From the New York Times bestselling author, “a compelling guide to determine what you wish to do in life, and the best ways to build a meaningful career” (Ken Auletta, bestselling author).

Newcomers to the workplace. The recently fired. Those desiring to advance with their current employer, and those eager to move on. And many who have found what they do for a living deadening, disappointing, and tedious. For these reasons and others one in five Americans change jobs every year.

Drawing on his extensive career in the non-profit, commercial, and public service realms, Reynold Levy will help you think about your future creatively and prepare for it resourcefully. How to network naturally and adeptly. How to interview effectively. How to perform well in your current job. He will offer you a recipe for moving up in an appealing organization or moving out gracefully to a better position elsewhere.

Start Now offers concrete, actionable, practical advice: Taking fullest advantage of school, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. Learning how to succeed at work without being imprisoned there. Asking others for help compellingly.

“This book is about work—finding work you love, getting it, doing it well, leaving it—but it is also a book about how to live. Part memoir, part social analysis, part practical guide, it is a terrific read: wise and fun, deep and light, full of stories about people and problems, and the sheer good pleasure of a job that gives back to the world. Never moralizing, just right,
Start Now is a book for us all.” —Jennifer Homans, New York Times bestselling author

I initially read Start Now because my 19-year-old son just started college and is looking for direction. He’s busy at school right now so I thought I would check out the book for him. I ended up wishing that Start Now had been available to me last year when I was in the middle of a job search. It was my first time in the job market in many years so I really could have used a confidence boost like Start Now! Reading this book is like having a wise counselor listen patiently to all your career questions and respond with real world advice just for you, at every step of the way. It works for people of all ages and career stages, from just out of college, to mid-career, to retirement. As a parent, I particularly appreciate that Mr. Levy also reflects on what it means to have a meaningful life, referring to his own experiences over the course of his own long career in public service. Start Now should be in the arsenal of every college counselor, career advisor, and seeker of career/life balance. I'll be referring back to it (and I'm getting my son his own copy).

Most career-advice books seem to be written by people who write such books and articles for a living. It is unusual to encounter a book written by someone steeped with career success who is, moreover, more interested in helping the reader than extolling his or her own successes.

Start Now is a welcome exception. Reynold Levy has decades of experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, has been engaged with every facet of the hiring process from both sides of the table, and has absorbed life lessons through thousands upon thousands of encounters with professionals on every rung of the career ladder, from aspiring assistants to retiring CEOs.

It is hard to imagine a better use of one's money, and several entertaining hours, than this book. Between its covers is a treasure trove of seriously considered and researched, and elegantly articulated, ideas for how to lead a more fulfilling life and pursue a more rewarding vocation. All offered, with candor and humor, out of a generosity of spirit and irresistible desire to help others. It is a book I enjoyed and will return to repeatedly as a reference and guide.

Reynold Levy’s advice, “The best time to look for a job is when you are securely settled in another one”, might be a startling and unfamiliar career framework to some. This advice reflects a positive, pro-active and ‘if things are good now, they can (and should) be even better in the future’ call for reflection and action. By sharing his experience and personal stories that showcase impressive achievements and successes as well as disclosing discouraging challenges and setbacks, Levy urges us to demand the most of ourselves. This takes hard work in the spheres of current job performance; personal and career exploration; and conscientiously building a network of mentors, guides and supporters.

Reynold Levy’s broad range of successful and impactful leadership positions in the private sector, non-profit sector, the arts and academia is certainly unique. Guided by a moving personal philosophy and set of professional ethical values, Levy’s practical and compelling advice is immediately actionable no matter one’s current station or scale of future ambitions.

Invest in yourself by reading this book. The return on your investment will be remarkable.

It’s not as tactical as any “knock ‘em dead” book with that many Q&A suggestions. Nevertheless, it’s very strategic. For anyone who wants more and better chances in the job market, please read both.
