The Leadership Core: Competencies for Successfully Leading Others Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

“An encyclopedia of leadership research and philosophy…Each chapter is chock full of big learnings. Savor, absorb and apply.”—David Cottrell, author of Monday Morning Leadership

Whether in the boardroom, on the battlefield, or in sports competition, the difference between success and failure often begins and ends with the quality of those who lead. Effective leaders can produce outstanding team performance, inspire others to overcome adversity and challenge, and help unlock potential and fulfillment for their people. Poor leaders can cripple progress, decrease productivity and results, and drive people toward the door.

Leadership is often viewed as a ‘black box’—an unexplainable phenomenon that sits between the input of effort and the output of desired results. What does ‘good’ leadership look like, and how do we develop the ability to successfully lead? Intended for both current and aspiring leaders,
The Leadership Core explores several primary competencies, as well as the concept of character, that help leaders become more effective and inspiring. Interspersed with pauses for reflection on one’s own leadership today, The Leadership Core can be a valuable tool for both leaders at all levels.

This is one of those books that you may dismiss because you think it is 'just another leadership book". Well let me reassure you it is not! The Leadership Core written by Will Schirmer is a complete leadership tool kit. Yes it addresses the major issues, but then it addresses issues you may not be thinking about like "hiring" people, interviewing them, onboarding them and taking responsibility for them. How about the leaders role in helping their people find their "purpose'. The book is full of surprises and Will Schirmer has done the research. The book is a great read and you will have plenty to apply as you are reading it!

William’s twenty plus years of experience in leadership training and education truly shines forth in this book. The Leadership Core is as insightful as it is thorough, taking the reader on a journey of self-discovery. In his book, William makes an analogy to attempting to construct an item without any directions. This book is the ultimate set of directions for those looking to become a successful leader!

This book was a great and easy read! The more I got into it, the more I read that pertained to me, as I related it to my current job. I realized even more how leaders at my current workplace could use a refresher course on leadership skills and putting employees first...take the time to get to know us...and not "by osmosis, they'll get insight into their team members". Coaching was a vitale and important part of a previous job, I had. It is not present much in my current work place. As William states..."we are the coach, after all. This means we must look for opportunities to provide our people guidance. This doesn't happen without regular interaction with team members." How true! The chapters are short and a few questions at the end of each chapter gives one time to ponder and reflect. Company leaders...this is a must read to keep your leadership skills sharp and in check!
