The Hawker Hunter: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives (Images of War) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A “well-done” pictorial history of the legendary fighter plane “that both enthusiasts and modelers alike will enjoy”(ModelingMadness).

If ever there was a real pilot’s airplane it was the Hunter: an outstanding multipurpose aircraft which excelled in the roles of interceptor fighter, ground attack, reconnaissance, research vehicle, and two-seater trainer, not forgetting its dramatic formation aerobatic performances.

For decades, pilots have enthused about the Hunter, extolling the virtues of its smooth, aerodynamic lines, 4 x 30mm cannon, the Rolls-Royce Avon engine, and its outstandingly honest handling characteristics combined with a lively performance. It saw operational deployment in Europe with Fighter Command and 2nd TAF, in Cyprus, the Middle East, and the Far East, operating in the ground-attack role against rebels in Aden and Malaysia respectively. The Hunter was a classic thoroughbred of its time, from the stables of one of the finest fighter manufacturers in the world and, for fifty years, its adaptability was rarely challenged.

Although the last example was retired in July 2001, the Hunter legend undoubtedly lives on, with 114 potentially air-worthy airframes located in fourteen countries around the world. Here, the legendary tale of the Hunter is told in words and images.

Top reviews from the United States

This book was eagerly awaited especially from the Pen & Sword stable, but on arrival and review, it was obviously mostly recycled Hunter lore, with a number of errors and suppositions, apparently carried forward from other publications (its a trap many of us authors and compilers fall into), and nothing really new. The photos are hardly rare as most have been published in other books over the years. Credits are omitted with just the 'too many to mention' tag including Crown photographs, and with only a very few being identified. The title of the series, too, is misleading - 'Images of War' where the Hunters that fought in wars are barely mentioned and the concentration is on the RAF who barely used these aircraft in combat, other than those in Singapore and from Aden. Bowman states that he has paid homage to Francis K Mason "whose listing by serial number of every Hunter built in 'Hawker Hunter: Biography of a thoroughbred' published in 1985 is as indispensable today as it was then" That book, originally published in 1981 not 1985, is now nearly 40 years old and far from complete or accurate, there have been many more since that time. Bowman also fails to mention the use of the Hunter currently by companies allied to the military, that fly as target and aggressor aircraft for the cost-effective training of military forces, companies such as HHA, in the UK and ATAC in the USA. The Hunter is still evolving, however, this book is not. The book will sit in my Hunter library but I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed this time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disapointing.

There are only 119 numbered pages in this book followed by thirteen blank pages, so well short of the 144 pages mentioned in the book description (and on the publisher's website as well). Also, all photographs are in black and white and of varying quality. The only colour photographs, a grand total of six, are on the front and back cover.
The text, however, is informative and the photo captions provide detailed information for the aircraft depicted.
