Moonshine Kindle Edition
No one knows why the lights went out. One minute there was Instagram and ice cream and the next, nothing. Black. Darkness absolute.
There was power rumored in the east, settlements with wind energy that were still thriving amidst the chaos. I fled the west coast with a small group, chasing a sliver of hope. That hope was quickly snuffed out, leaving me all alone in the world.
Until I wasn’t alone. They found me deep in the forest. I ran and they gave chase. Death was on my heel when I landed at the feet of an unwilling savior. With a cabin, a farm, and a lifetime of survival skills, Joshua was the perfect companion for the apocalypse. If only he wanted companionship.
It’s hard to earn his trust and even harder to keep it. At a glance, he seems to be nothing more than an off-kilter backwoods prepper with a grudge against humanity. The longer I look, the more I begin to see the man behind the harsh words and unkempt beard.
As reluctant as he is to keep me, Joshua just might need me. After all, no one survives the end of the world alone.
Moonshine is a slow burn new adult romance in a dystopian/end of the world setting. It is not a closed-door romance, but it is not considered a spicy book. Sensitive readers should be mindful of mature themes and check the trigger warnings before Chapter 1.

From the Inside Flap
A woman alone in the end of the world. A survivor with nothing left to live for. A town clinging to their humanity in a world forever changed by darkness.
Nothing makes people more dangerous than desperation. It was one of the very first lessons Joshua's father imparted on him. That lesson was the reason he was still alive. The blackout changed people, broke them down and remade them into the most base version of themselves.
Joshua didn't break. He was already built that way.
Even a man who was crafted to survive wasn't prepared for the guilt that came calling in the middle of the night. Even a man who did what it took to stay alive wasn't exempt from God's judgement.
Redemption comes in unexpected packages. When Joshua finds a woman running from hell, half-starved and on death's door, he accepts what he has to do. Liv thinks he's her salvation. Joshua is pretty damn sure she's his.
When the known world comes crumbling down, only the strongest make it out of the rubble. Liv isn't sure she fits into that category. Maybe she was just standing in the right place at the right time and all that crumbling stuff missed her. Otherwise, she wasn't entirely sure how she made it as far as she had.
Were you making it if you were alone, starved and barely sure of which direction you were going?
The answer to that question comes in the form of a burly, bearded, brutish man that Liv is half sure is an axe murderer.
Joshua is a survivor, born and bred. He introduces her to the world from his eyes, a place that hasn't crumbled so much as changed, reshaped to fit back into the intricate cycle nature intended.
But nothing is quite so simple.
On the outskirts of a town, Liv and Joshua are never truly alone. Desperate people cling to survival in Rockham Falls, a stronghold protecting them from humanity's worst. Desperation makes people dangerous, though, and nothing in Rockham Falls is as safe as it seems.
Shelter can't offer protection when the enemy is already inside. Safety is an illusion when every man lives for himself.
Despite it all, Liv still has hope. They need each other. It's the only way forward.
No one can survive the end of the world alone.

About the author

Kat has always believed in magic, if only the kind that flies from fingertip to keyboard and then onto paper, enchanting a reader and giving them a brief respite from the mundane world. She made her debut in 2019 with her first novel, Hunter’s Moon. Like all of Kat’s favorite stories, her Urban Fantasy is packed with adventure, sprinkled with equal shares of humor and heartbreak, and finished with a healthy dose of romance.
When she’s not writing Kat is a full blown homesteading, crunchy-as-all-get-out granola mama, raising a baby, dogs, and any plant she can grow in the cloudy Pacific Northwest.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2025I have read several apocalyptic books. This one really got under my skin. If you are looking for a light fluffy read to make you believe all humanity is good, you got the wrong book. However, if you are looking for a read that looks the ugliest humanity has to offer in the face while still showing you that there is always hope and it can be found, you grabbed the exact right book!! This author does an outstanding job of being realistic and still clinging to that kernel of happy that can be found if you look hard enough. Such a great read! You won't regret reading this.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2020‘Moonshine’ is the sophomore novel of indie novelist Kat Bostick. After being introduced to her with her debut release, 'Hunter's Moon', which I absolutely adored for her creative storytelling, innovative characters and ability to set an immerseful tone and mood with the writing style, I was excited when it was announced that her follow-up would be a post-apocalyptic romance piece. And as expected, the author did another remarkable job keeping me on my toes. The vibrant relationship between the characters, the compelling storyline that grabs you by the throat, and character development were some of the few strengths of this novel.
When it comes to the character aspect of this read, the first few chapters I was not a fan of our heroine, Liv. After being rescued by her 'Amish/redneck/farmer' savior, Joshua, she seemed selfish and ungrateful when offered food ('I'm a vegetarian', really? It's the end of the world and you're worried about killing/saving animals?), upset when not provided undergarments after bathing (Honey, it's the apocalypse. Do you honestly think he has an extra pair of panties laying around for you in a one bedroom home in the middle of nowhere?), expressing her displeasement when offered reusable feminine products that she didn't prefer (*eyeroll*), rash decision making and rude as she would at times snap and make sarcastic remarks towards him even without being probed. After everything that was done for her by someone who didn't have an obligation to help her, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Her treatment towards Joshua at times was uncalled for, she lacked maturity and was too naive for my liking, and the fact that she was so adamant in remaining a pacifist and vegetarian in a post apocalyptic world was mind-boggling. How was she a survivalist? Everyone knows that if you want to survive, which she did for five months (how the heck, I'm still piecing it together) prior to meeting Joshua, you need to push aside your beliefs to do what you have to do to pull through another day. I was really hoping she would somewhat redeem herself during the course of my read but unfortunately she didn't.
Joshua on the other hand was the complete opposite. I may have been a bit bias (sue me!) but I loved the brooding hero. He was hot and cold, short tempered and emotionally unavailable but there was a subtle warmth behind his farmer like persona that could easily be missed if you were not looking closely enough. On top of that, there were reasons behind his questionable actions and despite living a somewhat sheltered life, he still opened his home to the heroine whom in my opinion didn't deserve it. Joshua speaks thoroughly with his actions and would be described as a man with a few words but that all changes the moment he meets his 'little squirrel', Liv. As the sassy heroine steps into his world, he finds it more than difficult to deal with his bubbling feelings and attraction for her, causing a lot of ‘mean’ moments, conflicting emotions, and hot and cold reactions towards her slightest touch which was entertaining to witness to say the least.
Oddly enough, despite my initial thoughts on Liv, Joshua and her worked well together. What more can I say, opposites attract? And if anyone knows me, I have always been a sucker for a slow burn romance and theirs hit me right in the feels. During the development of their relationship, readers are able to see the growth and depth of their characters. The relationship had a natural feel to it and there weren't any awkward pauses or scenes to make me believe otherwise. The conclusion to their story was perfect. It suited them and didn't end in any God awful cliffhangers or a premonition of more to come.
Needless to say, it was a captivating read from beginning to end even with my sour feelings towards the main character which just goes to show that even if you dislike the MC, the book itself can still be enthralling enough to make the read worthwhile. So kudos to the author for this delightful reading experience and if you haven’t done so already, ‘Moonshine’ alongside ‘Hunter’s Moon’ are obviously great books to add to your future TBR pile as I would highly recommend either novel if you haven’t read any of this author's works.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2024Love this book! Characters were really In depth and complicated and I was beset with angst in wanting them to get together. Needless to say it was a satisfying resolution. By the way I love dolly parton one of my all time favorite singers. I hear the song "I will always love you" playing in my head when I think of these two characters. The story left me wanting more! you've got me Hooked line and sinker, and I need to know the rest of the story. Did wheeler plan this raid? I feel like somehow he's involved and Olivia and Joshua showing up screwed up his plans and that's why be sent 1 of his men up to take care of josh and that failed cause Olivia finally got guts enough To pull the trigger and protect the man she loves. There's another story brewing there and I wanna know what happens with Asher and his family. Hook me again please! Besides that I want them to make puppies in this spring! Thanks for a great read btw my nickname is Moonshine and that's what drew me to read your book and my hubby makes a real nice pomegranate Meade. I love when synchronicity happens.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2025I really struggled to finish this one. It had all the things I usually enjoy:
-trapped together
-post apocalyptic
-woodsy cabin setting
-decent premise
Unfortunately, the 1st person pov turned into one really long internal monologue of FMC playing dumb & second guessing herself about MMC’s feelings. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever read, but personally, it bored me to tears & I ended up skimming the last 70ish pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2024I couldn't stop reading this book. It had me hooked from the first chapter. Joshua didn't win me over at first, but like Olivia, I slowly learned to love him as he opened up as a character. Olivia is a refreshingly realistic 19 year old for this genre. She's not super strong, traumatized, and not even brave or very useful. Basically, she survives until she finds Joshua on pure luck and hiding. The characters bring out the best in each other, Olivia finds her strength while Joshua finds his humanity. The action is minimal, but also very well written and fleshed out. I think this one may need a sequel, I'm not ready to say goodbye.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2023I’ve read a lot of post-apocalyptic books and this one was up there with one of the most decent ones I’ve read. There is good character development and a slow-burn romance! The smutty scenes are a bit more on the PG-13 side for me but not entirely closed door. I enjoyed the grumpy sunshine trope it had going on and would recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2025I enjoyed the characters of this book and both of their broken parts were explained as the healed together. The author does a great job allowing growth without the unwanted and unrealistic personality changes that others might throw in to move the story forward.
Also as an end of the world as we know it story she really kept it simple. You don’t have to fight or fix the world- sometimes you just want moments of happiness that fill you up… this book has plenty of those. It felt real.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I would definitely recommend this book. It hit all the boxes - mystery, romance, good versus evil. A very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I really liked this book, I love how organic the relationship is, I like how complex the characters are, I specially love how cozy it is considering it's a dystopian environment. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time but definitely not the last.
First book I have read from this author and thoroughly enjoyed. Really candid and honest depiction of both main characters had me locked into their journey till the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love conquers all
Beautifully written story set at the cusp of the end of civilisation. Enduring the tough times that come at the end of our easy living, Livs unexpected turn of events finds her sharing the wilderness life with the emotionless Joshua. An interesting friendship turned into love story eventuates. I loved every minute, and my own imagination imagines Liv bringing out more of Joshua's friendly side with the people in town over the summer months and years progressing with a little family in tow. Hopefully Kona has some little puppies too for the kids to play with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, well-written read
Moonshine is very well-written. There is decent character development and backstory to go with the budding relationship. It was interesting from start to finish. Its a slow burn romance, making it a little long, but it was very much worth the time to read it. Definitely a great book to pick up.
