Stories from the Barn Aisle: Real Life Tales of Humor and Grace from a Horse Obsessed Girl Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 102 ratings

About the book:
A girl’s obsession with all things horses carried her on some epic adventures and landed her in precarious situations. When her first horse came with the same name as the hero of her favorite book, Misty of Chincoteague, it seemed like a match made in heaven. However, it didn’t take long for Sarah to learn there is no such thing as a good fairy tale without a little trouble. It turns out horses cause a lot of trouble. From first rides and crashes to making road-trip errors and staring at the belly of a horse in full-on Black Stallion mode, follow Sarah on her wild adventures from the safety of your own home … or wherever you are reading.

Stories from the Barn Aisle includes these 5 short stories:
  • Dreams & Horsehair
  • Misty (not) of Chincoteague
  • It Tastes so Sweet
  • Northbound or Bust
  • Finding a Place
Praise for Stories from the Barn Aisle:
I've ridden horses my ENTIRE life so I did not expect to be entertained or impressed with Sarah's "Stories from the Barn". I was wrong—on both counts. I couldn't stop reading her book, her stories. Sarah is a gifted storyteller and between the recollection of my own memories of my early interactions with horses and Sarah’s entertaining recounting of her own, I simply could not stop reading this book. Anyone who has ever loved a horse will love this book. Highly recommend!"
- Donna Barton Brothers: Former Jockey, NBC Sports Horse Racing Analyst and Reporter

"While I know next to nothing about horses and have never spent time in a saddle, reading Sarah's words put me there and even despite my inexperience, I can feel the thrill of it."
- Erin Napier, star of HGTV’s show Hometown

About the Author

Sarah makes her author debut with Stories from the Barn Aisle. Always a storyteller and a bit of an adventurer, she finally decided to write her stories for the world to read. As a kid, her favorite books were from the Thoroughbred series, and the books inspired her to leave her home state of Mississippi to gallop racehorses in Kentucky while in college. Sarah is now settled down (which sounds more grown-up than she feels) in Virginia with her husband, two kids, a horse, a dog, and a bearded dragon.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Hickner was born and raised in Mississippi and began riding when she was 11. At 19 she followed her dreams to gallop racehorses in Kentucky. The next 2 years became a wild ride of epic highs and (quite literal) hard falls as her world came crashing down around her. The pieces came back together to create a story worth sharing.

Sarah has been fueled to share this part of her life because she believes that strength can often be found in the broken parts of our stories. Her journey is a living testament to one of her favorite Bible verses, Romans 8:28 “ We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Sarah wants to share this message of hope with her readers. When it feels like the sky is falling and nothing good could come of the situation GOD CAN work it for good, and He always does.

When Sarah isn’t writing or at the barn, you’ll find her cheering on her kids at one of their many activities or trying to maneuver around her tiny kitchen with her husband, Joey.

Horse Girls' Delight

Horse Girls' Delight
Good start for a first book in what I assume will be many more fun memories for the author, a fellow horse obsessed girl grown. In this first installment we meet the author as little girl dreaming of and finally having her wish come true with a gift horse —a typically sour pony mare. Struggling with her pony who’s smarter than she looks, we gain a few giggles at the author’s bumpy expense.Graduated to a gentleman big horse, the author now a teen, takes a spicy barrel racing competition by storm and boosts her confidence to dare dream of galloping Thoroughbreds for the track.College bound and trekking from the Deep South northward, our author learns the number one big NO when trailering a horse and we horse girls sweat along with the author, hoping the trip isn’t a disaster. Finally in Kentucky, the author steps foot in a TB training barn, overwhelmed but determined to one day gallop a two-year old around the track. The journey from hot walker to rider may be quick but I’m sure there will be excitement along the way. Stay tuned for more good-hearted horse memories!

If you enjoy life on a farm or just breathing in the fresh air as you travel off the interstate highways, this is a book you’ll not want to miss. Life is always full of surprises, work to be done, and friendly neighbors with whom to chat about the price of tea in China! You’ll meet the men and ladies whose work is mover done, cows, who of necessity and hearts full of love, leave their cosy beds in the middle of the night to slug through mud or snow, to get to the dimly lighted barn in order to assist the delivery of a new calf or foal or piglets. Birth is always an amazing miracle and the sustainability of life is crucial. The wife of a farmer instinctively keeps a freshly brewed pot of coffee and apple pie to serve to whoever might have dropped in with the latest news or needs or gives a helpful hand. My heart longs to be there, to learn the art and science of food preservation, sharing recipes, learning economical use of materials. Farming families have wisdom of the ages and it has served them well. Waste not, want not.
This book is available at Amazon, postage free. See! No wasted money for you , dear reader. Go ahead, order a copy for your friend, too!

This is a well written and edited collection of short stories; a brief synopsis of Sarah's life as a horse lover. Only horse lovers can understand the obsession. However, this author has cleverly brought the people who are just benevolent toward horses into the realm to observe the chaos, craziness, over the top pleasure and heart soothing love of these incredible animals. I'm hoping to read a much expanded version of this one! Grab this book and take a short trip into the "horse world". I highly recommend it. Great stories Sarah!

I have only been on a horse once or twice. The horses don't like me, so I don't even try. The book has given me a lot of information on the horses.

These short stories brought back wonderful memories of my childhood and teen years growing up with horses. Loved the one about barrel racing and I sure could relate to her horse not wanting to load back in the trailer. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to the next book that continues Sarah's journey in the Kentucky Thoroughbred world.

This was a fun read! Since I know the author it was delightful to get to know more about her life. I particularly like that she made this book easy for those of us who know NOTHING about taking care of horses to enjoy and understand!

I found these stories to be absolutely adorable. I was raised on a farm with horses, and there were so many of this author's stories that brought back fond memories of my time in the barns, riding with friends, and just being around these gentle beasts. There are so many moments in these stories that people can relate to even if they've never ridden or spent time around horses.

I love the way the tales are divided up in a way that the reader can put the book down for a moment and come back to a new story without missing a beat. I truly enjoyed these remembrances, and I look forward to reading more of her journey as she continues to write.

Zero experience with horses here. So this was a simple, low-key entree to that world. Thanks for the brevity and friendly tone.
