4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 149 ratings

When a Scottish soldier finds love in the midst of war, he will go to any length not to lose it in this WWII epic by the acclaimed author of Ardnish.

Like his father before him, Donald Angus Gillies is leaving the small highland village of Ardnish to go to war against a distant enemy. Joining the British Army’s Lavat Scouts, he

is sent on a mission to the Alps, where he soon meets the beautiful Francoise, a French-Canadian agent of the Special Operations Executive. The pair immediately form a close bond, but when Francoise is captured, Donald Angus realizes how strong his feelings for her truly are.

His desperate attempts to find her prove fruitless. But a posting to Canada leads to some remarkable news, not only about Francoise, but about his own family. Reunited once more, Donald Angus and Francoise plan to live together in his beloved Ardnish, but have one further mission to complete first – a mission more dangerous than anything they have ever faced before . . .

Editorial Reviews

Review

If ever there was a story ready-made for the big screen, the Ardnish trilogy is it: an unforgettable case, heart-thumping adventure and romance, but above all a backdrop of spell-binding beauty'
National Trust Magazine

It is hard to put the book down for it is compelling reading. A captivating novel, which incorporates so much of the beautiful Highland scene and its people, along side the horrors and destructions of a war torn world. An inspiring read!'
The Braes

An intense and bittersweet love story. Portray[s] a fascinating picture of life during the war, and the descriptions of travel from Ardnish to Canada and the Italian front combine to make this a compelling and engaging story'
Scottish Field

We Fought for Ardnish is not only a gripping and at times horrifying adventure, a romantic story set during a terrifying war; it is also an important piece of social history. But perhaps, above all, it is a tale of the importance of true love and determination.”
The Scots Magazine December 2018

An excellent reflection of love of one’s home and heritage. A page turner and rather difficult to put down'

We Fought for Ardnish is on one level a charming love story between two Allied special operations soldiers in World War II. However, Angus MacDonald has skilfully woven into the plot a gallery of characters (some of them from real life) and a truly authentic portrait of the culture of the west highlands of Scotland. Through careful research and the re-telling of stories, songs and traditions, he paints a touching picture of the simple, unspoilt village life of family farmers in the majestic but harsh conditions of the west coast. Their joys and hardships, loyalties and faith are vividly brought to life. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with a love for this beautiful part of Scotland. It lyrically conveys the determination and enterprise of the people, the sad but proud traditions of war and of emigration and the sense of a way of life inexorably slipping into the past.

I love this book! I purchased this and Ardnish Was Home in a gift shop at Glencoe Visitor’s Center. What an incredible find! Plus both copies are autographed! I love the way the author goes back and forth between a beautiful crofter’s life and war torn times. Finding love in the midst of chaos! It’s a wonderful mix!
I highly recommend this series and can not wait for book 3 to come out!

In this sequel to Ardnish was Home, a generation has passed and another war is raging. Let yourself be transfixed by this moving love affair between a Highlander and a Canadian secret agent, a tale brimming with historical accuracy, suspense, and romance. Meet some of the individuals who played a pivotal role in the war effort and see how it affected their lives, loves and discover some of what they endured in order to win.

An intense and beautiful love story full of adventure based during the second World War. I could not wait to read this book after reading the first in the Ardnish series. I loved this sequel and was equally as brilliant as the first book. Again, lots of historical information and stories throughout the book. Another 5 out of 5 stars for this book. Each book gets better and better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and very readable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2018
An excellent adventure – and touching love story – set during the Second World War; fast-paced and well written. Two young SOE operatives – Angus and Françoise –are dropped into wartime France. Each has a specific and deadly mission: his, to destroy infrastructure, integral to the Axis war effort; hers, to assassinate a particularly vicious Nazi general.

Ahead of their separate missions, they are sheltered together by Resistance fighters on the Franco-Italian border. During those days they tell each other their life stories: Angus of his upbringing in Scotland’s Highlands; Francoise, of growing up on Cape Breton Island in Canada. It’s not a shock that they fall in love. That’s the easy part. Accomplishing their tasks under the most fearsome conditions, the tragic but realistic consequences, and the aftermath take up fully half this very readable novel.

If you haven’t read the first novel, don’t be deterred from starting in on this book. Though a sequel to MacDonald’s earlier novel, Ardnish was Home, the setting is twenty years later and the chief characters did not feature in the first book.
