The New Normal: A Roadmap to Resilience in the Pandemic Era Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 401 ratings

From Dr. Jennifer Ashton—the Chief Medical Correspondent at ABC News covering breaking medical news for Good Morning America and GMA3: What You Need to Know—comes a doctor’s guide to finding resilience in the time of COVID, while staying safe and sane in a rapidly changing world.

In March 2020, “normal” life changed, perhaps forever. In its place we were confronted with life and routines that were unusual and different: the
new normal.  As we’ve all learned since then, the new normal isn’t just about wearing masks and standing six feet apart—it’s about recognizing how to stay safe and sane in a world that is suddenly unfamiliar. And no one understands this evolving landscape better than Dr. Jennifer Ashton. As ABC’s Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Ashton has been reporting on the novel coronavirus daily, helping Americans comprehend the urgent medical updates that have shaped the nation’s continued response to this public health crisis.

Now in The New Normal, Dr. Ashton offers the essential toolkit for life in this unfamiliar reality.  Rooted in her reporting on COVID-19 and the understanding that the virus isn’t going anywhere overnight, The New Normal is built on a simple foundation: thriving in this evolving world demands accepting the new normal for what it is, not what we want it to be. No longer is wellness a buzzword, but an imperative for surviving this unprecedented time. Using her trademark practical, easy-to-follow advice, Dr. Ashton gives you all the necessary information to reclaim control of your life and live safely—from exercise, to diet, to general health—showing how to prepare your body and mind for challenges such as:

- Taking proper medical precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones

- Exercising during the pandemic, even if you no longer feel safe at the gym

- Finding emotional balance through these uncertain times

- Deciphering complicated medical news to learn what to trust and what to ignore

With these straightforward and accessible strategies and many more, Dr. Ashtonhelps empower you to make the unexpectedly hard decisions about socializing, food-shopping, seeing doctors, and most of all, finding normalcy. At once reassuring and urgent, The New Normal is a holistic roadmap through the ongoing struggles of the pandemic, providing the guidance you need to navigate this unsettling time and take charge of your future wellbeing.

Retiring stiff paper gowns and unrelatable medical advice, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a Board-certified Ob-Gyn, author, and TV medical correspondent, breaks the barrier between doctor and patient. Affectionately referred to as your all-in-one ‘BFF’/Ob-Gyn, Dr. Jennifer Ashton marries an unparalleled medical background with an accessible ‘girl’s-girl’ attitude. Though Dr. Ashton can easily speak to the latest beauty and fashion trends, this Ivy League graduate means business when it comes to women’s health.

From the onset, you might wonder how Dr. Ashton does it. Hailing from a family of 6 physicians and 1 nurse, this wife and mother of two possess a uniquely well-rounded understanding of the human body. Leading by example, Dr. Ashton not only ‘talks the talk,’ but ‘walks the walk.’ When she’s not in the office, she can be found training for triathlons or following her very own Five-Day/Two- Day Eating Plan. Dr. Ashton demonstrates first-hand how to embrace and feel empowered at every stage of womanhood. This relatable and modern approach is highlighted in her latest book Your Body Beautiful (Penguin), a coveted resource for the medical community and women at every stage of their lives.

THE PRACTICE

Dr. Ashton opened her private medical practice, Hygeia Gynecology, in Englewood, New Jersey in 2008. Physically and aesthetically unmatched, Hygeia Gynecology is aptly named after Hygeia the Greek goddess of health, healing, and cleanliness. Resembling a spa more than a doctor’s office, patients are immediately escorted from a Zen-like reception area to examination rooms where they are surrounded by luxurious materials and high-tech equipment. Instead of scratchy and uncomfortable paper gowns, patients are enveloped in plush Kashwére robes, much like the ones you’ll find at a hotel. Patients are physically and metaphorically “wrapped in comfort,” explains Dr. Ashton.

The first eco-friendly medical practice in Bergen County, Hygeia is officially GreenOffice Certified. Ninety-nine percent of the office’s contents are green and non-toxic, including energy-efficient light-bulbs, low-VOC paint, sustainable furniture and organic cotton fabrics.

EDUCATION

While she spent her early years coloring at nursing stations while her parents (a doctor and a nurse) worked, Dr. Ashton recognized at a young age that she was destined to be a doctor. Attending Columbia College, Columbia University as an undergrad, Dr. Ashton went on to receive her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she served as Class President for four consecutive years.

Dr. Ashton immediately gravitated towards gynecology, as it encompassed virtually every facet of the medical field. From surgical (think c-sections and GYN cancers) to psychiatry, Dr. Ashton’s knowledge runs the gamut. More importantly, Dr. Ashton is drawn to the primary care issues affecting women; she explains: “I feel like being a female Ob/Gyn is like being captain of a great sisterhood team! There is so much that a woman goes through that I can say, ‘I know exactly how you feel.’”

A big believer in perpetual education, Dr. Ashton has just completed a 3-year program at Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition and has received her Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition in 2016, making her one of the only M.D.’s with a national media platform who is also formally credentialed in Nutrition. Dr. Ashton is also board certified in Obesity Medicine.

MEDICINE IN THE MEDIA

In October 2017, ABC announced Dr. Ashton as the Chief Medical Correspondent & Health Editor, making her only the third person at the network to ever hold this title. In 2015, Dr. Ashton was named Chief Women’s Health Correspondent for ABC News, where she has been Senior Medical Contributor since 2012, and appears several times a week on the nation’s number one rated morning news broadcast, Good Morning America. In 2013, she was named co-host of the nationally- syndicated, Emmy Award-winning daytime medical show, The Doctors. Previously, Dr. Ashton worked as the Medical Correspondent for CBS News Network and The Fox News Channel and has regularly contributed to a number of shows including The Early Show, The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, The Dr. Oz Show and TLC’s A Baby Story. One of the few practicing physicians with a national media platform, Dr. Ashton’s dual roles in clinical medicine and medical media keep her on the cutting edge of medical and health news and advances.

AUTHOR

Dr. Ashton’s award-winning book, The Body Scoop for Girls (Penguin) was released in January 2010 and is an approachable guide to teenage health. In her second book, Your Body Beautiful (Penguin), released in January 2012, Dr. Ashton calls on her own beauty regimens, eating plan and fitness routines to offer a comprehensive health and lifestyle guide for women age 30-50. From heart disease to teeth whitening, Your Body Beautiful is the ultimate resource empowering women to stay strong and sexy in their 30’s and beyond. The book launched in soft-cover in December 2012.

In May 2016, Dr. Ashton released her third book, Eat This Not That When You’re Expecting, co-authored with Dave Zinczenko. The book is a doctor-recommended eating plan for pregnant women written from her experience as a Board-certified Ob-Gyn who now has a degree in Nutrition. It provides a trimester-by-trimester eating plan for mom and baby and is available at Amazon.com

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher (William Morrow) in exchange for an honest review. This was an incredibly insightful and informative read!First off, this book is so accessible. There is no medical jargon here. Everything is broken down in easy to understand language. Dr. Ashton does a fantastic job explaining the basic science behind COVID in a way everyone can comprehend.Secondly, the book is also very practical. Dr. Ashton provides readers with advice that is realistically attainable which I appreciated. Sometimes books like these can prompt readers to do some lofty things, so I was happy to see that this book offered more grounded advice.Throughout the book, she also shares anecdotal stories about her life during the pandemic which made the book relatable. Seeing a doctor go through similar struggles shows that this pandemic affects everyone in some way and that we all have a common struggle.Since the virus is constantly changing, parts of this book are a little outdated. That was to be expected. Because of that, there is no discussion on the vaccines. The book is generally, very well written. However, it is sometimes circular and repetitive. She will sometimes state the same ideas again, even though she just said it two pages ago.Overall, this was a great read. I recommend it if you’re looking for some practical guidance in navigating our new normal!

A great book to read. I loved the layout of the book it was well detailed but to the point. I learned a lot about myself but picked up additional things I could do to improve my well being. I'm the night Netflix guy she talks about in her book. I am reminded that it's not easy to take care of myself but I must be diligent especially in the time of the new normal. Small steps . One day at a time . A lot of good facts in regards to COVID-19 and your options. Always look for the Silver Lining . (Sort of a special friend telling you to keep at it. Your not alone)

Dr Ashton gives insights and tips in a clear and very understandable format. Instead of just being the ABC medical professional, after reading her book I think of her as a friend who really understands as a medical professional how COVID-19 and the pandemic has impacted our lives on practical levels.

I like Dr. Ashton a lot. This book was very knowledgeable to me. However the first couple of chapters gave me anxiety when I thought about how our world will never be the same again. As the book went on she had very practical tips with health, weight, exercise, sleep, etc. After reading it I do think I have a mild case of what she calls health anxiety. I’m thankful for all of Dr. Ashton’s hard work during this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on April 26, 2021
