New York Times-Bestselling Author: A trip to Sedona, a disappearing heiress, and a reappearing ex-husband add up to trouble for a straitlaced accountant…

No one craves order more than bean counter Crystal Goldstein. A partner at a New York accounting firm, doting daughter to her aging father, and loyal girlfriend to the equally workaholic Steven, she has her life completely under control. But when she learns that Steven’s been cheating on her with his ex-wife, that her gruff father has spent years yearning for a brother she never knew she had, and that her job may be in jeopardy, she’s brought up really short.

Crystal's best friend—a New Age junkie—convinces her that her aura needs cleansing and her chakras need balancing. With nothing to lose, Crystal takes a long-overdue vacation in mystical, metaphysical Sedona, Arizona. Among the resort’s guests: Amanda Wells Reid, international jet-setter, consummate party-goer, and darling of the society columnists, along with her personal assistant, personal chef, personal trainer, and personal publicist. And their tour driver is none other than the totally irresistible, totally irresponsible husband Crystal tossed out so many years ago.

It doesn’t take a psychic to know that the mix of a reappearing ex-husband whose appeal has only ripened and a millionaire heiress who suddenly vanishes is going to add up to some pretty eye-opening—and mind-expanding—doings….

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

More frivolous, flaky fun (Princess Charming, p. 160, etc.) from Heller, who's quickly becoming the master of the slick urban modern woman's getaway romance . Crystal Goldstein is a Manhattan stereotype: a working woman (in this case, a CPA) of a certain age (about 40) who has no time for anything resembling a life. Her first marriage--to the charming but lazy Terry Hollenbeck--lasted only a matter of months. Now, when she learns that the man she's been dating for years, an unbelievably boring and uptight attorney, has been cheating on her with the ex-wife he's married and divorced twice, Crystal takes the news as a wake-up call. With the help of her New Age-y but loving friend and secretary Rona Wishnick, Crystal (who, in spite of her name, is as pragmatic as you can get) decides to take a vacation at a resort called Tranquility in Sedona, Arizona. Once there, she signs up for the apparently obligatory (according to Rona) Sacred Earth Jeep Tour, a weeklong drive through Sedona's spiritual sites that turns out to offer plenty of forced interaction with the driver/tour guide and the other six tour groupies. To Crystal's shock, she immediately recognizes the driver she's been assigned to--it's Terry, of course, looking better than ever at 43. Worse yet, several calls from Rona reveal that attorney Steven is hot on her trail, vowing to give up his ex-ex-wife forever if Crystal will marry him. Crystal's touring companions, meanwhile, aren't much help: Amanda Reid is a socialite with an attitude as big as her bank account, and the rest of the group includes her entourage (cook, p.r. agent, physical therapist, personal assistant) and a reporter doing a story on Amanda's writer husband, who's penned his first book in decades. What ultimately happens in the desert comes as a surprise only to Crystal. A modern spin on a good old-fashioned Cinderella story. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Hello! My most recent novel, THREE BLONDE MICE, is a spinoff of PRINCESS CHARMING, my comedy about three best friends who spend a week on a Caribbean cruise with plenty of romance, suspense and lots of laughs. THREE BLONDE MICE finds them on a "haycation" at a farm resort in CT, milking a cow, making cheese and taking cooking classes with a famous chef who's marked for murder. It's the first book in my planned "Three Blonde Mice" series of comedies in which the three friends will take trips together - trips that will inevitably involve passion, both romantic and sinister!

On the nonfiction side, I continue to travel the country talking about caregiving and my book YOU'D BETTER NOT DIE OR I'LL KILL YOU: A Caregiver's Survival Guide to Keeping You in Good Health and Good Spirits. It's what I affectionately called "Nora Ephron's I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK meets Heidi Murkoff's WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING" in that it's a combo of my personal, often humorous essays about caring for my husband (Crohn's disease) and my mother (dementia), interviews with other caregivers (of children, spouses and aging parents), and advice from a wide range of experts. With over 65 million caregivers in this country, I thought it was time for a book that will entertain caregivers even as it provides lots of ideas for self-care. Check it out for yourself or someone you care about.

I love hearing from readers, so please get in touch at www.janeheller.com.

This one was a little slow at first, but well worth the read. Ms. Heller's descriptions of Sedona, AZ have me wanting to plan a vacation trip there next year! The book is a little predictable compared to others that I have read, but is still light & funny and will bring a smile to your face.

    CRYSTAL CLEAR by Jane Heller

    Rating 3.5/5 stars

Crystal Goldstein is an accountant living in Manhattan. Her life is very orderly and quiet. She's been seeing a boyfriend for a number of years but realizes it's going nowhere. She had been content, but now feels that she's wasting her time with him. When she discovers he's been cheating on her with his ex-wife, she's just about had it. Her best friend, Rona, coaxes Crystal to make a visit to Sedona for a vacation and also to help find some direction in her life.

So, Crystal makes the trip to Sedona, checks into a very posh resort, and signs up for a 5 day "Sacred Earth" jeep tour, something she would never have done before this idea of even GOING to Sedona came up. This could be a sign, but the leader of the tour was none other than Crystal's ex-husband from years ago, a man she never thought she'd set eyes on again. Terry looked even better than when she last saw him, but as she got to watch him in action, she realized he'd also grown up. He was no longer that immature young man she had been married to, a man that was like a boy who had no real direction in life. Crystal had always had more discipline, knew how she wanted to lead her life, and Terry was holding her back. She couldn't stay with a husband who had no goals.

But now here they were, together again on a jeep tour. Terry was actually the owner of the company who ran the tour, and he looked happy. The two still felt sparks, but Crystal learns that he's got a woman in his life, not really sure if it is his wife or girlfriend, but she is disappointed that he's not free to carry on where they had left off.

It is during this jeep tour that one of the customers of the tour disappears. Amanda Wells Reid, an international jet setter who for some reason or another was on this tour (along with her entourage), has been kidnapped and now the company and the town of Sedona are the hot spot for the media. This is big news. Suspects include Amanda's husband, all of her entourage, as well as Terry's business partner and friend Will Singleton, a Lakota Sioux who was the last person to be seen with Amanda.

In the meantime, Crystal's boyfriend (ex-boyfriend?) wants to see her, and now she's not so sure she wants him back in her life. She's rediscovered Terry, and likes what she sees.

I've read a few books by Jane Heller, and this one is probably the oldest of them all. I didn't quite like it as much as the others; the humor seemed a bit forced and the characters were all rather stereotypical on top of that. The story was enjoyable however, and I had fun trying to figure out who actually was guilty of kidnapping Amanda.

Crystal was the main character, but I think her romance story between Terry and her troubles with the boyfriend back home for me held the same interest as the story of Amanda's kidnapping. I didn't like nor dislike Crystal's character; I just didn't really care about her. It wasn't a bad book, but I think if I hadn't read this book at all, it wouldn't have been a missed opportunity. This is the type of book one would take on an airplane to read - light humor, a beach read. I give it a mild recommendation.

Jane Heller is great at combining humor and romance with an interesting story. If you want a “feel good” when you are done reading, this book is for you.

What a fun book! Some of the characters or should I say caractures are a riot, like "Amanda", a wealthy, arrogant and-incredibly "stupid" woman who just doesn't "get it."
If you love "Sedona, Arizona"-or would like to fall in love read this book. You will get a sense of how beautiful and "far-out" it is-A really unique place to visit!

My two best friends and I all read Crystal Clear before our trip to Sedona. It was better than any travel guide I've every read. We ate at L'Auberge, took the jeep tour, had lunch in Jerome, and basically did everything that Crystal did, except solve a kidnapping. Although none of us would have minded being kidnapped and kept in Sedona for a little longer. A fun read.

This book was about as predictable as romances go. The professional business woman, Crystal, goes out to the dessert to think about her job, which is in crisis, her lame boyfriend, and to try to relieve herself from the stress which is caused by her lifestyle. While out there she goes on a jeep tour and the driver just happens to be her ex-husband. Then one of the passengers on the jeep disappears, so Crystal has to team up with her ex. They solve the mystery and fall back in love. Each page is more predictable than the rest, and I suggest not reading this book, because of that. Unless, of course, you like boring, predictable, romances.

The story hooks you in from the first paragraph. So many of us can relate to living the grind. Having a relationship without true love is also a common experience. I found myself saddened when Crystal decides to return to her unhappy life in New York. I cheered for as she rode back into Terry's life again. An experience we all yearn for and not many find in a lifetime.
