- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2021About five years ago, I sat on a study selection committee for our church’s Thursday morning Bible study of about 150 women. Our committee decided to review some studies on the topic of prayer, but we found what was available didn’t meet our needs so passed on the subject. When I saw this new study, I knew Extraordinary Prayer is what we had been looking for then. Marybeth McCullum states the book’s purpose as answering questions, easing misgivings and igniting passion for prayer. She tells of Moses, David, Solomon, Jehoshaphat, Daniel, Mary, Jesus and Early Church leaders as they encountered our extraordinary God in prayer and learned to trust him. To me, a major strength of the book is its ease in working with Bible study group members. The content is very rich, compelling and excellent discussion questions are all there, making it so easy for leaders to facilitate their groups. Each chapter has a section on personal prayers readers can write in a journal. There’s also space for personal reflection and noting prayer practices you want to incorporate into your prayer life. In my opinion, this study is a gem.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2021My small group just wrapped up this study on prayer, and it was excellent. Marybeth McCullum leads us through different people in the Bible and their interactions with God through prayer, as well as His response to them. Perhaps my biggest takeaway from this study was the practice of remembering God's faithfulness in the past, as well as speaking Scripture in my prayers. Those two practices use my mind to remind my heart of God's character and God's promises when I'm praying... this also changed how I pray! I'm not typically a "topical" Bible study gal, but I give this study 5 stars. Very user-friendly and beneficial for both mature believers and those exploring faith for the first time.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021Marybeth McCullum is a talented speaker and writer. Our small group thoroughly enjoyed her study on Extraordinary Prayer. We loved how she shared the stories of ordinary men and women of the bible and showed us how God was able to use them for His greater purpose. These followers of Christ were humble and contrite, and still accomplished great things. In her study, Marybeth inspired and encouraged us to emulate these disciples.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021I participated in a guided study through this book at my church. I have to admit there were a few lessons skimmed over as I was experiencing personal events that demanded my time. The time I did spend, digging in and journaling as the author recommended, gave me the closeness to God that carried me through my trials. There is a chapter for each of us, with a Bible person in which we can relate. This book has a great format, and I can’t wait to reread this summer
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2022This book is such a great study. I love how knowledgeable the author was on the historical content in the Bible and how she was able to connect that to our prayer life. I found this book to not only be inspirational, but also very helpful in deepening my prayer life by learning how to better communicate with God. It was a wonderful study to do with my weekly Bible Group, but it would be perfect to do on your own too.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021Our church small group just wrapped up this study and we all agreed that the tools we learned in this study will last with us a lifetime. We appreciated the weekly focus on different characters of the bible and how they prayed and that this study will have you in all parts of the bible. My major takeaways that have been game changers are how humility affects just about every aspect of my relationship with God and the different aspects of prayer. This study was a blessing!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021This is an amazing study that takes you through powerful prayers in the Bible. You will be challenged to grow your prayer life and relate it to Biblical stories. The discussion questions are easy for facilitators to use to frame the conversations. The homework or "time with God" is applicable and relevant to the study. We very much enjoyed this study! You will not be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2021My small group did this study together and we had great conversations. I loved how she taught us about prayer through studying how Moses, David, Mary, Jesus and others prayed. Each week I learned something new and grew in my understanding of prayer. Also, the study flows well and is just the right amount of time each week. Grateful for this book and look forward to her next study.
