The exploits of the British Light Infantry in the Peninsular War are justly famous, and well publicized in several histories of the conflict. Authors Tim Saunders and Rob Yuill have undertaken a fresh history of the Light Division in Portugal and Spain, casting a wide net for overlooked and new sources of information. The result is this first of two projected volumes.
The first chapter introduces the British light infantry, or light bobs, of the Napoleonic era. Subsequent chapters cover the Peninsular War, from the early battles as light companies at Rolica and Vimiero in 1808 through the Light Division's legendary conduct at Fuentes de Onoro in 1811. It is a very readable narrative, easily accessible to the general reader and profusely illustrated. Of note, the authors' pictures of uniformed re-enactors provide a surprising amount of clarity on uniforms, equipment, and tactics. Well recommended.

The Light Division in the Peninsular War, 1808–1811 Kindle Edition
This regimental history chronicles the legendary exploits of the British Army’s Light Division against Napoleon in Spain and Portugal.
From the outset of the Peninsular campaigns in 1808, the Light Division achieved results way beyond their scant numbers. But it was during the epic winter retreat to La Corunna that they showed their metal. Returning to the Peninsula months later, the irascible Brigadier Robert Craufurd led the Light Brigade on a terrible march to meet General Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, at Talavera.
The Light Division played significant roles in the Battle of the River Côa, where the riflemen fought hard to escape Marshal Ney’s trap; the Battle of Buçaco Ridge, the Battle of Salamanca, and many others. More than a simple series of battle scenes, however, this history of the Light Division provides a wider picture of campaigning during the Napoleonic Wars and sheds light on the life of a 19th century light infantry soldier.

Wellington's special forces!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2021
This is an astounding piece of work. To follow the course of the peninsula war through the experience of a single body of men is truly eye-opening! It is written in an easy narrative style with descriptive text merged easily with extracts from contemporary letters, diaries and personal recollections. There are several shaded text sections which give additional information on particular points. The book is crammed with illustrations of either contemporary nature, modern ones by for instance Christa Hook and posed photographs of living historians (or re-enactors). My initial reaction to the latter two was negative, but on re-reading, they did aid my enjoyment. My only criticism was that the annotation of some maps could have been more useful.
The book is of 310 pages with 8 pages of very comprehensive notes and a good index. Surprisingly, there is no list of primary or secondary sources or of references. Also it is unclear what the sources of quotes are.
I have given this book 5 stars, I shouldn’t, because of the lacklustre maps and references. I’ve only done so because in spite of this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am now off to read the second volume.

Pack with anecdotes
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 15, 2022
This first hand account heavy piece of literature does justice to the men it narrates the history of. The writing is lively and I got through the book quickly because it flowed so well. My favourite anecdote was how every town the British reached on the path to Corunna was ransacked for wine and in one case some monks bricked up their own wine store in an attempt to hide it from the British army.

Gre Great insights particularly of the formative years.

I would have given this 5 Stars but for some very sloppy proof-reading which affects this populist publisher.
In terms of content and the experience, this is a terrific read with some excellent insights. It's particularly valuable as it covers the formative experiences of the Corunna, Vimeiro, Porto and Talavera Campaigns before the Light Division formally came into being in February 1810. Thoroughly recommended.

A Good, Readable and Authoritative History.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 20, 2020
A Very Good Read.
Interesting to read an account of the complete Light Division. Authoritatively written.
The referencing from text to maps could have been clearer in places, and proofreading names on maps could have been more rigorous.
Overall, worth the money enough to buy the second volume, which I’ve just done!
