FRED'S SHORT BIO:

Fred Sievert started his career as a teacher, later entered the insurance business, and retired in 2007 as president of New York Life Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 corporation. Following his retirement at age fifty-nine, Fred attended Yale Divinity School and was awarded a master’s degree in 2011.

In his career, Fred enjoyed many successes but also had to deal with much stress, many challenges, and even some serious setbacks. Through it all, he credits his success to a reliance on daily prayer, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and his relationship with Jesus Christ.

Fred has had many nonfiction essays and articles published in the past, most often about his own providential and life-changing encounters with God. In 2014, he published his first book, God Revealed: Revisit Your Past to Enrich Your Future.

He views his thirty-five-year business career as mere prologue to what God is calling him to do today⎯write and speak about his faith.

Throughout his adult life, Fred has been active in his church and has served in numerous lay leadership positions. He and his wife, Susan, have five grown children and three granddaughters and reside in East Falmouth, Massachusetts.

FRED'S THOUGHTS ON HIS FIRST BOOK

Every life is a unique journey, and each of us travels through life accumulating experiences and memories that ultimately impact how we behave in every moment.

Like you, how I will interact tomorrow with my spouse, children, siblings, coworkers, friends, and even adversaries is impacted and altered by my unique accumulation of life experiences.

It’s both an incredible gift and an enormous responsibility to realize that among my unique personal experiences, at least some contained revelations and messages from God.

I’ve shared my experiences to persuade you that God does in fact speak to us through our life experiences.

As you read about my journey, I hope it will inspire you to be on the alert for future messages from God and to ponder your own past for messages you may have initially missed.

The stories I tell are the stories of my journey through tangible life experiences that started when I was very young and will continue as long as I live.

My earnest hope and prayer is that you’ll reflect thoughtfully and constructively on the experiences of your own life as you read about mine—and that you’ll consider the reality that God has been speaking to you in a way unique to your needs.

Every life, including yours, is a unique journey, one that is important to God and one in which He will provide guidance, blessings, and unconditional love.

Excellent Christ-Centered Advice Applicable to Life and the Workplace
Fred Sievert’s daughter asked, “What can I do to get noticed and distinguish myself from all the other young employees?” She was a recent college graduate in an entry-level position. After much thought, Sievert, a Christian and a former president of a Fortune 100 company, shared five tips to utilize biblical principles in the workplace. After seeing her success, as well as others he had advised, he authored this book. Fast-Starting a Career of Consequence: Practical Christ-Centered Advice for Entering or Re-entering the Workforce consists of three parts: introduction, applying biblical principles to the workplace, and using ten startup tips to fast start a career of consequence. The book also closes with a final word and appendices. After reading the introduction, I was excited and curious to continue to Part 2. Chapter 1 explained identifying and using your spiritual gifts at work. I had not considered applying my spiritual gifts to work. I just worked to pay my bills. It sounded so nice to find out what my strengths are, and in doing so enjoy what I do while using my God-given talents, glorifying Him. I immediately took the “Spiritual Gifts in the Marketplace” assessment in the appendix. I recommend this assessment to all Christians. It will help you know your God-given strengths to apply to all facets of your life. Chapter 2 spoke about values and beliefs. Sievert encourages readers to understand the company’s value statement and align yours with theirs. I loved that he gave examples of real businesses and what that would look like. This makes perfect sense for someone wanting job satisfaction, as well as moving ahead in a company. I enjoyed these two chapters the most because they caused me to reflect on life, especially entering the new year, not just applying it to a career. I wish I had known then what I know now. With my high scores on creativity, compassion, giving, and service, I would have sought a career in advertising with a company that values people over profit and gives back to the community. The remainder of Part 2 contains chapters that encourage Jesus as a workplace partner, praying for guidance, and applying the Golden Rule with coworkers and customers. Part 3, "Ten proven fast-start tips”, while filled with excellent nuggets usable in life, was mostly pertinent to a professional setting. It included advice related to meetings (Chapter 12) and presentations (Chapter 13). Chapter 11, “Take charge of your own development”, was very applicable to everyday life. The author gives tips on mindsets, productivity, and people skills. My other favorite chapter of Part 3 is Chapter 15: “Balance faith, family, and career.” The author shares a heart-warming story I loved, but you will have to get the book to find out what it was. The book was well organized and professionally written and edited. I give this book a five out of five rating. A person does not have to be a Christian to read this book, but they do need to know it contains Bible verses, biblical principles, and personal testimonies. Someone who despises those things should not read this book. As the author writes at the beginning of the book, “This book is about the symbiotic relationship between faith and career. As Christians, we are happiest and most pleasing to God when we identify our God-given spiritual gifts and then use them in service to the Lord and in pursuit of our chosen careers.”

Genial.

"Fred Sievert's book, 'Fast-Starting A Career of Consequence,' offers valuable insights for integrating faith into the workplace. The three-part structure helps readers align their spiritual gifts and values with their career paths, enhanced by biblical teachings. The practical advice and personal anecdotes make it relatable and impactful, although some may find the advice overly simplistic. However, the universal principles transcend religious boundaries, making it relevant to a wider audience. While the religious tone may not appeal to all, the book's relatable approach and well-edited content make it a worthwhile read for career-minded individuals. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars."
