About the Author

David "D. L." Jennings is a fourteen-year veteran of the United States Air Force and Air Force Special Operations Command. Deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as several countries in Africa, he finished writing his debut novel, Gift of the Shaper while serving on his ninth combat tour.

After separating in 2018, he spends his time reading and writing epic fantasy, traveling, listening to '90s punk, and bemoaning being an Ohio sports fan.

David "D.L." Jennings was born in Dayton, Ohio to two Air Force veterans. A fourteen year veteran of the Air Force himself, D.L. served under the Air Force Special Operations Command for ten years, deploying 11 times to 6 different locations. He earned an associate's degree in Korean Studies in 2005 and earned his bachelor's in Global Security from Bellevue University in 2008. He finished writing his debut novel, Gift of the Shaper, while serving overseas on his ninth combat tour.
When he is not reading or writing epic fantasy, he enjoys traveling, listening to '90s punk, and watching Ohio State football.

Wrote a review on the first book basically saying it was awesome. This one was also awesome. Fantasy isn’t typically my genre (or so I thought) and really only knew about these books because I work with the author and decided I’d see what they were all about. I got way more into the story and characters than I ever expected to. Glad I got them. I spent the last week or so urging and encouraging (nicely?) DL Jennings to not make me wait too long for the third because I genuinely wanna know the ending of this adventure. If fantasy is your thing, you’ll love these. And if fantasy is not your thing, you’re probably just wrong like I was. Read the books.

Review: I think the author did well with the sequel. I enjoyed this book more than I did the first one and I think the author did well advancing the plot and continuing the world building.

However the pacing continues to be a problem for me in this series and I also felt that the characters weren't as well developed in this book as they were in the first one.

Verdict: It was really good!

I loved this book! I bought it through a bookstore but wanted to leave a review on Amazon. Awaken the Three is both a beautiful and guttural fantasy tail of a world of gods and men at a point of breaking. The story begins by introducing various, seemingly disparate characters. Each one unique and intriguing, their person and motivation are displayed with exquisite detail. Throughout their tails, a unified story begins to emerge as histories are revealed and paths align. When I read the first book, Gift of the Shaper, I couldn't put it down, I felt the same way about this book. Can't wait for book three!

There's a whole amazing world of people and cultures that comes alive in this series. The different powers available to specific people greatly influence the shape their cultures take. Distrust of "the other" runs deep in these societies; the characters are faced with situations where they must decide if overcoming their inborn prejudices is worth the risk. There's adventure, battles, love, loss, magic, and a detailed and amazing map, everything a good fantasy novel needs. (I attached the map in the book and an updated map from the AMAZINGLY TALENTED cartographer who made the map in MS paint, like a BOSS)
