By Mary Hagen
Out for her early morning run, Beth Hansen discovers the dead body of citizen Roger Moore. With a bullet hole between his eyes, she knows he is in fact dead. She calls her husband’s office since he is the county sheriff, but time is wasted convincing his secretary to interrupt him because there has not been a murder in the town of Stopover in decades.
Beth and Hal Hansen had been deputies, but when Hal became sheriff the county’s law against nepotism resulted in Beth losing her job. Bored and frustrated, Beth began working part time for Jean Rand, the owner and editor of the Stopover Weekly Newspaper. In addition, Beth started her own business, The Stopover Independent Detective Agency.
Naturally, she begins her own investigation along with Jean and writes articles for the newspaper to keep the citizens of Stopover informed. When other murders occur in other towns, people worry there is a serial killer. While the victims are shot with a pistol of a similar caliber pistol as Roger Moore, they are missing organs. Because two men showed up soon after Beth found him, the thought was perhaps they had scared off the killer before the organs could be “harvested.”
Hal is not happy his wife and Jean could very well be putting themselves in danger, but the two women do find some helpful evidence.
Hagen has her police procedure correct and her characters come to life immediately. The Wyoming small town rural setting is a welcome switch from many of the big city crime scenes. And you have to love Chip, the bedraggled homeless dog that follows Beth everywhere. Not finding his owners, she takes the animal to the vet who can’t check the dog out because it’s so dirty. After a thorough grooming and the discovery of no ID chip, Beth takes the full-sized poodle home. Chip not only provides some humor but is also protective.
Of course, Hal, Beth, Jean, and others capture the murderer.
I’m looking forward to reading more of Hagen’s books.
