Brigadier General William Denis Whitaker DSO and BAR, CM, ED, CD, BScMil, OC, LdH, CoC was one one of Canada's most highly decorated officers of WWII, a military historian, and sportsman. This personal biography written by his only daughter takes the reader from his early life playing racquet sports, captaining both hockey and football teams, through WWII and on to the many athletic and business accomplishments of his captivating life. His interest in horses led him to foxhunting, horseracing, and to become the impetus of the successful Canadian Equestrian Team of the 1960's and 1970's, that won many gold medals. Despite his busy life he had time to be a true family man. A touching and memorable read.

GAIL ROSE THOMPSON grew up in Ontario, Canada where, as a young girl, she became involved in show jumping and training horses. She graduated from Hamilton Teachers' College and taught school for several years before she travelled to Iran where she worked for the Imperial Court of Shah Mohamad Reza Pahlavi during the "Golden Years" of the 1970s, training his horses and the Iranian Show Jumping team. She returned to Iran in the fall of 2017 where she was able to connect with old friends and see the country, that has been so misrepresented by the press, as it truly is, almost forty years post revolution. She lives in Ocala, Florida.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the life of a Canadian Hero
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2023
Was hoping this book would contain a bit more about his war experiences - summarizing his time in Dieppe, Antwerp and Holland. However it was also eye opening in what else this amazing person was able to achieve in their lifetime. I knew him as the Honorary Colonel of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Regiment. An absolute legend of a Canadian Veteran.
