While Justice Sleeps: A Thriller (Avery Keene Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 17,385 ratings

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A gripping, complexly plotted thriller set within the halls of the U.S. Supreme Court, where a young law clerk finds herself embroiled in a shocking mystery crafted by one of the most preeminent judges in America—from celebrated national leader and bestselling author Stacey Abrams.

"Abrams follows in Dan Brown’s footprint with this masterfully plotted thriller that unfolds like the ultimate chess match—bold move to bolder move with lives hanging in the balance."—Lisa Gardner, author of Before She Disappeared

"A first-class legal thriller, favorably compared to many of the best, starting with
The Pelican Brief, which it brings to mind. It’s fast-paced and full of surprises—a terrific read."—Scott Turow, author of Presumed Innocent

Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together--excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn--the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases--has slipped into a coma, Avery's life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court--a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.

As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm's way in order to find the truth.
While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters. Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction.

Stacy Abrams is an amazing writer! This legal drama kept me turning pages and excitedly looking forward to each chapter! All of the characters had depth and I had a love/hate connection with them all as if I knew them. I hope she writes more in the very near future.

In addition to being a stellar gubernatorial candidate for the State of Georgia, Stacey Abrams can spin quite a story. “While Justice Sleeps” is a thriller with some very interesting characters and a complex plot involving international espionage and the Supreme Court, but it never gets stale and the storyline stays taunt throughout.

I was pleasantly surprised… and it’s an easy read even if you’re not a lawyer!

Avery Keene, the heroine of this story, clerks for Supreme Court Justice Wynn. Avery becomes embroiled in a situation that may cost her her life at worst, her career at best. The story was a little hard to get into at first, mostly due to the many twists and turns the story takes. By the time I reached the middle of the book. I was hooked. The story is quite involved, with a large cast of characters from SCOTUS Wynn, his estranged son, the FBI, Homeland Security, Avery’s addict mother, a corrupt president and his evil henchmen. I am looking forward to reading Stacey Abrams next book.

I loved this story.

Author Stacey Abrams brings all the elements of today’s great political-fiction, suspense thriller novels -- this story has major box office potential.

If you’re a lover of current literature, there are many comparisons to some of today’s best books. Avery Keene, a Supreme Court Clerk, investigates this lethal mystery and underlying secrets using her incredible intellect and bravery, like Jacqueline Winspear’s iconic detective Maisie Dobbs. There’s also thrilling elements similar to Jack Carr’s “The Devil’s Hand,” such as a President deeply involved in a secret operation of international intrigue, highly trained, lethal former military personnel doing good and evil, espionage, and Washington politics at the highest level. Adding to the story, the author explores a complex mother-daughter relationship, evoking great empathy for Rita, a bedraggled mother who, like Kristin Hannah’s Elsa Martinelli, fell on hard times, sacrificed and suffered for their daughters (in very different ways), lost their respect, but play crucial roles in the thrilling climax of the stories.

The book is also very entertaining for chess lovers, particularly those who are legal/political fiction, suspense thriller fans. The author playfully weaves in chess strategy, applies it to the case before the Supreme Court and the case under investigation. The chess board unfolded before me as I read. Initially, I thought President Stokes and Judge Wynn are the kings, Avery and Vance are the queens, Jared is a knight, Ani is a knight, Indira is a bishop, Nigel Cooper is a bishop, Betty is a rook, Noah a rook, Rita is a pawn, Special Agent Lee is a pawn, Curlee is a rook, Celeste a bishop. I find it challenging to identify all the chess pieces on Stokes’ side, besides Stokes, Vance, Curlee, and Judge Wynn’s ex-wife, Celeste. Jared suggests Avery is the bishop in the Lasker Bauer move, but I think she’s got to be a queen, the strongest piece. Also, there’s a suggestion that Judge Wynn is a bishop, but it seems like there are too many bishops, and who would then be the king? I guess this is something we can debate all day long.

There are other elements that add to the story throughout, like the vivid descriptions of how characters feel, from Avery’s jolt of coffee to Rita’s desperation for a fix. The author playing with a relationship between Avery and Jared, learning about Jared’s military background, his hacking skills and knowledge of the government’s ability to spy on all of us, also added to the story. Incorporating discussions such as Supreme Court’s inner workings, law clerk dynamics, legal precedent and procedural law, make this so interesting for those who love, study and/or practice law. While I may have missed any specific reference, another thing I sense is that the author intentionally left race to the reader’s imagination, without specifically identifying the race of the characters, but providing some physical and background descriptions.

It’s incredible how the author neatly and satisfyingly tied every intriguing thread together, saving the biggest surprise for last. I did not see it coming, but leaves me asking, if Vance was a queen as I suspect, how can he put his own king in checkmate?

I love the angle she took and her brilliant plot but, like many books of this genre, the storyline was just convoluted. It didn't read smoothly and sensibly. If you're just in it for the characters, politics, and law though, then it's great.

The characters were easy to like, hate or fear. At moments predictable when you just knew Avery was going to get conked on the head and then shocked when someone was quickly murdered!
