2019 recipient of the Derrick Murdoch award from the Crime Writers of Canada

As the mountain town of Trafalgar, British Columbia, shakes off a long hard winter, famous photographer Rudolph Steiner arrives to do a feature on mountain tourism. Steiner is accompanied by his assistant and his sexy young wife, but he has another reason for the visit: to re-connect with the woman who left him 25 years ago to marry another man. That woman was a young, beautiful, naïve, internationally known super-model. Today Eliza Winters is no longer young, and definitely not naïve, but she is still beautiful and married to Trafalgar City Police Sergeant John Winters.

When Steiner is found shot in his luxury hotel room, suspicion falls upon Eliza who had, inexplicably, visited Steiner there. John Winters is forced into the most difficult of dilemmas: loyalty to his job or to his wife. As the RCMP dig into secrets hidden by both Steiner and Eliza, Winters slowly comes to realize that he doesn't know his beloved wife as well as he thought.

Meanwhile, Constable Molly Smith has her own troubles. A series of break-ins has the peaceful town in an uproar, her overprotective boyfriend from the Royal Mounted Police is fighting with her colleagues, and a vengeful stalker is watching her every move. When tragedy strikes at the heart of her own family, Molly can't even turn to her mother for help.

From Booklist

A murder turns personal for Sergeant John Winters, Constable Molly Smith’s boss on the Trafalgar, British Columbia, police force. It turns out that the victim, a has-been fashion photographer, has a decades-old connection to Winters’ wife, Eliza, a former model. Winters, his trust in his wife shaken, is taken off the case as Eliza becomes a suspect, ahead of both the victim’s young and scarcely grief-striken widow and his ambitious assistant. Working with Winters on a series of home burglaries, Smith suffers the tensions of being a woman in a man’s world; meanwhile, she deals with her father’s health problems, her love for Mounty Adam Tocek, and the presence of a stalker, parolee Charlie Bassing, who blames Smith for all his problems. An unusual protagonist for a crime series, Molly Smith is rarely the primary character when it comes to breaking cases (at least not through four outings), but her life outside work is given full sway. And yet, it is Molly who elevates this series from standard procedural fare into something quite memorable. --Michele Leber

Review

Praise for Vicki Delany's Winter of Secrets, third book in her ''Constable Molly Smith'' series:
''Delaney glides between scenes with ease. She uses a bare-bones style, without literary flash, to achieve artistry as sturdy and restrained as a Shaker chair. Warmth and menace, past and present, are nicely balanced, with a denouement that's equally plausible and startling. This confident performance is sure to win new fans to the series.'' --

I am loving this series and reading one after the other. This is a tense story as it involves the murder of a man known by John Winters' wife. There are completely unlikeable characters who are written with such realism that I was practically booing them. Like the other books in the series, I was on the edge of my seat and I did not guess who done it until the surprise ending. I love the twists and turns in the story and the beautiful descriptions of this spectacular part of Canada. On to the next book :-)

This is my third series I've read from author Vicki Delany. She makes the story fun. She gives clues and it is always a challenge to see if you picked up on the right ones.

This is the fourth book in the Molly Smith Mystery series and winter is transitioning into spring in Trafalgar, B.C. Lots of things are happening in this book and I found myself pulling for several characters. Ms. Delany is an excellent writer who knows how to engage her readers and keep them on the edge of their seats. Her way of describing settings and characters is so unique, but at the same time, totally realistic. The reader knows what she's saying, but it's said so beautifully. I really enjoyed this book and have already started the next in the series.

A good read and as the series goes forward they seem to be getting a bit better. Worth the read.

The Molly Smith series is damn good. Setting is interior British Columbia and main character is younger female cop in a fairly small ski resort town. Very real world psychologically and otherwise. Tough issues are tackled. Vicki Delany is a Canadian writer who now has several series. I like this one the best.

Another terrific book from Vick Delany in the Molly Smith series. Again, Molly - or Moonlight, as her hippie mother called her - is just as engaging in this as the previous one,

The characters are well drawn, dialogue excellent and I enjoyed it immensely.
