- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021Gene Heil writes with a revealing nature that most authors fail to do. He opens his life-his messed up life-and recounts emotional stories from his life. He's lived through alcoholism, abuse, multiple failed marriages and the other ups and downs of life. Through his storytelling we're able to look back on his life and see how God has shaped him to be the man he is today. At once compelling and relatable this is the book for those who need a reminder that no matter what, through whatever happens, God is with you and he has a plan for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021Gene Heil has written a very powerful book. Well worth reading. I know this man of faith, personally, and can vouch for his sincerity, integrity... and genuine love for, and commitment to, Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2021An honest, transparent story of a mans life that most people would never imagine or know without reading the book. I pray that the book will minister and bless many!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021Very insightful and informative way of growing up in a dysfunctional atmosphere
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021It’s not easy to share some of the darkest and most painful moments of your life to the world. But that is exactly what Gene Heil has accomplished in the pages of his new book, “God Loves Messed Up People”. The reason for such transparency is not to embarrass or expose others but for the sole purpose that his authentic truth would be useful in the life of someone else who has experienced similar tragedies.
Sometimes we incorrectly believe that the horror’s we have faced are somehow our fault or that we deserved it. But that simply is not true! Unfortunately, we cannot control the actions of others, but we can control how we allow it to affect us. The truth is that we are all messed up in some capacity; some mild and some severe. But the good news is that God doesn’t throw us away as other people might.
Prayerfully, as you began to dive into the pages of Gene’s story, you will find hope and healing from his journey that you can apply to your own. Gene did not arrive to his place of wholeness on his own. It took a lot of caring and loving people at various stages of his life but most importantly it took God. I too at times in my life have been messed up but I am grateful that “God Loves Messed Up People”.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021I really enjoyed reading this book mainly due to how honest the author was. I cried, smiled and related to some the dysfunctions within family. This is definitely a must read for anyone who questions if God loves messed up people.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2021I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
It takes a lot of courage to open yourself up to others about having been abused physically, sexually, or emotionally. In his book God Loves Messed Up People author Gene Heil brings to light the emotional aftermath of abuse and dysfunctional living. It literally messes us up when we keep it inside. His experience began as a child who held the secret inside for so long that it affected his life until he learned to have a more structured life after serving in the armed forces and found a church where he felt safe.
Heil helped me recognize just how any form of abuse can affect relationships. With a great deal of humility, he shares how the fear and shame of abuse affected his life choices and relationships in adulthood. When he began to deal with his emotional pain, he turned to God. Towards the end of the book, Heil shares his thoughts on racism. As a white man raised in a predominately Black neighborhood he was often beaten and teased. Having lived through these incidents and interracial marriage, the author makes an appeal to readers to “move beyond your perception of others”.
My favorite line in this book is, “hurt people, hurt people”. That short phrase made me realize just how important it is to talk about the things that hurt us most and seek help through talking to a trusted friend, a counselor, or finding a place of worship where you too can grow stronger in your spiritual life in order to find the love and peace the author himself had sought for so many years.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021Wow! This book is worth reading y’all. For sure God loves messed up people.
God bless you Gene Heil for reaching out to souls through this book I believe everyone who reads it can testify that God lives and His love is unconditional.
