Pride of Justice: Love and family forged from two different worlds (Men of the Squadron Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 143 ratings

Miss Rachel Berry, the adopted daughter of Freetown missionaries, wants to re-connect with her African mother’s family. She does not trust the Royal Navy, or Captain Halloren of the African Squadron. Her lying English father was a former naval seaman who jumped ship to join the lucrative African slave trade.

Capt. Christopher Halloren, 3rd son of a baron, transports a group of slaves he rescued to the missionary school in Freetown before attending the prize court to see if the judge will rule in favor of him and his crew so they can get on with the work of patrolling for slavers. The last thing he needs is to get involved with a beautiful mission teacher who seems hell-bent on putting herself in harm’s way with the illegal slave traders swarming at the fringes of Freetown.

Can they escape the destiny Society assigns them, or will they create their own?

Andrea K. Stein, the daughter of a trucker and an artist, never knew it would take the hard-work ethic of her father to achieve the light-filled magic of her mother’s art. She grew up a scribbler. The stories just spilled out. A newspaper and publishing professional for thirty years, she ran away to sea for three years, delivering yachts to the Caribbean, earning a USCG offshore captain’s license. Now, she writes about love and adventure on the high seas from her writing room in Colorado.

It was a good story, about a cruel part of history. I do not care to read about slavery, but this book, while indirectly about the subject, did touch the awful treatment of people in that part of history.

There is so much history, culture, anthropology, sociology, and of course, romance in this powerful tale. Christopher and Rachel are unlikely lovers by any standard but their love, while more subtle than some, is deep and abiding.

An enlightening though sad story detailing what went on with the d.ave trade for so many years. Not only the white but also the African chiefs and people were involved in this heartless and greedy venture that harmed so many people for so very many years . All this is revealed throughout this story. At the end we do enjoy a hea despite the tragic fact’s revealed

Captain Christopher Halloren has worked his way through the ranks despite the loss of his right arm in the war against the French. Rescued from slavers when her mother died, Rachel Berry is the adopted daughter of the vicar in Freetown. This story starts as sort of a day-in-the-life of Christopher, the Squadron, Rachel, the mission school, choose any one of them. It takes a look at Freetown, the plight of rescued slaves, the work of the Squadron, the mission school run by Vicar Berry and Rachel. Chris and Rachel meet amidst the chaos of a chicken escape. They soon develop feelings for each other. Rachel hesitates to commit because she wants to find her mother’s people. This is an engaging, sometimes emotional, sometimes exciting story. There is betrayal, and when Rachel is in danger and Chris rushes to rescue her. There is also some fun and romance. The characters are fantastic. Chris and Rachel make a splendid couple. The other members of the Squadron, the students at the mission school, and Vicar Berry make the story interesting and entertaining. A great story and a great ending. A winner.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Pride Of Justice is a phenomenal historical romance by Andrea K. Stein. Ms. Stein has provided readers with a well-written book. The characters in this story are outstanding and my favorite part of the book. Rachel's father sold her and her mother into slavery, where her mother died. After she was rescued she was adopted by missionaries and now helps train the slaves freed from the slavers. Christopher is a one-armed captain of the Royal Navy, capturing as many slave ships as he can. Christopher and Rachel's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to reading more from Andrea K. Stein in the future. Pride Of Justice is book 4 of the Men of the Squadron but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Story was Wonderful.
I didn't know that the African tribes helped sell their own people for a little bit of money.
It breaks my heart to read about this.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
