As You Were (Itaska High) Kindle Edition
Seventeen-year-old Hannah is head drum major in her school’s marching band, and she treats that role with the gravity it deserves. A task that’s often difficult, seeing as the group is underfunded, the principal has it out for them, and the freshmen keep pouring random liquids into their trombones.
When a contest between after-school groups is announced, Hannah’s determined to win the ten thousand dollar prize to save her beloved band. There’s only one problem: her main competition comes in a charming, freckled package named Eli Marshall, the star of the theater program . . . a.k.a. the guy she just broke up with.
When things quickly get personal, Hannah must face the music: Has she been doing leadership—and relationships—all wrong?
"Filled with beats of drama, romance, humor, and heart, AS YOU WERE is the marching band book my nerdy teenage self always wanted. Kids who found their family in the band room will definitely enjoy seeing themselves reflected in these pages." — Heather Kaczynski, author of Dare Mighty Things
"AS YOU WERE has a brassy female lead, a catchy cast of supporting characters, and a quick-moving plot that never stops marching forward—all set to the irresistible beat of non-stop witty banter!" — Anna Priemaza, author of Fan the Fame

About the author
Tasha Christensen believes the best love stories are found in the geekiest places. When not composing tuba closet make-out scenes, she enjoys writing music, getting way too competitive about board games, and exploring the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. Tasha lives with her husband, daughters, and an overly affectionate dog named after her favorite Stranger Things character.

I loved the casual representation of a bisexual male love interest, which is so rare to find in YA. (Especially in a story with a female lead!) The representation in this book in general felt much more in touch with real high schools than a lot of other YA I've read.
I wish this book was out when I was a band kid, because I would have loved to read it in high school! A great read for marching band members, marching band alumni, or any ambitious kid in high school: they'll be able to relate to Hannah!
Another huge strength is the protagonist, who genuinely acts and thinks like a high school senior. Unlike dozens of other YA novels, I never doubted for a moment that Hannah was a teenager. She is driven, emotional, short-sighted, assertive, centered on herself and the problems she cares about, and so thoroughly relatable that she brought me back to my own high school memories... in ways that DON'T make me cringe. (Mostly.)
The plot is tonally on point - competing to "save the band program" (or so the rumors go) is precisely the sort of thing that feels like life or death to a teen but wouldn't be as all-consuming to someone older. Not to mention juggling friends, classes, parents, romance, and marching band among other extra curricular events. (I kept wondering why Hannah almost never does homework, but I'm willing to chalk it up to the mild fantasy aspect - in a world where happily ever after is guaranteed, maybe homework doesn't exist. Sign me up!)
Hannah's extreme preoccupation with her ex-boyfriend got slightly overbearing - I kept being more interested in everything else going on in her life - but again, it felt authentic. Also, this is a romcom, of course the cute boy will take center stage in her brain.
Hannah's relationship with her parents also felt real and relatable, to the point where I wanted more of it. At least, I wanted one more conversation with her mother where faults were acknowledged. This is expected to be a series, though, so maybe that scene will appear in a later book.
The representation in this novel is noteworthy in its well-roundedness. While several characters are minorities in a variety of ways (race, sexuality, disability, even religion), they are largely not defined by it. For example, Hannah is an adoptee from South Korea, and while that shapes her, it does not define her. It pops up in casual commentary ("He's definitely better at [speaking] Korean than me - and I was born there") but otherwise is simply Hannah's background, both historically and figuratively. The only person to refer to Hannah by race is an internet anon who clearly doesn't know or care about Hannah at all.
Intersectionality and culture clash are organic; topics are addressed in a nuanced manner with a light touch. (view spoiler) Also, I personally freaking love the bisexual and the Mormon representation, and deeply crave more of both!
Overall, AS YOU WERE is a solid novel, somehow managing to be realistically grounded and fantastically romantic at the same time. As a writer, the highest compliment I can give this work is: I wish I'd written it myself!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
be made, Through the telling of competing for a scholarship (granted to a winning arts program), there's Laughter, heartache and teachable moments that Hannah goes through.
I personally believe this would be an awesome book rec/gift to any and all high schoolers! I’m 100% gifting a copy of this book to my high school freshman niece! I’m 22 but this book even had me emotional at the end 🥲 As a alumni athlete this book was an awesome insight to some of the friendships I missed out on or even would’ve enjoyed as I had zero inclusion in any arts programs including theatre and band! (And we had a pretty awesome band too!)
If you’re reading this review, just get the book! It’s a cute YA novel and who doesn’t love supporting our indie authors!!
