I've read all of Pier's Anthony's Xanth Novels and this is the most recent one as of OctOgre 2022.
I enjoyed the plot, there were more twists in this one than a typical Xanth novel, and some of the ones I was expecting were subverted. Overall it is a good story, but I wouldn't recommend starting your journey into Xanth here. There are far too many characters, situations, and just plain story elements that you would miss the significance of if you started here.
Start back at the beginning, and by the time you get here you'll find it very enjoyable.

This is the 40th something book in this series and I have enjoyed collecting and reading every single one of them in hard back. This one will not disappoint. Currently, I'm about half way through and it is still interesting, that is to say the story is still flowing well. Somewhere in the middle of this series of books the story pattern was the exact same for 3 or 4 books in a row. But, since then he (Piers Anthony) has varied the pattern enough to maintain a sense of sameness and differentness at the same time. I'm the type reader that I read a word at a time and cannot speed read, so when I come upon a missing word or a completely wrong word (an instead of and) that's not purposely done by the author I tend to stumble and have to back up and re-read. The last few novels in this chain have had 5 or 6 such problems for me in each. So far, this one has only had one. If you like puns, and I do, then you will like this book and the whole series. I only gave it a four star rating because I'm not done reading it yet and for using main characters that are mostly all children wanting to know about intimate things which seems to have been a running theme in the last few books.

As an avid reader of all things Xanth, I was anxious to read this tome. While it kept to the cannon of Xanth, I was a bit disappointed that there was less occurrence of the be usual beguiling puns we expect and the story was darker than many of its predecessors. It also appears that Mr. Anthony has tried to elevate the reading to a more adult and more educated audience. As a multi-college degreed engineer, I applaud it pushing literacy in a world where our government is trying to drive education to the lowest common denominator.
