This is book #3 in this series, however, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. I recommend the first two however, so you don't miss out in knowing all the characters. From the very beginning I was hooked and could hardly put this book down. The story begins in Kabul, Afghanistan and ends in Greenville, South Carolina, Dr. Heather Fontaine's home. She returns from a fun day with friends sandboarding and decided to stop in at the military tent hospital where she is a surgeon, to check on some of her patients. Before she even goes inside she notices a young boy walking toward her. He takes his shirt off and she sees a bomb strapped to his chest. His mission was obviously to bomb the hospital, however, he cries out for help and struggles with trying to get the bomb off his body although it goes off. The explosion rips off his arm and leaves his body a mangled mess. Heather did her best to save the boy, but he dies.

Fast forward four months later and Heather is home, out of the Army, but still having nightmares about the bomb and the boy. She feels like whenever she goes out someone is watching her. Her friends rally around her but she has a hard time asking or accepting help from anyone. She was a foster child and learned to be self-sufficient in order to survive. Suspicious things begin to occur that frighten her so that she runs away and hides in a small town a couple hours away. Eventually she's found by friends, but the troubling situations continue, including getting run off the road and over the edge of a cliff.

As Heather is being protected around the clock by Travis, and other friends, while they seek to find answers, she learns that asking for help, and allowing friends into your life are a good thing.

This book had many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages way into the night. Lynette Eason expertly weaves the various situations into one fabulous story that is nearly possible to put down.

I really liked Travis and Heather and Ryker and, well, all the characters actually! Gina’s betrayal came as a total surprise to me. Who knew? And the birthday party for Ryker at the end…..what an amazing scene! Well done, Lynette Eason! I was hooked with the first book, so much so that I bought the rest in the series and each book just keeps getting better and better! You are a gifted author and I’m looking forward to reading book 4. Can’t wait.

Active Defense by Lynette Eason is one wild ride. This is a story the reader will not want to put down. As with the previous two novels in the Danger Never Sleeps series, Active Defense is a story that will keep the reader guessing right up until the end. It was fun to see characters from the first two novels make several cameo appearances. I actually quite like the deep friendship between the women in this series. They are always there for one another, and, like all true friendships, are willing to call each other out when necessary and hold each other accountable. They are a great illustration of true friendship. I love the relationship between Heather and Travis. I think it is sweet how much Travis is drawn to Heather. His protectiveness of her, his consideration of her feelings, and his acknowledgment of her being an intelligent, independent, strong woman makes Travis one excellent hero. I found that Heather and Travis’s relationship grew naturally and realistically over the course of the story — this is definitely not an insta-love kind of romance. I found Heather’s trust issues relatable. Her upbringing has made trusting others quite difficult. Instead, Heather feels it is best to take care of things on her own and with as little fuss as possible so as not to burden others. I relate to Heather in this. Trust is a really hard thing for me, and I found that the way Heather works through her trust issues is rather realistic and familiar. I also love how down-to-earth and common-sense she is. Heather is a rule-follower, sure, but she also uses her brain. She assesses her situations and creates solutions to problems based on what is appropriate for the moment rather than following a black-and-white rule book. I really love this quick-thinking, common sense, logical way about Heather. And, finally, my favorite aspect to Active Defense is the suspense and mystery. It definitely kept me turning pages well into the night. I love the fast-paced, highly engaging, edge-of-your-seat kind of read that is Active Defense. This is a story I highly recommend, and I cannot wait for the next novel in this series to release!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on January 9, 2021, in order to review. I also received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

The story developed well with intriguing twists. The friendship and concern for one another was significant. This book warmed my heart, may have caused a tear, and kept me wanting more.

This is book 3 of a 4 book series titled Danger Never Sleeps. The book is titled Active Defense. Something that I enjoy about the series is the main character in each book melds a bit into the other books. I enjoy them being a part of the next book. The characters make the story, and the plot keeps you focused. As this story begins, Heather Fontaine is in Afghanistan as a surgeon in the army. Most of the story proceeds back in the U.S. These books are extremely well written and keep you engaged where you don't want to stop reading. Heather has a stalker back at home in the U.S. Travis Walker a security agent has been looking out for her. It is a great read, and I highly recommend this and the other three. I am on the last one and hate to see it end.

As always, a fantastic can't put down suspense! I loved Heather's character revelations and developments, a great insight into a complex personality that was completely realistic. And the who-done-it plot that twisted and turned so many times before the explosive end ... Kept me guessing up to the end!
