Gospel Privilege: The Unearned Advantage That's Meant for Everyone Kindle Edition
"Privilege" is a naughty word. In this day and age, sometimes "Gospel" is too. But put the two together—Gospel Privilege—and you get the greatest unearned advantage there is. And this benefit is meant for everyone.
You're privileged if you have access to the Gospel of Jesus. Sadly, millions of people have never heard the good news you love and cherish. So, what's the answer to this great imbalance?
In Gospel Privilege, author David Joannes shows what gospel privilege is and what gospel privilege does. Story-driven and well-researched, this book provides the keys you need to unlock your full potential as an effective witness of this kingdom power.
This resource will inspire change in you as you read testimony after testimony of people who use their gospel privilege to bring the kingdom message worldwide.
In this upside-down world, when the have and have-nots are at war; when the privileged and underprivileged contend for resources, man fails to look at what’s truly important: eternity.
Each chapter focuses on key takeaways to help you live and thrive in your God-given calling:
- Gospel Worth
- Gospel Access
- Gospel Poverty
- Gospel Momentum
- Gospel Justice
- Gospel Compassion
- Gospel Humility
- Gospel Triumph
In America, the fight for equal rights, better treatment under the law, social justice, and income inequality permeate our dialogues. Now more than ever, people are vying for power and influence. Yet too few in this country actually consider the greatest power of all, known to millions of believers worldwide as the kingdom of God.
In Gospel Privilege, author David Joannes testifies, “Gospel privilege is the soul-saving, culture-shaping, world-changing message that’s come into the world through the Person of Jesus. It is an unearned spiritual advantage with eternal consequences meant for every human being.”

How will you use your privilege in this hour?
"In Gospel Privilege, David Joannes rightly contends, ‘We must become global Christians with a global vision because we serve a global God.’ Indeed! As David makes abundantly clear, being a global Christian is an essential obligation for those who have been privileged to hear and believe the gospel, realizing that thousands of people around the world die every day lacking that privilege." — PAUL CHITWOOD, President of the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC)
"In the past several years, the upsurge of violent persecution against Christians globally has taught us that obedience is costly but worth it. We’re surrounded by people who choose Jesus daily, even when they know it may cost them their lives. They’re privileged to know Christ, and, like our friend David, we’re privileged to stand alongside them in the same spirit and with the same hope. Wherever you are, meditating on the reality of your gospel privilege will build your faith, knowing that a life set upon the kingdom of God will bear eternal fruit." — HEIDI BAKER, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of the Board at Iris Global and author of several books, including Birthing the Miraculous
"This book is a poignant reminder that those who have been privileged to receive the gospel are also charged to relay it to others. The gospel of Christ is not ours to keep but to lovingly pass on—especially to those who’ve never heard it. And Joannes doesn’t stop with just presenting the biblical mandate; he offers practical steps and inspiring stories to help us live out this vitally important imperative. Highly recommended!" — MARK MITTELBERG, bestselling author of Contagious Faith, and Executive Director of The Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics, at Colorado Christian University
"This book is a spiritual kick in the gut. Joannes’ passion permeates Gospel Privilege. He understands that we don’t have to take the good news to the rest of the world. We get to as a divine privilege. I highly recommend this well-researched and passionate book to anyone who considers themself a follower of Jesus Christ." — NIK RIPKEN, author of The Insanity of God, The Insanity of Obedience, and The Insanity of Sacrifice

"Every once in a while, a book comes along that has an overt purpose of giving you a spiritual whack upside the head, and sometimes the whacking is actually welcomed. David Joannes has given us just such a book." — GARY COMER, Founder of Soul Whisperer Ministry and author of Soul Whisperer, ReMission, and the Missional Engagement Series
"Wake Up! That's the message Joannes has for American Christians. This means renewing our commitment to raising up disciples of Christ who understand the complete and authentic gospel message. The Great Commission commands us to go; to involve ourselves in prayer, give of our resources, and abandon our whole selves to Christ's mandate." — TRACI RHOADES
writer at Traces of Faith and author of Not All Who Wander (Spiritually) Are Lost
"Sometimes bizarre things can happen to Christians over time. We can lose our awe of the gospel. Somehow, we get numb to the jaw-dropping, life-changing beauty of the best news of all time. Gospel Privilege is the perfect antidote for this condition. David Joannes shines a bright light on the diamond of the gospel so we can be dazzled again. By introducing us to people whose lives have been changed by Christ and fleshing out the individual and cosmic dimensions of the good news, Joannes reminds us that the gospel is truly a privilege, both to receive and to share." — DREW DYCK, acquisitions editor at Moody Publishers and author of Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science

- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021If you know Christ and his salvation, then you've been given amazing grace — the greatest gift that's ever been given. But with that gift comes a commissioning to give it to others. To become a dispenser of God's grace. To share with others the incredible privilege you've already received — the acquiring of forgiveness, salvation, and the adoption into God's family as his beloved son or daughter. The message of this wonderful book is: don't hoard that! Pass on the privilege you've been given!
This book is biblical, it's encouraging, and it's practical. Read it for inspiration as well as ideas for how you can take the blessings you've received, and pass them on to many other would-be sons and daughters of God. This will add purpose and adventure to your life — and the people you reach will thank you for all of eternity!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021In a world where words are regularly being hi-jacked and hoarded, the vast majority could tend to view “privilege” as off-limits. Certainly attaching “Gospel” to it would be even more taboo. This book rediscovers and more fully develops an ancient-ish term that is perhaps even more relevant today. Joannes both nuances the argument, grasping it from the clutches of conversations that have claimed dibs on such terms, and expound on its positive aspects. Not only will Christians be struck with the delight they have in knowing and being known by God when they pick up this book, but they will also be compelled to take up their duty and share Christ with everyone, especially with those who have not had the opportunity. Of course, access to the Gospel has not been freely and/or fairly shared. It is time to fix that injustice. Gospel Privilege challenges believers with that call and gives them some direction as to the tools they will need for this most important and sacred task. It is a privilege to read and review this book and I hope that in a relatively short time similar books will not need to be written. The Gospel truly is the unearned advantage meant for everyone, let’s get it to them!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023This was the first of 3 books that I read, other than the Word of God, that really began to stir something in me. I was introduced to this book by brother in Christ, who spoke very highly of it. I began a copy of it that he gave me, but it was taking a while because I am not an avid reader. Another brother told me I should try audible and so I did and the first book I got was this one. It was this reading that God used to begin to burden my heart for the unreached. It really open my eyes to things that us in America are so detached from, and never hear about that we never really think about it. After I read this book, I read a book that I believe was recommended by David, which was , Is the Commission Still Great. And after that, I read one of David’s other books, which was Mind of the Missionary, and that book today has been the most impactful book apart from the Bible that I’ve ever read. But that started with this one. Now me and my wife have told the Lord “here we are send us. “And we are praying for the Lord to open the doors for us to become missionaries to the unreached people groups of the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021This is a timely and inspiring book serving as a compelling reminder for every Christian to share freely the good news we have to people who have no access and are waiting to hear. We will truly see revival among the nations if we take seriously this great privilege we have been given as children of God walking out his Great Commission to the world. I enjoyed everything about this book from the personal stories to the well-researched facts and stats presented as well as David's vivid writing style. This book definitely stirred passion again in my heart to see everyone reached with the good news of Jesus!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2021Gospel Privilege is an awakening for the American church, and is truly a is a must read for every believer. We all KNOW the gospel, but at some point we must GO and PROCLAIM the Gospel to the Unreached! Joannes shares his passion and heart for the lost and by the end, you will be telling everyone you know about the Living God! It is our privilege to know Him and to make Him known!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2022I appreciate David's heart for Jesus and to make him known. The challenge of realizing our responsibility to share the Gospel is at the heart of this book. Excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021There’s a lot in this book. The author weaves together scripture, history, data, quotes from other books, and stories (primarily but not exclusively from people serving with his ministry in East Asia). The author also tackles moralistic therapeutic deism, consumerist and individualistic approaches to Christianity, Christian nationalism, and today’s debates about social justice.
I found chapter two particularly strong; it explains the issue of gospel access and illustrates it with the story of a woman in China whose life was transformed by the gospel. That might be just what you need as you work on a talk, lesson, or sermon on that topic. Chapter five unpacks a biblical understanding of social justice, leaning on recent work from Tim Keller, and brings it to life with a compelling story from the life of an indigenous missionary in East Asia.
Note that the book seems to assume an American readership and directly challenges American Christianity.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023I’ve had a number of conversations with David centered around gospel deprivation. His insight is deep, his passion is genuine, and this book knocks this subject matter out of the park. Whether you’re involved in global missions or not, I highly recommend reading this book. Even as one who is heavily involved like David, I was deeply challenged by his book.
