An experienced teacher shares her secrets on everything from dealing with parents to navigating the staff lounge.

Classroom Confidential is filled with insights from Victoria Lucido’s thirty-three years of experience as a teacher. Within its pages, she tells it like it is with wit and heart, covering issues that arise both in and out of the classroom to offer support to her fellow educators and help them not just survive but thrive.

Classroom Confidential covers topics not seen in other books on education—subbing and having a sub; coping with the changes that are supposed to “fix” everything; setting boundaries; parent-teacher relationships; making friends with the custodian; evaluations; and perhaps most importantly, how to train your administrator.

Review

“I wish I had the advice from Classroom Confidential when I was a first year teacher. Mrs. Lucido wonderfully describes the realities of the teaching profession ranging from staff lounge conversations to eating in the classroom. These aspects weren’t taught in teacher preparation school yet must be discussed and understood before you step foot into your own classroom in order to be an effective, happy, and sane teacher! The transparency of the many facets of a teacher’s school life and identity, combined with advice on how to handle various situations, will help any teacher add to their “bag of tricks.“ While I am still amazed Mrs. Lucido survived 33 years teaching in public schools, I now understand the personality, outlook, and drive that kept her, and many others, happily in the teaching profession for so long. Regardless if you’re a first or tenth year teacher, Classroom Confidential offers insight and tips to navigate your next school year. Thank you, Mrs. Lucido, for impacting so many students’ lives and helping myself and so many others navigate this profession!”
―Kimberly Kellam, 6th Grade Math, Science, and Leadership Teacher, Walter Colton Middle School

“Vickie Lucido has seen it all over her 33 year teaching career and shares her experiences with humor and wit to help prepare you for teaching in ways other teaching books do not. In Classroom Confidential, you’ll find answers to questions that you never knew you had, but are essential to your success and longevity as a teacher. Have you ever considered how to handle an angry mom? Or how to prepare for a room full of tired parents on Back to School night? Or how to ride the storm when budget cuts and pink slips are on the horizon? Classroom Confidential is a quick and essential read for new and experienced teachers alike with straightforward tips for succeeding in what is a very challenging profession.”
―Marianne Hartfelt, Art Teacher, Monterey High School

A Very Practical Book of Advice for New Teachers

A Very Practical Book of Advice for New Teachers
I can't recommend this more highly. The advice conveyed in this easy to read book is not information taught to education students in school. But it should be....and thank goodness Ms. Lucido took the time and energy to write such a practical guide. Very engaging and sometimes laugh out loud funny, this book would make a great gift to any new teacher. I think school administrators would be a great audience as well...to better understand the teachers experience in their district.

First, let me share that I had the privilege of being one of Mrs. Lucido’s students over 30 years ago. She was hands down my favorite teacher of all time and she made a monumental impact on my life. She genuinely cared about her students and she made learning fun.

It’s no surprise that even in retirement, Mrs. Lucido has found a way to continue to share her gift of teaching. There are golden nuggets sprinkled throughout this book that both new and experienced teachers can benefit from.

Mrs. Lucido provides guidance on many important topics such as how to gain the respect of your students, how to survive as a substitute teacher, common mistakes teachers make, why it’s important for teachers to build a sense of community among themselves and celebrate each other, how to assert yourself to get the things you need for your classroom and your students, etc.

As a parent, it also provided insight into the lives of teachers. I feel like I now know how to better support my kids’ teachers and form a successful partnership.

If you’re like me, life is busy and it’s sometimes hard to find the time to read a book. However this is a quick and easy read. I’ve already purchased several copies to share with friends. I encourage you to buy yoursnow! You won’t regret it!

Ms. Lucido maps out a number of excellent tips and strategies for new teachers in an easy-to-read fashion. She draws upon her 33 years of teaching to share her experiences with others. As a mom of one of her students, I can state that her strategies are not just words- that she applied them in her own way of teaching throughout the years. As a retired community college administrator, I can also emphasize that her “lessons learned” apply to multiple levels in an educational setting. I highly recommend this book for both new and not-so-new educators.

For new teachers (and even for experienced ones) it never hurts to have resource material that deals with the classroom from a veteran; teacher's perspective.. If you haven't taught you cannot teach others, because learning on the job is the best kind of education. Ms Lucido spent years of refining her experience in the classroom and she has some great insights to share. As a former veteran substitute teacher I loved some of her stories about hiring the right substitute.

Classroom confidential is more than just a guide to teaching it is a survival guide for anyone brave enough to enter the teaching profession. I would highly recommend this book to not only teachers but to managers in the business world who are struggling with young employees, because teachers had them first.

As a former educator, I appreciated the honest and straightforward advice given by Victoria Lucido in her book, Classroom Confidential. Her advice is not the typical advice given by educational texts. Instead, the author offers practical strategies for classroom management, as well as tips for dealing with colleagues and administrators from someone who has spent thirty-three years teaching and not only survived, but thrived in her chosen profession. And although I sometimes felt as though her advice was too simple and often based on individual preferences, I nevertheless enjoyed her confidence and enthusiasm. I highly recommend the book to new teachers.

She talks about teaching your best, only to have students ask; " How soon till lunch?" or "Your name is Vickey?" or maybe "Is class over yet?" Every teacher's first nightmare.
And about agonizing over the weekend, knowing you are going to have to call some student's mother, and afraid you will be hated for it.
And wanting to be left alone by the administration etc. to just be able to teach.
The only minor qualm I have is about being too "strict" and homework. Teachers have students for 6-8 hours a day for five days. Students have to wait for the bus, coming and going, and we send them home with homework?
The one GREAT value to homework, if parents knew this, is that it gives a parent a chance to spend quality time with their kid, 15 minutes a day, enthusing over knowledge, socializing with their kid, you read a sentence, let them read a sentence. Occasionally ask questions about it. Make it fun!!!
No teacher, with 20-30-40 kids, can make class fun. Parents could, if they knew. They could change the country.
