Out of Control (The Duncan Maclain Mysteries) Kindle Edition
Murder disrupts a blind PI’s honeymoon in this mix of detective novel and psychological thriller from the author of Death Knell.
The wife of a wealthy Tennessee mining tycoon, Marcia Fillmore has worked hard to get to where she is in life. She’s also a woman with a dark past, one she’s put behind her . . . until a man walks into the Black Pigeon in Gatlinburg and takes a seat beside her at the bar. Marcia doesn’t take kindly to him threatening her with blackmail, following her home—or seeing her kiss a man who isn’t her husband. Everything could fall apart. No, something must be done . . .
A former intelligence officer in the army, Capt. Duncan Maclain lost his sight in World War I. Since then, he’s honed his other senses and become a successful private detective whose unique skills are sought after frequently. So it’s no surprise when he arrives in the Smoky Mountains with his new bride and the sheriff asks him for help investigating a suspicious car wreck. With evidence that points to foul play, the sheriff and Maclain know they’ve got a killer to catch—but she’s not going to go down without a fight . . .
“Ingenious.” —Kirkus Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021I started this because I very much like Kendrick’s Duncan Maclain books. The Captain is a favorite of mine. Kendrick has exquisitely plotted, thoroughly detailed whodunnits (in the Play Fair with the Reader school, so he has to hide the clues for the blind Maclain plain sight among the descripti9ns of everything else.) I do avoid serial killer thrillers. I didn’t realize this was one until I started reading it, and got hooked. Following little Marcia as she tries to get what she deserves and MacLain makes his counter moves in unfamiliar territory is compulsive. Except for the “Impossible Crime”, it’s quite different from the typical MacLain, but it’s even better than Kendrick’s highly professional, tricky, and thrilling average.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018Captain Duncan Maclain, the famous blind detective, is in the Tennessee mountains on his honeymoon. There, in a social setting, he meets Marcia Fillmore, a beautiful young woman who feels neglected by her rich husband. As events unfold, a stranger in town meets his death in a drunken car accident. Maclain falls naturally into the role of helping the sheriff investigate.
Marcia and Maclain are the central characters in this book. Maclain dazzles with his ability to sense everything around him and his uncanny ability to find clues in utter darkness. His blindness, instead of being a handicap, is a powerful weapon to disarm the guilty and expose their deceptions.
Marcia is a scary beauty, and we spend a lot of time inside her very unpleasant mind. This made the book an uncomfortable read for me, but I have to give it credit for effective suspense. Bernard Kendrick is using a fairly modern technique characteristic of many a psychological thriller.
I’m reading all the Maclain mysteries I can find. This is not my favorite, but nonetheless, I always enjoy watching Maclain at work.
