Call me Dragon (Dragon Fires Rising Book 1) Kindle Edition
Call me Dragon. It’s the last thing you’ll ever do.
*Gold Award for best SciFi/Fantasy book of 2021 - Independent Publisher*
Blitz the Devastator has never done a decent day’s devastating in his life. Fireless, artistic and shunned by his Dragon Clan, he struggles to pillage even the meanest village. A future full of misery and failure beckons.
This much is true until the day the burly brown Dragon successfully – imagine that – kidnaps the Princess Azania. As a black Princess of T’nagru, this spirited beauty is by definition the most unforgettable woman in the seventeen realms. Knights errant, men-at-arms and sundry Princes expire at her feet in drivelling worship.
Unfortunately, they all want his scaly head on a platter shortly thereafter. Goes with the territory.
To Blitz’s consternation, the royal nuisance refuses to behave herself and be a typical pampered Princess. With humour, unconventional flair and the odd stomp of her diminutive slipper, she sets out to reform her Dragon.
One question remains. Who will save the Dragon from the Princess?

That said, this story is not a spoof. It's an adventure that is balanced with humor. The story is told from the dragon's point-of-view, but the princess's character comes through with equal strength. The danger is dragon-sized, the personal dilemmas are relatable to us humans, and the depth of the unlikely friendship is endearing. It also kept me up to 3:00 a.m. with an ending I couldn't put down.
This book is the first in a series, but it has a satisfying conclusion of its own, with space for another complete story. (Which I plan to read.)
"I'm not a damsel in distress, but a dragon in a dress"
In short, these books are an amazing read. And I've read them over and over and over again....

Marcs writing style and outstanding vocabulary helped draw me into book 1, the humor was noticeable and appreciated in this book and it helped develop the characters well. As you continue into the story though and into book 2 it starts to become distracting and I dare say even annoying at times. No longer adding anything new or important to either the story or character development I found myself starting to skim though the constant bombardment of this dialogue between the princess and Dragon and find the actual serious story interwoven in between.
As I read though book 2 I started to notice the preachy-ness of this book a little more. I fully expect an author to put some of themselves in the book by expressing their personal views of the world but here more often then not this was done in a not so subtle manner, and sometimes in a way that broke the continuity of the story for no other reason that I could tell. Book 2 had some wonderful, well written moments that made me glad I read it through to the end, and I honestly believe that had the author was able to shorten the story and complete it in book 2 I would probably have given it a better review.
Book 3 was a complete slog of a read, I found myself considering stopping after the first 100 pages wondering if it was really worth completing. By this point most of the questions about our protagonist had been answered and all that remained was a long slog to a familiar-feeling final battle while trying to find the actual story between line after line of princess/dragon and dragon/mate dialogue. While the last remaining questions I had regarding the family dynamics of Dragon were answered many of these ended up being dismissed in a short, single sentence of text which felt like a lost opportunity to make the story better and more complete.
What started out as a refreshing touch of humor in these books was overused and became a frustrating distraction. Clearly some can put up with it over nearly 1500 pages, but it wore me out quickly. After finishing the first 3 books I felt no desire to read any of books 4 or 5.
Leicht zu lesen und trotzdem fesselnd geschrieben.
Ein neuer und begabter Erzähler von Fantasy.
I was worried that there may be shades of Anne McCafferey in there but not a bit of it!
I highly recommend this book.
