Summer 1942. Defeatism hangs in the air. Britain stands alone. Winston Churchill is determined to strike back and has ordered the formation of a special operations force, dubbed “Commandos,” with the mission to “set Europe ablaze.” U.S. Marine Captain Jim Cain and his Gunnery Sergeant Leland Montgomery are surprised to receive orders to the British Commando training center in the Scottish Highlands. There they are put through the brutal specialized training that will hone their fighting skills. Pitiless forced marches, dangerous live fire exercises and hazardous assault courses building their physical endurance, and a strong sense of brotherhood develops between the British soldiers and the two Marines. Lucky to be quartered in the spacious home of the Commandos' commanding officer, Cain has the pleasure of meeting his daughter, Loreena. Bright and stunning, Loreena is secretive about her work in London. Before Cain can learn more about her, the training course is interrupted and the commando squad is sent on a special mission to destroy a German radar station on Nazi-held Alderney, off the coast of France. While the site is defended by a squad of second-rate garrison soldiers who are no match for the highly trained and motivated commandos, a reaction force of infantry, led by a German combat veteran, joins the fight. The action is fierce and bloody and there are heavy losses on both sides. The surviving raiders withdraw to Royal Navy motor torpedo boats, but a marauding squadron of Schnellboots (E-Boats) lies in wait.

An action packed, well written story that kept me spellbound. I enjoyed the swashbuckling tale of Marine Raiders, Captain Jim Cain and Gunnery Sergeant Leland Montgomery, as they trained with and later led British Commandos on a successful raid against the Nazis in WW ll. Author Richard Camp captures the feelings and fears of warriors in combat. You can tell he has experienced close combat as a Marine infantry leader. The touch of romance between Cain and the beautiful daughter of a British Brigadier adds to the plot. It's an inspiring story of three premiere organizations: the American Marine Raiders and the British Commandos as they succeed against impossible odds, with strong support by Royal Navy Torpedo Boats. This book is a real page turner.

About the Author

Colonel Dick Camp, a Purple Heart recipient, served 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring in 1988. Upon retirement he served as the Deputy Director, U.S. Marine Corps History Division and as the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Vice President for Museum Operations at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico, Virginia. Currently residing in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he is the author of many books and over 100 magazine articles on various military related subjects.

    Dick Camp served as a Marine officer for 26 years before retiring in 1988. He was a company commander (L 3/26)1967-68 in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Division along the DMZ and Khe Sanh. After retiring, Dick spent 16 years in Cincinnati, where he was employed as a school district business manager. Upon retirement, he became the Deputy Director of the Marine Corps' History Division and then Marine Corps Heritage Foundation's VP for Museum Operations at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. He has published more than 150 military oriented articles for various magazines, including Leatherneck, Marine Corps Gazette, Vietnam Magazine, World War II and Naval Institute Press.     Set against the backdrop of lesser-known warfare between British and German torpedo boats for dominance in the English Channel during World War II, author Richard Camp uses his considerable expertise from having led a U.S. Marine rifle company in combat during the Vietnam War, and later as a prolific, award-winning military historian, to treat the reader to a lively story with exceptional authenticity, dark humor and fascinating insights.

    Commandos: Set Europe Ablaze will draw you in quickly and keep you there as the pace quickens toward the thrilling conclusion. I have not enjoyed a novel as much in a longtime and hope the author has a sequel in the works.

    As a fictional WW 2 war story the title did not fit the storyline. It should have had training in its title. There was very little fighting and 90% training in the book. It was interesting and it held my attention waiting for combat but alas it didn't come but for a little section. It was a good segway into a sequel which I hope the author complets in order to see what happens to the main characters.

    "Commandos" is an exhilarating and gripping tale that follows the journey of two U.S. marines, Captain Jim Cain and Gunnery Sergeant Leland Montgomery. After being assigned to an English commando unit, they journey to the Scottish Highlands to receive their Special Operations commando training. There they learn close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, “street fighting.” It either kill or be killed. After their training, they embark on a raid of a German radar site in the English Channel.
    The story unfolds with painstaking detail, vividly depicting each intense battle. The author unflinchingly portrays the stark reality of war by the Germans inflicting substantial losses upon the commando team—conveying a sense of authenticity.
    The Commandos is a compelling invitation for readers to immerse themselves in the throes of wartime combat, vividly capturing the essence of a firefight. Without hesitation, I wholeheartedly endorse this book to anyone seeking an immersive experience of tumultuous wartime struggles. The book merits a resounding five-star rating.

    Commandos tells the story of two U.S. Marines (Captain Jim Cain and his Gunnery Sergeant Leland Montgomery) who are sent to fight alongside Britain's elite commando forces during World War II.

    The story begins with a bang - literally - as the protagonist and his sidekick experience an air raid upon arriving in London on their way to the British Commando Basic Training Centre in the Scottish Highlands.

    From there, the action and danger only escalates as Cain and Montgomery endure the grueling commandos training, and are ultimately sent on a daring secret mission (with the Captain leading the commandos) to a small Nazi-held island off the coast of France.

    There's also a dash of romance, as Cain connects with the commanding officer's daughter Loreena (who has her own wartime assignments to carry out).

    Written by a decorated Marine Corps combat veteran, Commandos drops the reader into an authentic military world of war and brotherhood.

    Author Colonel Richard Camp (U.S.M.C. ret.) has penned numerous nonfiction military histories and biographies (including the exceptional The Devil Dogs at Belleau Wood and his more recent Shadow Warriors: The Untold Stories of American Special Operations During WWII), but Commandos is his first foray into fiction.

    He does a worthy job; creating heroic and endearing characters, while setting up stakes that keep you turning the page.

    Camp's vivid description brilliantly brings the prose to life, successfully transporting the reader to 1942. You can almost hear Vera Lynn singing "We'll Meet Again".

    The author's laser-sharp pacing makes the action-packed story move quickly, and with its chapters constructed in short snippets, I can easily envision the book on the screen, as a movie or limited series.

    Final Verdict: An excellent military/action genre read with nostalgic undertones.

    I look forward to the next installment in the Marines' and commandos' adventures.
