4.6 out of 5 stars 366 ratings

The Little Book of Living Small offers practical, everyday advice for managing a tight footprint. It features twelve case study homes in which style-savvy, small-space dwellers (from singles to families of four) open their doors and share their design secrets. Stylistically these homes range from urban to rural, minimalist to bohemian, with the unifying thread that they are all real homes of 1,200 square feet or less and offer clever solutions for you to use in your own home. Highly engaging with lists, tips, and actionable advice, The Little Book of Living Small shows readers how to make the most of limited square footage—with grace and style—and serves as the cheerleader readers need to help themselves feel satisfied and proud of their choice to live with less.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A triumphant celebration of small spaces that frames living small as a prospect that's both exciting and eminently practical. Much more than an opportunity to gawk at the tiny places folks call home, this book gives readers an honest look at how to thrive―with confidence and conviction―no matter the constraints of square footage. Ultimately we see how a choice to live small is less about what we might lose and more about we can gain―for ourselves and for our planet.” -- Erin Boyle, Author ― Reading My Tea Leaves Blog and Author of Simple Matters: Living with Less and Ending Up with More Published On: 2020-04-07

“[Laura Fenton has] been living small―690-square feet to be exact―for years (with a four-and-a-half-year-old no less!) and just released a book yesterday,
The Little Book of Living Small, which feels like an anthology of all things small―and is full of some serious tiny house eye candy. Even if you aren’t limited by your square footage, you can still use these strategies for a less clutter, more stylish space.” -- Danielle Blundell ― Apartment Therapy Published On: 2020-04-08

I love this book so much that I read it on kindle but then also bought a physical copy.   I picked up this book because it was so pleasing and visually stimulating to absorb. The pages we're beautiful and really spoke to me despite the wage gap, I'm sure there must be, between myself and the inhabitants.   The townhome we own is about 1500sq feet. It is smaller compared to the other homes in the area, and even smaller still considering we bought it already a family of 5 with a baby on the way. At the time of purchase it was exactly right. We had a temporary living situation when we moved to the area from North Carolina, and it was time to buy. We had not found our forever home yet, but our townhouse was just right. Very much in our price range, truly a great deal, and I always thought will be easy to sell later.   Then I read this book and it really changed things for me. I realized this didn't have to be just our for now home, till we moved on to the bigger and better things I had always imagined. There was a lot to love about out smaller space, I just didn't know how to use it and appreciate it properly, until I did. This book provided a great change in my way of thinking. A new appreciation for living in just enough space.

At this point I've read a lot of books on interior design for small houses, and to my mind this one is definitely the best. It's the perfect mix of concrete ideas and inspiration.
The book is organized by house/apartment. I have no idea how she found the homeowners in question, but their homes are all very stylish and yet in such different ways. Appropriately, that means some of them are more to my taste than others. But I found some good ideas in each chapter. When you see these amazing photos, the author then explains some of the ways those effects are achieved. Again, I learned a lot from this book. I've read books that were equally beautiful but much less informative or realistically achievable for the average homeowner, and then I've read books that were more or less a bunch of design hacks but that weren't as beautiful or inspiring. This book has it all.

My home is 1200 square feet and cluttered. The book has simple and elegant decorating ideas with a universal style. It is a fun book and is on my coffee table so I can pick it up anytime. There are great ideas on choosing furniture or simply moving things around for efficiency, window treatments to let in more light, and important ideas to show and have more space in a room. There is attention to what is good for the environment and also the budget. I am getting such great suggestions for getting rid of things that are no longer useful or important. I highly recommend this book!

Perfectly timed, The Little Book of Living Small feels like the inspiring collection of interiors we need right now. With the barrage of content pushing us to buy (always more and bigger and better) I loved that this book encourages and celebrates a simple appreciation for what we're all fortunate enough to have already. The beautiful, unique, and utilitarian homes feel inspiring but not unattainable—it's easy to imagine the families and couples living their lives in each room. More than the stunning images, the writing and tips inside are just as thoughtful and enjoyable. The suggestions feel easy to implement for anyone looking to shrink their eco-footprint and generally live with less stuff. This is a book that I find myself going back to again and again when I'm in need of a little inspiration or a clever, space-maximizing tip. I can't recommend it enough!

This is a really good book, and I am someone who generally hates on books that tell me how to be better. I not only don’t hate this one. I actually think I love it!! This book isn’t condescending or judgy or unrealistic or preachy. Instead, it’s inspiring, practical, smart, and insightful. For example—there is a page that shows a row of sneakers displayed in one home and the author notes “it’s an example that almost anything displayed neatly can feel like part of the decor.” Simple, but I was like “woah. True,” and it got me thinking in a fresh way about my own space and stuff. Also— this book is written for real people, including people with quirks and kids. I found it refreshingly rooted in reality. it didn’t make me feel bad about my stuff. Rather, it inspired me to have energy, not shame, in dealing with lingering clutter. And it helped me feel comfortable in my desire for less. Reading it reminded me why less (not MORE), small (not HUGE!) and enough (not EXTRA!!) is worth pursuing.
