When newlywed Lynnette Foster’s cop husband gets into trouble, he takes it out on her with a punch to the face. Lynnette refuses to be a victim and walks out the door. Fearing her husband will follow, she heads for the Miami airport to put as much distance between them as possible. But Lynnette is dead wrong about who she must fear the most. At the airport, a foul-mouthed thug known as Fat Ass Sammy Grick grabs her laptop by mistake and leaves her in possession of something his criminal boss, Benito Ortega, wants back bad enough to put a hired killer on her trail.

After a bumpy flight into the Denver airport, Lynnette leaves the plane to find an alternative route to Los Angeles, still unaware she has the wrong case. Eleven-year-old Grace McCoy follows Lynnette off the plane. Now Lynnette is the target of a criminal who wants his stolen goods back, and at the same time, she becomes the unexpected and vulnerable guardian of a smart-mouthed kid who tells lies and threatens to run away if Lynnette takes her to the police. What else can possibly go wrong?

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR

DEAD WRONG

"Intrigue, vengeance, battles of wits and will…all the ingredients for a fast-paced suspense from a fresh new voice."

--Sophie Littlefield, author of the Stella Hardesty mystery series, dystopian Aftertime series, and suspense novels for adults and YA

"Stoltey's Dead Wrong has breakneck pacing and one of my favorite themes: a woman on the run. It's a fantastic combination of suspense and action from a new writer on the suspense scene."

--Jamie Freveletti, #1 Amazon bestselling author of Dead Asleep and author of Robert Ludlum's The Janus Reprisal.

"Lean and lightning-paced, Patricia Stoltey's DEAD WRONG is both a finely plotted and heart-thumping thriller as well as a cautionary tale: never marry an abusive cop, never unintentionally switch carry-on bags with a psychotic killer when flying coach, and never, ever under any circumstances pick up this book if you hope to get anything else done the rest of the day."

--David Freed, author of the Cordell Logan mystery series ( Flat Spin, Fangs Out, and Voodoo Ridge).

I grew up on a farm in central Illinois and have also lived in Oklahoma (windy), Indiana (like Illinois), the south of France (such fun), and Florida (wet). I used to be an accounts payable manager and worked for a wonderful grocery chain in Indiana, another in Florida, and finally, an office supply corporation based in Florida.

Now retired, I live in Colorado with my husband and critters Sassy Dog and Katie Cat. I periodically fly off to visit grown-up kids in different parts of the country. 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of my high school graduation. Yes, we had a grand reunion. I thought it would be more scary than facing a pool of alligators, but we had a great time and stirred up some wonderful memories.

When I'm not writing, I read. And when I'm not reading, I do a lot of writing- and reading-related activities like blogging (https://patriciastolteybooks.com). I love television and movies, too, especially "reality" shows like Survivor and Big Brother, as well as mysteries and cop shows, especially those British series on PBS. I'm a member of Mystery Writers of America, Rocky Mountain Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, Sisters in Crime-Colorado, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and Pikes Peak Writers. My two frontier fiction books, Wishing Caswell Dead and In Defense of Delia, were published under the author name of Pat Stoltey.

Lynette is on the run, wearing sunglasses and makeup to hide the bruises. She knows she’s just one step ahead of her pursuer, and the thought keeps her riding the raw edge of fear. Her husband is a cop, so calling on law enforcement for help is out of the question. But Lynette’s made a serious error. Her husband isn’t among those chasing her.

Her husband is already dead.

I won’t say more about the plot of Pat Stoltey’s Dead Wrong, because any summary would do damage to the clever, intricate series of turns that fuel this thriller. Rather than circumstantial or contrived, the misunderstandings that keep Lynette moving are character-driven, which makes the story both surprising and inevitable.

Stoltey juggles a number of characters, all of them memorable. (I will mention one. “Fat Ass” Sammy Glick is an astounding creation—foul and fascinating.) Stoltey handles a supporting cast as well as any writer I can think of.
And Lynette is a wonderful protagonist—sassy, hurt, frightened and courageous.

It’s not enough to say that Dead Wrong is a page-turner. This novel is stuck with me like a classic. Stoltey is a master of the genre, and she deserves a huge audience. Do yourself a huge favor—buy this book, a bottle of wine, and a pizza. Lock the door. Read.

Dead Wrong’s heroine, Lynette Foster, on the run from an abusive husband, accidentally switches carry-on luggage with Fat-Ass Sammy Grick, triggering an increasingly vicious pursuit which Lynette doesn't understand until well into the story. Along the way, she is forced to accept responsibility for a young girl whose reasons for being on her own keep changing.

When the police find Lynette's husband was murdered a few hours after she walked out, she becomes their chief suspect. Now she’s being hunted by both the police and the criminals. Lynette’s a resourceful and courageous woman, but the author keeps her hopping trying to evade capture by each side, and protect her young friend.

The characters are fleshed-out and believable. The way the thugs’ strategies keep going off the rails is described with dry humor that doesn’t dilute their very real danger to the heroine. Kept me interested until the end.

I read most of my books at the end of the day in bed to unwind. This one not only kept me up past my bedtime, I had to read some of it on the weekend so I knew I could finish it sooner rather than later. I enjoyed the fast pace, the going back and forth between the characters. Very enjoyable. I'm headed to find another book by this same author.

Lynette Foster tends to run away from her problems, so when her new husband slugs her, she packs her bags and flees. At the airport, her laptop case gets switched with one containing items a thug can't afford to lose, and Foster finds herself running for her life. I enjoyed this fast-paced novel, which switches points of view from our heroine to some very bad guys. Along the way, Foster's life gets more complicated as she acquires extra "baggage": a ten-year-old girl traveling alone and a young woman who isn't who she seems to be. I appreciated how the author piled on problem after problem for the females I cheered for. And I laughed at an accident-prone hitman who keeps taking himself out of the action.

This is a rollercoaster ride! The characters are quickly developed and I felt I knew some of them. So was sorry it ended. Someone needs to make a movie of Dead Wrong!

From the opening sentence, Lynette Foster is staggering. Reeling. “She raised her head and stared at her fingers, now smeared with red streaks. Liquid oozed down her throat when she tilted her head back. She gagged and coughed.”

Patricia Stoltey starts "Dead Wrong" mid-fight—a domestic dispute. Her husband, a cop, has been demoted for over-zealously trying to break up a fight. “Punks.” (Talk about a theme ripped from today’s headlines.) Carl, the cop, starts slamming doors and acting ornery, then taking it out on Lynette when she tries to get him to settle down.

Meanwhile, Sammy Grick is just trying to do his job. He’s a courier. He works for a man named “Mr. O,” Mr. Ortega. He’s a “vicious slimeball.” Sammy has got an assignment that might be his “best chance to make good and get more responsibility, do something more respectable than smashing fingers with a ball-peen hammer or hoisting bodies into dumpsters that reeked of rotten meat.”

But Sammy is prone to mistakes. Slip-ups. Details are not his friend. He’s so big he needs two airplane seats. His nickname is “Fat Ass.”

Soon, Lynette and Sammy are on the same plane out of Miami International Airport. They don’t know each other but matching carry-on luggage is about to bring them together in a way that neither really wants. Lynette sips martinis. Sammy sips Jack Daniels. (These drinks don't mix well; neither do their drinkers.)

When Carl turns up dead, well, by now we are in full-tilt motion. Lynette has the wrong piece of luggage and Sammy, in short, needs it back. Big-time. To complicate matters, Lynette has befriends an eleven-year-old runaway girl who follows her off the plane.

"Dead Wrong" is all action. We’re soon in Colorado and the weather is frightful. Lynette has stories to sort out, voice mail messages to decipher and hiding places to find. Sammy gets some help in tracking Lynette by a hapless thug named Albert Getz and Stoltey dishes heaps of misery on both of Lynette’s pursuers. Um, more than misery in some cases. Twists of fate yank hard. "Dead Wrong" is one solid ride.
