Death Knell (The Duncan Maclain Mysteries) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

A blind detective separates fact from fiction to save an innocent writer in this mystery by the author of Blind Man’s Bluff.

Following the loss of his sight in World War I, ex–intelligence officer Capt. Duncan Maclain honed his other senses and became one of the most successful and well-known private investigators in New York City . . .

Acclaimed novelist Larmar Jordan and his wife, Lucia, are throwing a cocktail party in their luxury Fifth Avenue apartment. Among the guests are their friend Sybella Ford and her fiancé, Duncan Maclain. Everyone is in high spirits until the arrival of Larmar’s mistress, Troy Singleton. Maclain may be unable to see, but even he can tell that certain partygoers are far from pleased by her presence.

However, the real drama unfolds when Troy returns the following day—only to wind up dead on the terrace. The police are certain Larmar pulled the trigger. He was the only person home at the time, and the murder weapon came from his extensive gun collection—but he didn’t do it. At Lucia’s request, Maclain takes the case. Now, the sightless sleuth must quickly unravel this twisted tale of murder, before the judge throws the book at Larmar . . .

Baynard Kendrick was the first American to enlist in the Canadian Army during World War I. While in London, he met a blind English soldier whose observational skills inspired the character of Capt. Duncan Maclain. Kendrick was also a founding member of the Mystery Writers of America and winner of the organization’s Grand Master Award.

People need to rediscover this author. Every book is suspenseful and original

The brilliant blind detective, Captain Maclain, takes on the impossible job of proving Larmar Jordan innocent of shooting his mistress dead. Since Jordan was the only person with her in his apartment when she was shot, and the weapon came from his own extensive gun collection, the case looks “open and shut.”

Anyone interested in antique guns and swords will love this book. For me, though not a gun person, the assorted weaponry was an intriguing plot element infusing the story with complexity, confusion, and misdirection. The web of relationships, open and secret, among the characters adds another layer of complexity.

Maclain cannot see faces, which lie anyway. But he can hear the emotions betrayed in voices, and he can identify people by their footsteps. He uses his acute senses to astonish people with Holmes-like deductions, which is fun, as well as to map out the topography of his cases. Maclain is a wonderfully appealing sleuth, with his seeming superpowers and his all-too-human weaknesses.

Red herrings are very skillfully introduced. Dogs play an important role in the plot, not just Maclain’s gentle guide dog and his fierce police dog, but a nervous cocker spaniel.

High points are the friendly insults bandied about between Maclain and the two detectives. I always look forward to this tough guy banter.

Death Knell is a classic Golden Age puzzle mystery, nicely spiced with some hard-boiled dialog. I love the Maclain mysteries, and wish there were more in print.
