency Mystery. Lady Katherine has very recently moved into her own place with her lady's maid, Harriet who is now also housekeeper and cook (much to Katherine's dismay). She's become friends with an elderly neighbor, Doctor Gammon, who's recently retired. When his part-time housekeeper finds him dead the day after Katherine had consulted with him about her dog Emma, Katherine suspects foul play.

Lady Katherine's the only one who suspects Doctor Gammon's death is anything but from natural causes. None of her friends believe her theory, and even Bow Street has declared his death as "natural causes". Katherine believes it has something to do with an old case that was bothering the doctor, now if she could get her hands on the files, but how's she going to get into the house?

The gang is altogether, but not necessarily to solve a murder--Pru and Lord Annandale are planning their upcoming wedding, Bow Street runner Lyle, is officially a part of the investigation so he can't help, that leaves Captain Wayland. Katherine still doesn't understand why her father dislikes the man, but she can't let him find out they're working together. After Katherine injures her ankle and can't walk, the gang all chip in to help solve the case.

This wasn't one of my favorites of Lady Katherine's adventures, although I enjoy that she's protesting less about Captain Wayland--I think she's finally admitting to herself she's beginning to feel something for the man. I'm very curious to find out why her father dislikes him and no clues have been given about that. This one didn't hold my interest like these books usually do, although the murderer did surprise me, and the reason behind it. Katherine really needs to have a frank talk with Harriet about her lack of cooking skills, then hire a cook before she starves to death.

An interesting mystery and a Lady who cannot test until she has solved the case. A charming fast of characters keep you involved and keep you reading to the last page.

The series is about Lady Katherine and her friends who solve crimes. I read the other four books in the series. Basically it’s an enjoyable series. The main group of characters are likable. But this entry has you shaking your head in wonder. I would have thought that by this book she would have matured somewhat and gotten some common sense. She’s has her own house now but she has very little furniture. Not that she doesn’t have money to furnish the house but she just hasn’t gotten around to it. She has no staff other than her maid who has to do everything. I find it incredible that for someone who can solve crimes, she can’t figure out that she needs more furniture so her guests can sit properly and that her maid is overworked. The mystery itself was so so. I will read the next entry in the series but I am hoping that the authors will make Lady Katherine more mature and sensible.

Enjoyable regency whodunit with plenty of opportunities to investigate from the chair (Lady Katherine's ankle being sprained). I wonder if Lyle will ever meet someone since Harriet seems to be falling against her will for Pru's fiance's manservant. Both Lyle and he are interesting Characters. Spell correct keeps capitalizing that, so I'll leave it as such. I would have liked to see more of Miss Ball falling for Dr. Gammon's son. This series is addictive for me.

While preparing to write my review I looked at what other’s said. Lady Katherine after moving to Charles Street has tried to establish her friendship with her neighbors, Dr. Stuart Gammon, and her nosey neighbor. Lady Katherine is trying very hard to establish herself as an investigator, just like her father, The Earl of Dorchester. However, with the move for more independence to Charles Street, her maid Harriet is trying very hard to run a household all by herself, her cooking leaves at lot to be desired and why Lady Katherine can’t sit down with her maid/friend and talk about it is left out of the book, leaving the reader to feel sorry for Harriet. Emma her pug is a total handful and now has taken to eating scraps of food that Lady Katherine is feeding her under the table, unknown to Harriet. I totally understand Lady Katherine’s’ wanting independence, but she needs to remember all who have stood by her, best friend Prudence Burwick, Lord Annandale, McTavish and Captain Dorian Wayland. Dr. Gammon took care of Emma the night before for eating pages of Lady Katherine’s notes. The following morning Harriet and Lady Katherine were alarmed to hear, Mrs. Campbell, (Dr. Gammon’s housekeeper) screaming of his death. Lady Katherine felt after her conversation the night before that Dr. Gammon did not die of natural causes but was murder, now to prove it. I really like this series and know that with two great authors, Lady Katherine by the next book will feel more comfortable and realize that Harriet is more than her maid, she is a trusted friend. The next book should move closer to Pru and Lord Annandale’s wedding, which Harriet is not looking forward to.

Lady Katherine is an independent woman before it became "popular". This is a very good series that I recommend reading from Book 1. The author clearly depicts each event so that you actually envision being part of the scenery.
Keeps you guessing as to who the actual murderer is and ultimately leading up to an exciting ending.
Can't wait for book 6!

I enjoyed and love Lady Katherine book series. Her incites on her detective work is inspirational. Her love matches are exciting. Especially, her own situation with the captain. They both act like they are scare to pursue their own feelings. Maybe some excitement needs to happen between Harriet and McTavish and others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed.

I have now read all the series so far and while it is a good storyline Lady K has become more immature and selfish. Only she is right while all her detective friends can't be. I was really feeling for Harriet in this story - chased by butlers and dismissive by her mistress. And Lady K can get a new cook without hurting her feelings - "it will lessen your workload".
After 5 cases now she still has not learnt that the real villian has never been on the suspect list but has been exposed in the last few pages.
In Regency England no-one spoke American, although unfortunately it is creeping into English nowdays. The worst example being that non-word "gotten" that is used throughout the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's odd..

All the usual problems abound.. but this is slow, drawn out and a bit boring..

Katherine is the only one convinced that it's murder when her elderly neighbour Dr Gammon is found dead by his housekeeper. No one wants to listen, even Lyle doesn't particularly seem bothered despite there being too many issues with the death.

Pru, Harriet, Annandale, Wayland and MacTavish all offer to help especially after Katherine injures herself.

Lots of totally inappropriate behaviour with single male visitors, Pru and Annandale riding around unaccompanied, Katherine receiving all night visits from assorted groups of her friends.

Harriet is allegedly single handedly running the house, cleaning, washing, cooking, laundry the lot and still has time to be ladies maid to Katherine who is oblivious to the workload Harriet now has other than to moan about the food in her head.. nope.. Katherine has always been portrayed as well aware and a considerate employer who notices everything.. right down to her maid's hands and who buys her hand cream, Katherine tells us over and over how she's so observant.. no one is more observant than her.. yet she's oblivious to Harriet and the long running Wayland situation.. just get on with it.. it's lost all credibility
