- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019What a tale of Karma! Suspenseful and will hold your interest until the end. Despite the title enjoyed the fact it was not too gory
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2019This book was advertised as a serial killer thriller. I would have to call it a dark comedy because the characters are so unbelievably cartoonish.
The main character is a jealous buffoon who obviously has a personality disorder. We pick up the story after her serial killer career has already begun.
Not too much happens in this book until near the end where there is a climax that is laughable, in a good way.
Ultimately I enjoyed this book but not because it was a thriller.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2019This is a really good book and the story was exceptionally hard at times to read; I wanted to reach out and shake the characters saying "can't someone stand up to her"!! It is intriguing to read how people can so easily be manipulated. Excellent story !!!

Gloria is sneaking into the allotments under the cover of darkness. Heading to a shed owned by Garry, she unlocks it, grabs some tools, and then begins to systematically destroy his plants. Gloria has been a lodger in Garry’s place and is hurt when she overhears him calling her mean names to someone on the phone. She had though he liked her. That’s why she’s getting revenge on him. Since Garry is an accountant, her next plan is to set him to to look like he has stolen money from the cricket club for which he keeps the books. Now, Garry has been suspended from his job, and his allotment has been destroyed. But she doesn’t stop there. That’ll teach him to insult Gloria.
Now, Gloria has decided to rent a room from Maurice. His home is cluttered and not very clean since his mother died. Gloria does not like dirt so she takes it upon herself to clean his home thoroughly and cook meals for Maurice. Soon, she has taken over the place and runs Maurice’s life. Still grieving his mother’s death, Maurice doesn’t complain, but as she assumes they are a couple, he realizes he has made a huge mistake.
In her own room, Gloria has a nice mantle where she displays her doll collection. She has a doll for each person she has killed.
Ian is a school friend of Maurice. He and his father own an estate sale company and both of them are cold, heartless cheats. Ian hates Maurice as he is jealous of how much smarter Maurice is than he could ever hope to be. Maurice was to have been left a flat in the building where he lives by Ian’s grandmother because Maurice and his mother had taken care of the woman for a long time before she passed away. But, Ian and his father refuse to accept this and cheat Maurice. Poor man, Maurice, is cheated by people he thought were friends and he also has Gloria who dominates his entire life. Is there no end to his misery? Oh yes! Come and find out how it all pans out.
This truly is a strange story. I thought we would follow Gloria thoroughout her murderous life, but after reading what she did do in this book, I found I wouldn’t have wanted to read more. For her attitude toward cats, I could certainly do her in myself!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2018I really enjoyed the premise of this book, but didn't like that it didn't stay on topic. Gloria is a fairly fascinating character and I liked that she had a doll for each murder committed. The book also discusses her unwilling housemate, yet I lost interest as it expanded into the landlord and his dealings. I would have liked to know about each murder as a flashback and how it tied into what was happening currently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinister and compelling
I found 'The Doll Collector' compulsive reading, even though I was terrified by Gloria! Each page I turned revealed a new and twisted plan made by this tormented woman.
At the same time, Joanne Stephen-Ward managed to arose my sympathy for Gloria. If only some kind hearted person had intervened at an early stage in her childhood, so much suffering could have been averted. Possibly.
'The Doll Collection' is an epic tragedy played out in a homely setting. It is also set during the nineteen eighties and nineties and evokes this time excellently, referencing the ongoing saga of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
The suspense meant I read this novel extremely fast. I just had to know what would happen! Does love and justice triumph? I won't be revealing the ending here, but I will say I was surprised! A fascinating story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark and engrossing read.
I absolutely loved the sound of this book. Who doesn't love a female serial killer? Especially one who by the sounds, is an extremely twisted one.
Having read and loved Sweetpea by C.J. Skuse, another book with a female serial killer, I was kind of expecting to like Gloria. I couldn't have been more wrong. Gloria is just a horrible person. There were only very brief moments where I kind of felt sorry for her, with how other people perceived her, but to be fair, she brings a lot of bad feeling on to herself. She will do whatever she needs to, to get what she wants and she doesn't let anyone stand in her way.
Maurice is the poor undeserving soul who ends up with Gloria as a lodger. To start with, he thinks he has fallen lucky having her stay there but it doesn't take long for Gloria to get her feet well and truly under the table and make it known who is boss. Maurice is someone who I was really routing for. You can't help but like him and it made my dislike for Gloria grow even stronger.
Thanks to Gloria, it makes this a page turner of a read. She is one absolute psycho and even though I thoroughly disliked her, I had to keep on reading to see what she was going to do next. Lets say she doesn't disappoint, shock maybe but never disappoints.
The Doll Collector is a dark and engrossing read. I was really intrigued to see where the author was going to go with the story and I have to say my heart was in my mouth, many a time, as to who she was going to bump off next. Gripping from the off, this is one not to be missed. Very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read but characters a bit cliched
I liked the style of the book and for the most wanted to keep on reading and reading. I think it was engaging and well written however a few things irked me. As mentioned in a previous review, the fact that Gloria had to be ‘fat’ to make her unattractive is just so cliche now, am pretty sure there are unattractive thin psychopaths out there. The other characters were all slim, rich, beautiful, glamorous and quite insipid and judgemental as they never really gave Gloria a chance before slagging her off. I found Odette was probably a way for the author to get her views about animal cruelty out there, views I agree with but it didn’t necessarily help the storyline a great deal. Also the last third of the book seemed a bit rushed after such a good lead up and I felt a bit disappointed how quickly and neatly it all tied up after being on a slow boil for most of the novel. After all that I did enjoy it and will look out for the authors other work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I'd not heard of this author before but the resume intrigued me. From the start I liked the way it was written and how the characters developed. For me it was a great page turner and kept me up late wondering what was yet to unfold. I can't say much more without giving anything away and spoiling it. You will just have to read it yourself. I don't think you will disappointed.
