She's made big promises. It'll take everything she's got to keep them.

Crisscrossing the Great Lakes onboard her father's freighter ship, the
Mary Elise, Elise Wright has grown up cooking and caring for the crew. It is a life she loves. Unlike her estranged sister, Elise has turned down numerous opportunities for a "respectable life" with their wealthy relatives. And now, because of promises she made to her dying mother, she's bound to the ship and her deeply grieving father more than ever.

Nick Clark is grateful to be hired on as the
Mary Elise's first mate as he works to overcome his own guilt and others' censure for a fatal decision he made captaining another ship. He feels protective of the Wrights and their generous natures, especially when a rough new sailor seems intent on causing serious trouble.

As the sailor's misdeeds grow, tragedy swells up from another corner. Left to pick up the pieces of the commitments they've made to themselves and to each other, Nick and Elise will have to rely on their faith to see them through.

"In the pleasing third installment of the Ladies of the Lake series, a couple more at home on a ship than on land must navigate their romance. . . . Peterson enlists a few unsavory characters, the uncertainty of the seas, and the underlying class separation between those who work on ships and those who serve them to add depth to this sweet romantic tale. Peterson's fans will love this."

The Mary Elise is a ship that travels the lake, taking merchandise from one port to the next. Her captain is a man by the name of William Wright. Along with his wife of many years, they raise two girls with the oldest named Elise and the other Caroline. After losing his wife, Captain Wright continued to sail the lakes with Elise working in the galley and any other chores her father tasked her to do. Caroline wanted a different life as her dreams were marriage and a home.
The first mate is man with a broken heart and past, named Nicodemus Clark. Nick, as he is called by all, works hard on the Mary Elise, focusing on doing penance for a past error in judgment. As time goes by, a romance may be blossoming on the ship between Nick and Elise if they can weather the storms on the horizon.
I read the other two novels in the series starting with Destined for You followed by Forever My Own. Each is a self-contained story that allows readers to read them in any order. I enjoy reading a good story that is filled with hope and has a realistic flavor too. The novel shows how faith can make a difference in life and how some reach out to God. I savored reading the book as I think it is the last of this series, so I already am looking ahead to whatever may come next from the pen of this author. Grab one of these books or any of the others; they are solid stories to enjoy and share!

This Story as the others in re series of "Ladies of the Lake" is thrilling and capture my heart and attention! I know death is apart of what we all must do; that is pass away! But, sometimes I would love the characters to live, why was the wife dead and then Captain so broken hearted? Elise and Caroline were both young women! Though captain Wright had sailed for sometime, he and his wife were probably only in their forties! Aunt Martha and Uncle James Monroe were as well! The developing family, uncle James was brother of The girls deceased mother and was in partner with Captain Wright.
I truly enjoyed Elise, Captain Wright, Caroline( fighting back when she was abused by her husband), though recently wed was an adulterous, and beat her; she return to her family and got the marriage anul! For Elise remained faithful to her grieving father cooking for the " Mary Elise" and his crew on the ship, life on the Lake was where she was born and and fell in love with Nicademus "Nick" Clark!
The ending both surprised and sadden me! Great reading, just to sorrowful! Thanks Ms. Tracie, when I started reading ( 1999) again during my illness, you were my first author, to date can't stop reading your stories! So, everyone grab this series and enjoy!

Loved Elise and Nick story. It was exciting from start to finish. Nick and Elise love came the first time they met. He became her hero the one she could turn too. Caroline Elise sister was very selfish but things changed for her in the end. Nick was able reconcile with his past with the help of Elise and God. Bill Elise and Caroline father was a man full of wisdom. Uncle James and Aunt Martha let their wealth get the better of them. They tried to pull Elise and Caroline in. But Elise wanted no part she loved the water and outdoors. Thats what endured her to Nick they both loved it. They were met for each other. Hope to have Caroline on going story soon.

I always like this writer's books! In this book our main characters are sailing folk, carrying freight across the Great Lakes, and bringing new freight back. Love, loss, forgiveness, and trust in God Carey's this story.
I really liked learning about how Great Lakes shipping was done before, in early years.

I highly recommend all three of these books! They take you to times of struggle, finding love, and dealing with loss. Hated to even put them down and was wishing they continued even at the ends!
