The Hurly Burly and Other Stories (Art of the Story) Kindle Edition
A new collection of short stories from an English master, edited and with a preface by acclaimed author Russell Banks
Originating in the folktale and with an occasional infusion of gothic horror or fantasy, A. E. Coppard’s stories still feel fresh and surprising today. Coppard came to the short story later in life but left an indelible mark on it. Staunch in his belief that the short story was a distinctive form with little relation to the novel, he wove his tales out of the substance of life in the English countryside, with its memorable and distinctive characters.
Reissued with a new preface from award-winning and bestselling author Russell Banks, and including classic tales like “The Black Dog,” “The Handsome Lady,” and “The Higgler,” The Hurly Burly restores this enormously important writer to the position he deserves and introduces him to a new generation of readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021A. E. Coppard is a good example of a writer who gained some popularity during his time, but fell out off the scene and is barely remembered today. Evidently he regarded the short story as a distinct device, that an entire arc could be described using an economy of words. Each of these stories concerns English rural life, examining and expanding its potential despite its provincial nature. At times the language is outdated and florid, but it was a true window into another time.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2021A.E. Coppard is an excellent writer of short stories, mostly folk tales, that tell about English life during his time period. His work is out of copyright so it was a pleasure to see this collection for new generations to read. It is an amazing read by a wonderful author that is an experience in how writers used to portray their stories. Highly recommended for the historical reader!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022Coppard was considered by many to be the master of English short stories, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. Alistair Cooke introduced them, along with others by H.E. Bate, on BBC-TV around
1960. The characters are small in number but large in feeling, and their interaction often leads to intense
and unusual conclusions.
Many of the leading characters are women, and an authority as illustrious as Doris Lessing was a great admirer of the stories, as well as the writer. Most of the settings are rural, and the descriptions are observant and often exquisite.
Coppard's stories have been intermittently out of print for a number years. This new edition has a good large selection and an unusually readable text.
